Unit 1 Science Fiction
Reading and Thinking:Satisfaction Guaranteed (Adapted)
Good morning,dear judges.It's my great honor to be here to present my teaching design.
The content of my lesson is Senior English required elective course Book 4 Unitl Reading and thinking Satisfaction guaranteed.
To begin with,I will introduce my basic teaching elements from the following perspectives.
1.Analysis of the basic teaching elements
① Teaching material analysis
The article of this unit is an excerpt from the adapted version of the novel of the same name by the famous American science fiction writer Isaac Asimov,Satisfaction Guaranteed. It is an early classic work to explore the relationship between humans and robots.
From the point of view of the heroine Claire,the story of Tony,a household robot,is told during a trial in her home.Tony was made by Claire's husband Larry's company,and Claire had a slight resistance to it before he was sent to her home.Since Larry was on a business trip,she felt inconvenienced living with Tony alone under the same roof.But in the end she was persuaded by Larry to agree.When she met Tony,she was shocked by his handsome physical appearance.As the story goes,because of Tony's carefulness and caring,Claire goes from awkward rejection to habitual acceptance to relying on trust.Claire is sensitive,vulnerable,and self-conscious,feeling that she is not as beautiful as local socialite Gladys Claffern,nor is she a competent hostess to help her husband Larry move up the social ladder.As a result,Tony helps Claire change her makeup, improve her home,enhance her charm,increase the beauty of the house,and enhance her confidence.The bright line of discourse narration is Claire's emotional change from rejection and vigilance to acceptance and trust to being deeply attracted to Tony.
This text is excerpted from the first half of the novel,recounting Tony's arrival and the various considerate services and meticulous help he provides to Claire.Tony suggests that Claire invite her friends to a party at her new house the night before he leaves.At the end of the text, Tony puts his arm around Claire and tells her of his attachment to her when the doorbell rings.The text ends here.In the after-class exercises,the listening text serves as supplementary material and provides the story ending for the reading text.
The end of the story,because Claire fell in love with Tony,so Tony needs to be sent back to the company to reform.A robot can't make a human fall in love with it,otherwise it's hurting the human emotionally,and that's a sign offailure.
② Students analysis
The class is for students in grade two of high school.
In terms of language knowledge,students in grade two of high school have mastered a lot of vocabulary related to this topic,but for the learning of new words,students rely on the teacher or the notes after the book
In terms of reading strategies,students can proficiently use skimming,skipping and forecasting to obtain the main information of the text,but their ability to sort out,explain and interpret the text content needs to be further improved.

[Design intention]By talking about "artificial intelligence",directly enter the subject situation, activate students'cognitive schema,guide students to use the strategy of comparison and contrast,think about the similarities and differences between robots and humans,and pave the way for exploring the relationship between humans and robots.

Possible answers
Similarities:
Tony was tall and handsome with smooth hair and a deep voice just like an attractive man.
Tony offered help,suggestions,sympathy and comfort,and treated Claire with dignity just like a human,or rather,a gentleman.
Differences:
A human being's facial expression changes often,whereas Tony's never changed.
Different from a human,Tony had no idea of avoiding body contact between men and women when he offered to help dressing.

Tony managed to catch Claire in time when she fell of the ladder in the next room, but a human being can't make it.

Step 5:Assignment:
Write an ending about what might happen to Tony and Claire later. [Design intention]
Predict the subsequent development of the story,exercise students'logical thinking ability and consolidate the writing schema of narrative text.
