More than 30 years ago, Jadav Payeng started planting trees on a barren sandbar (贫瘠的沙洲) near his birthplace in India’s Assam region. That day, the then-16-year-old noticed many snakes washed up on the sandbar after a flood. They were dying due to heat exposure at a rapid rate. “How can I help them ” Then he had an idea: Trees can provide shade for them!
Jadav lives on an island, Majuli, which is in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. It begins at the base of the Himalayas, at the meeting of a fan of rivers that drain (流走) snowmelt. At one time, villages upstream had redirected the river, creating more forceful currents around the island and carrying away the soil, thus damaging the natural habitats of its wildlife. As a consequence, much of the island became barren sand, and an entire community was at risk of being displaced.
Jadav also noticed that nobody was doing anything about it besides watching their part of the world disappear. So, he started to put his idea into action — every day, one or two or three at a time. He took notes of how they grew, harvested their seeds, grew saplings (树苗) in his hut and planted before going off to work.
Now that once-barren sandbar is a 1,360-acre forest, home to many animals: deer, Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros and even a group of 100 elephants that visit every year. There are now native grasses that have taken root in the shade and varieties of native trees grown from seeds that have washed ashore. But most importantly, the island that is also home to a few hundred people is holding its own against the bad weather. Standing beside one of the first trees he planted 30 years ago, Jadav tells us: “It’s a little thing, something anyone can do.”
24.What was Jadav’s original aim to plant trees
A.To save the snakes from heat exposure. B.To protect the snakes from extinction.
C.To produce materials to stop flooding. D.To use the leaves to create more shades.
25.What primarily made Majuli a barren island
A.Villagers’ ignorance of ecology. B.Villagers’ redirecting the river.
C.The extreme weather conditions. D.Loss of wildlife’s natural habitats.
26.Which of the following can best describe Jadav
A.Frank and learned. B.Subjective yet reliable.
C.Determined and careful. D.Smart but hot-tempered.
27.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.What the forest means to the wildlife. B.How ecology benefits the human kind.
C.How Jadav feels about his simple deeds. D.What difference Jadav’s efforts have made.

Earlier this month, TikTok announced that it will be introducing screen time limits for the accounts of users aged under 18. Children under 13 will require a parent or guardian to type in a password to continue scrolling (滚屏) through their feed, and those aged 13-17 will be asked to set their own passwords when the viewing time goes beyond the limit.
Studies suggest that 30 minutes may be the sweet spot for social media use, where users are able to stay connected with friends and family and view entertainment. However, many other studies show that overly-heavy social media use can lead to a lot of problems, such as physical issues and depression.
By suggesting 100 minutes as a hard line where a password is required to be created by the user, TikTok is gradually making the standards clear as to what may be regarded as problematic social media habit in young people. Although these passwords for older teenagers can obviously be bypassed, they are a step in the right direction in encouraging children to use social media responsibly.
Also, parents who own their own TikTok accounts will be able to link with their children’s accounts, gaining additional, such as muting notifications (消息免打扰) and customizing time limits for different days in the week.
Algorithms (算法) that could tell parents if the child has been viewing dangerous material could soon be put into use. However, the difficulty in this is the amount of content available on the internet.
Ultimately, apps such as TikTok and Instagram will need to continue introducing more measures to improve online safety for children.
Lawmakers around the world are paying close attention to the effect social media has on the young, meaning that the development of new tools to improve its use will no doubt take place soon if big tech wishes to avoid additional legal issues.
28.Why did TikTok introduce screen time limits for teenagers
A.To protect their privacy.
B.To develop their self-control.
C.To improve family relationship.
D.To prevent overuse of social media.
29.What’s the author’s attitude towards TikTok’s new policy
A.Favourable. B.Objective. C.Concerned. D.Disapproving.
30.What can parents do to help children use social media responsibly
A.Type in a password to stop the use.
B.Send a link to the children’s account.
C.Set time limits through their own account.
D.Use algorithms to remove dangerous content.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning social media
A.Its effects on the young. B.Legal pressure on its improvement.
C.Its application to lawmaking. D.Solutions to its technological issues.

