The best apps for food waste
Too Good To Go
This fast-expanding platform was launched in 2016, and handled food waste by making surplus (剩余的), unsold food from supermarkets, cafes and restaurants available to consumers at heavily discounted prices. There is an element of surprise as the food comes in a lucky “magic bag”, each costing a third of the sale price.
Olio
Founded in 2015, Olio claims to be the world’s biggest food-sharing network. It connects neighbors with each other so that surplus food is given, not thrown away. Olio users just take a picture of their items and add them to the listings. Neighbors receive customized messages and can request anything they fancy, with pick-up arranged through private messaging.
Kitche
Kitche handled food waste in the home by helping users to keep track of what they have bought and plan meals accordingly. Users scan receipts or upload online receipts stored on their phones. The app will then tap into its recipe bank to plan meals based on the food you have, reminding you of items nearing use-by dates.
NoWaste
NoWaste allows users to keep track of the food in their fridge and freezer, also by scanning shopping receipts. You can set the use-by dates for all your food, receive messages when they are close to the last date, and record shopping lists and meal plans.
1. Which app enables users to buy food at really low prices
A. Olio. B. Kitche. C. NoWaste. D. Too Good To Go.
2. What can users do through Olio
A Buy unsold food from supermarkets. B. Share surplus food with neighbors.
C. Find a “magic bag” of food from cafes. D. Plan meals using available food items.
3. What do Kitche and NoWaste have in common
A. Both can offer users online receipts after their shopping.
B. Both can advise users what to buy based on a recipe bank.
C. Both can remind users of foods’ use-by dates.
D. Both can tell users what food they waste the most.

Sanyé Mylo’s eyes twinkle with excitement when he stands in the sound booth of The Record Co. in Boston, eager to bring his creation to life. With the press of a button, his latest rap track fills the room. “I didn’t know spaces like this existed,” says Mylo, who grew up in the low-income neighborhood of Dorchester. He is one of the youngest musicians who, thanks to The Record Co. , has turned his music into a full-time occupation.
Founded in 2010 by Matt McArthur, The Record Co. aims to give musicians more affordable access to the creative workspace and introduce the world of music to those who may have never considered their place in it.
McArthur understands this challenge firsthand. As a music technology student at Berklee College of Music, he was frustrated by the high costs of renting time in production studios. On average, a recording studio in Boston costs more than $100 per hour to rent.
He saw a recording studio not as a private office for a man of means but as a community center available to all. So he took out loans, collected donations and opened a studio in a tiny basement in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Slowly but steadily, McArthur expanded it and eventually rented a new property to include spaces for practice and production.
Today, The Record Co., with a full-time staff of more than 20 people, is a state-of-the art, 12,000-foot facility that can be rented for as little as $10 per hour. Each month, it receives about 1,000 reservations, and around 3,500 musicians pass through its doors. At The Record Co., the principle is clear: Music should be affordable for everyone, and so should the space for creating it. The building has been shaped not only with an ear to acoustics(音响效果)but also with an eye to ensure it is as welcoming to a musician in a wheelchair as to one who walks in with a guitar over the shoulder.
4 Why did McArthur found The Record Co.
A. To make musicians well-known. B. To make a fortune through music.
C. To persuade people to pursue music. D. To make music production affordable.
5. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3
A. Provide some advice for musicians. B. Add some background information.
C. Summarize the previous paragraphs. D. Launch an appeal for musical creation.
6. What does the underlined word “means” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Wealth. B. Method. C. Vision. D. Determination
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Bring Boston’s music to the world B. Turn music into a full-time occupation
C. A recording studio has advanced facilities D. Music belongs to everyone at The Record Co.

Every year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, and people all around the world celebrate this day by taking part in environmental awareness activities and working towards raising awareness about important issues that our planet Earth is currently facing, like global warming and pollution.
Before the 1970s there were almost no environmental laws and industries were allowed to dump their industrial waste and fumes anywhere in the world. A US Senator by the name of Gaylord Nelson was concerned about the growing levels of pollution. So in the spring of 1970, Senator Nelson created Earth Day as a way to promote awareness about these issues in the US. His plan was successful, as 20 million Americans started a demonstration (示威游行) for Earth Day around the world. As a result, the US government started an agency called the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Over the next few years, the movement spread across the world and Earth Day became internationally recognized.
The theme of Earth Day 2021 is “restore our Earth”. The focus of this year’s theme is restoring Earth’s natural processes and ecosystems. Apart from that, the goal of this year’s Earth Day is to focus on taking green technologies and innovative (创新的) actions to restore the Earth’s natural ecosystem. More than stopping pollution and global warming, this year’s Earth Day focuses on reversing the damage caused to the Earth.
Despite strict environmental laws in many countries across the world, problems such as global warming, air pollution and climate change continue to threaten our planet. Many scientists around the world are warning us about the already irreversible problems that have been created by microplastics, oil spills and depletion (消耗) of the ozone layer. If the human race continues on the same path as before, the extinction of the human race is not too far off in the future. Earth Day seeks to help raise people’s awareness around the world about these issues and bring positive changes, so future generations stand a chance of living a safer life.
8. Which activity is suitable to celebrate Earth Day
A. Plastic waste collection. B. A long-distance bicycle race.
C. A lecture about human rights. D. Medical research on cancers.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The history of Earth Day. B. The success of Gaylord Nelson.
C. Environmental changes in the 1970s. D. The establishment of environmental laws.
10. What is special about Earth Day of 2021
A. It helps to slow down global warming.
B. It aims to bring the Earth back to normal.
C. It focuses on reducing individuals’ carbon footprint.
D. It promotes the development of emerging industries.
11. What is the purpose of the text
A. To predict the future of the Earth.
B. To describe our terrible living environment.
C. To state the progress in protecting the Earth.
D. To increase people’s awareness of Earth Day.

