Answer questions: “What is his/her habit ” [Design purpose]: Lead in by a video related to the topic of the text, activate students’ prior knowledge. [Core competence covered]: Develop speaking ability. [学习效果评价]: 学生能够回忆本单元所学重点短语和句型,观看视频之后能够回答教师所提问题。 Step 2 Learning and understanding 1.Read for structure (1) Students skim the article and divide it into 3 parts. (2) Students sum up the main idea of each part. Part1 Introduction Part2 Good habits Part3 Bad habits 2.Read for details (1) Students read part1 and find out the information for the following questions. How old is Jane Where does Jane come from (2) Students read part 2&3. Match the frequency words with the activities. Fill in the blanks with the frequency words. Add a title for the passage. Add an ending for the passage. [Design purpose]: Help students have a good understanding of the structure and be familiar with the use of the frequency words and target language. [Core competence covered]: 1.Language ability:Retrieve and summarize information. 2.Thinking capacity:Use the four-square writing method form to analyze the text and polish it. [学习效果评价]: 1.学生能够划分文章结构并找出各部分的大意。 2.学生能够利用四方格进一步理解文章细节内容并且逐步解构文章。 3.学生能够为文章补充结尾,凝练标题。 Step 3 Applying and practice 1. Students use the four square form to write down their habits as an outline for writing. Write down activities first. Ask and answer with partner by using the sentence pattern —How often do you... —I always/usually/sometimes/hardly ever... Add the frequency words before the activities. Finish the introduction and ending part. 2.Students write a report about their habits with the help of the outline. Write down the report. Use the checklist to evaluate the report. [Design purpose]: Help students apply the four square writing method into practice and evaluate their work by the checklist. [Core competence covered]: 1.Language ability:Develop communication ability. 2.Learning ability: Learn cooperatively. Lead the students to deep thinking How do habits affect our life —Good habits can make us strong, healthy, knowledgeable... —Bad habits can make us near-sighted, over weighted, irresponsible. What should we do —Create good habits and change bad habits into good ones. 2. Introduce Charles Duhigg and his habit loop. Watch a video about how to create and change a habit. Review how to create a habit of rope skipping and how to change a habit of playing computer games into playing basketball. 3. Ask students to create a habit and change a bad habit. [Design purpose]: Help students understand the habit loop and how to use it to create and change a habit. [Core competence covered]: 1.Learning ability:Develop communication ability and learn cooperatively. 2.Cultural awareness: become aware that habits are powerful in our life; applying scientific method and holding belief can help us create or change a habit. Students summarize what they have learned in the class. [Design purpose]: Help students consolidate what they have learned in the class. [Core competence covered]: Improve summarizing ability. [Design purpose]: Help students of different levels feel a sense of achievement by design optional homework. [Core competence covered]: Language ability: improve writing ability.
