In-depth readingStep five. Critical thinkingActivity 1. Discussion. What other suggestions can you give on how to become an effective communicator Reference:① Making eye contact② Showing respect③ Responding timely④ Listening carefullyActivity 2. Cross-cultural communicationRead the short story and answer the questions.A Japanese man asked an American traveller if the airport offers a luggage trolley service(行李车服务). The American wanted to tell him that not only did the airport provide the service, but that is free of charge(免费的). So he replied with the well-known gesture (手势) that means “OK”. To the Japanese man, however, this gesture means “money”. The Japanese man therefore concluded that the luggage service was expensive. At that moment, a Tunisian (突尼斯人)saw the scene and thought that the American was hinting (暗示)to the Japanese man that he is a thief and the Japanese should be careful or he would be killed.Step five. Critical thinking① Why the misunderstanding happened Because they (the Japanese, the American and the Tunisian) come from three different countries, embrace different cultural backgrounds and have different understandings of the gesture “OK”.(This is the reason why the author tells us in Para. 3 that you need to know with whom you are communicating.)② How can we apply the ideas mentioned in the lecture transcript to cross-cultural (跨文化的)communication With whom:Body language:Empathy:ReferenceIt is important to learn about another person’s cultural background when communicating. You should find out about any communication norms related to age, job and so on, because they may differ from culture to culture. For example, certain cultures often have varying ways of addressing (称呼) older people.Body language reveals a lot about you: your culture, thoughts and attitudes. For example, if you use steady eye contact during communication to show that you are attentive, sometimes the other person may consider it as disrespectful(失礼的;不尊敬的) and will feel uncomfortable. For this reason, cues that may cause confusion(困惑) should be avoided and imitating the other’s body language could prevent any offence(冒犯).The value of empathy should not be understated too. It can bridge the gap because even though we may be different, humans generally express the same emotions. So, if we are interacting with a foreigner, we will still easily notice if they are, for example, happy or sad. We can then adjust our own body language to show them how we feel about their emotions. We could smile to share their happiness or gently wrinkle our brows to show concern.IntroductionDefinitionWays to sharpen communication skillsSignificance of effective communicationStep 6.
