Ss learn about the project: give a presentation on one of the natural disasters you have experienced or heard about on the National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day. 创设贴近生活的真实项目情境。 学生能够明确项目成果。2. Ss work in groups of four to choose a natural disaster for the presentation and divide roles within the group. 引导学生以自主合作形式实施项目。 学生能够小组合作选题,细化分工。Plan the project 1. Ss identify what is needed in a presentation and the two features of a presentation according to the definition. A presentation is a speech in which an idea is explained and shown to an audience. (Both a speech and slides are needed.) A well-organized structure and informative contents are equally important aspects of a presentation. Ss infer the function of a news lead through an example in this unit: the lead summarizes basic information and catches reader’s attention. Example: The most powerful earthquake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday, killing more than 6,500 people in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and at least four other countries. Ss infer the function of restrictive relative clauses through another example in this unit: restrictive relative clauses add details to make a story more vivid. The 8.0-magnitude earthquake which killed over 80,000 people and left many more injured turned many towns and counties into ruins. (page 56)3. Ss summarize the first tip for the presentation.4. Ss find out the definition of the natural disaster and talk about it. Example: the definition of typhoons 引导学生组织报告内容。 学生能够谈论所选自然灾害的定义,用图片展示并解释其形成过程。2. Ss find out pictures to show the formation of the natural disaster and explain it. Example: the stages of typhoon formation Typhoons start off as tropical thunderstorms. The strong winds pull in water from the oceans. The thunderstorms change the water into heat, which causes more air to flow to the centre of the storm causing evaporation. All the heat and air flow toward the eye creating the typhoon.3. Ss identify the writing technique used to show the impact of natural disasters: using specific numbers. Ss gather relevant numbers about the impact of the natural disaster. Ss use charts or tables to present numbers visually.