Manta rays (魔鬼鱼) are some of the creatures in the ocean who allow divers to swim right up to and interact (与……互动) with them. Unfortunately, these gentle animals are in big trouble. Since 2011, manta rays have been listed as a threatened species worldwide.
Peru, a country in South America, recently took a big step to protect giant manta rays: It banned fishing for them. Although 12 other countries have passed laws to protect rays, Peru’s may be the most important one yet. That’s because there are more manta rays in the Pacific Ocean near Peru than in any other place in the world.
Giant manta rays are unusual-looking creatures. The giant, flat rays are typically about 4. 5 meters wide and can grow up to 8 meters wide! “They’re sort of like giant flying carpets underwater, ” says Joshua Stewart of the Manta Trust, an organization that researches manta rays.
People catch rays for their meat. Overfishing is bad for any sea creature, but it’s even worse for manta rays. Female manta rays usually have only one baby, every two to five years. So every ray that’s caught hurts the population in a big way. People who break Peru’s new law can be fined or have their fishing licenses taken away. Even rays caught accidentally in fishing nets must be set free.
Earlier this year, the Manta Trust attached video cameras, called Crittercams, to manta rays off the west coast of Mexico. The footage (连续镜头) the cameras collect could help researchers predict where rays swim and when. The scientists could use the information to warn fishing boats to avoid these areas, helping reduce the number of accidentally caught rays.
Stewart says it’s important to protect these unique creatures. “There’s really no other animal that compares in size that you can have interactions with in the wild.”
12. What’s a characteristic of manta rays
A. They are very friendly to people. B. They are usually of small size.
C. They can fly like a bird. D. They like swimming up and down.
13. What’s the current situation of manta rays
A. Their habitats are badly damaged. B. They only live in the Pacific Ocean.
C. Fewer and fewer female rays give birth. D. Their number has dropped greatly.
14. What’s the Manta Trust also trying to do besides doing research on manta rays
A. Look for more rays. B. Protect them.
C. Make films about them. D. Reduce their population.
15. How does Stewart feel about Peru’s new law
A. It makes no sense. B. It is hard to follow.
C. It is really essential. D. It needs improvement.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mia and Max, who were raised alone by their mother Jennifer, were angels (天使), or so their neighbors called them.
Since Jennifer couldn’t afford a nanny (保姆), her neighbors always gladly stepped in to care for the brother and sister in her absence.
Mia and Max were absolute sweethearts. They would help the neighbors in the garden, walk their dogs, and carry groceries from their cars to their homes.
“Mom says we should always help others in need!” Mia would say, and Max would agree with her with a broad smile. “Because a little help goes a long way!” he would add.
The two lovely children warmed the entire neighborhood with their sweet smiles and kind hearts. Everything was all right until one day Max fell down on the playground and was rushed to hospital. Sadly, it turned out he was very sick and needed some specific medicines to keep him going. “That’s going to cost a lot of money!” Jennifer sighed. But she didn’t tell anyone that she was in trouble.
She began setting aside money each month for Max’s treatment. Obviously, with her poor pay as a waitress in a bar, she couldn’t save enough. She began cutting down on money for gas and even food. She would walk miles every day to and from work and go to the grocery stores as less often as possible.
One night, Jennifer came home and opened the fridge, only to find they had just one can of tomato soup left. “I’m a total failure as a mother,” she cried, blaming (责备) herself. “I can’t even feed my children!”
Finally, Jennifer added extra water to the soup and served it to her children, who enjoyed their dinner as happily as usual. As soon as her children left the table, Jennifer burst into tears again, little knowing a pleasant surprise was waving at her and her kids.
注意:
1.续写词数应为80左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When Jennifer checked her mailbox the next day, she found an envelope.

【答案】 Good morning, respectful judges and fellow students. I am honored to make a speech on wildlife protection.
We are living on this planet where species are dying out. With less bio-diversity, we will be faced with disasters sooner or later. Therefore, it’s vital that measures should be taken. First, laws must be made to protect all wildlife. Then, people should be educated and their awareness of wildlife protection should be raised. Last, we each can do something to make a difference.
If we all take measures, I believe we will have a better home.
That’s all. Thank you.