For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. But there’s no denying that it’s not as easy or as fast to get around on the beach as it is on a road or a sidewalk. But why is it so hard to walk on sand
The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you “sink in” at each step. This forces you to use 2.1 to 2. 7 times more energy with every step you take. Another idea is that people walk more difficultly on soft than they do on hard surfaces, a study found. The researchers compared how people walked on foam (沫) and hard surfaces by analyzing the forces under their feet and how much oxygen each person consumed. They found that walking on soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and snow, caused people to take longer steps — actions that use more energy than walking on a hard surface.
But as experienced beach walkers know, there’s a way to make it easier to walk on sand: Just add water, When sand is wet, it becomes more compact (紧密), and walking on it is more similar to walking on hard surface. In other words, it’s much easier to cross a beach by walking along the shoreline, where the waves roll in and out. This is a balance though; too much water could make the sand soft once again. If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be accomplished by wearing shoes.
Although it’s more difficult, there are some good reasons to exercise on sand. The impact forces are lower on sand than on hard surface. Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with an unforgiving surface such as concrete (混凝土). This means sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from workouts.
32.Why is the question raised in the first paragraph
A.To show problems. B.To call up readers’ memories.
C.To invite readers to answer it. D.To draw readers’ attention to the topic.
33.How can you walk on sand more easily
A.By putting on shoes. B.By taking longer steps.
C.By walking in the water. D.By using special breath methods.
34.Which of the following surfaces is unsuitable for athletes’ training
A.Sand. B.Concrete.
C.Foam. D.Snow.
35.What may be the best title for the text
A.Tips for Beach Vacation B.All Kinds of Sports on the Sand
C.Why Is It So Hard to Walk on Sand D.Where Are We With the Sand Research

I would feel ashamed every time I receive a new package (包裹) on my doorstep. I know that buying new stuff is bad for the planet. But every time I buy something, I get some happiness that’s hard to give up.
Recently a new book has given me new insights: 36 It’s the way our brains have evolved (进化). And there may be a way to break the cycle. We are evolved from simple organisms that survived because their networks of nerve cells learned to repeat rewarding (有益的) decisions. Today, we have billions of action cells in the brain. They are always forming connections to strengthen rewarding behavior. 37 We seek out those releases in dopamine, and at the same time repeat the actions that lead to them.
38 Maybe you weren’t even thinking about buying watercolor paints. Then something reminded that you like painting, and you searched online and found they were less expensive than you expected. When they arrived on your doorstep, they were better than you thought. Your brain will be drawn to repeat the behavior that got you something unexpected and good.
The best way to break the overbuying habits is not to stop buying things completely.
39 Imagine you’ve formed a habit of eating chocolate before bed for comfort, even though you know you don’t need the calories. You can try having milk with cocoa powder as a healthier replacement, which provides similar comfort. Once you start losing weight, the reward of being able to fit into your old clothes will feel as good as the chocolate once does. 40 Buying used items satisfies our desire to acquire. It gives us the same good feeling of an unexpected reward without consuming more resources.
A.We need that same replacement for shopping.
B.Whether that approach would work is up for debate.
C.Our brains especially like it, and release more dopamine.
D.My desire to keep buying things isn’t necessarily a personal fault.
E.In this process, dopamine is released, helping us learn how to obtain a reward.
F.The good feeling connected to unexpected rewards is partly why we like shopping.
G.A better solution may be to replace the old, long-term harmful rewards with new ones.

Now,a year later, as I continue to share my travel experiences with my friends, I no longer use pictures. 53 , I use my unique experiences to create an image in their minds that no 54 could ever match.

16-year-old Lisa hated looking at herself in the mirror. She was not comfortable in her own skin and feared people would label her “ugly” after seeing the burn scar on her face. It hurt her every time she had to recall that tragedy where her face was badly burned in a big fire. She enjoyed being alone, lost in books and melodies on her guitar. Shortly after Lisa’s 15th birthday, Chris, Lisa’s father, was stricken by a severe illness and lost his ability to walk. However, Chris managed to provide for the family. He sent his daughters to school and did everything possible to improve their lives. But their difficulties never ceased, mainly after he had to spend much on his mother’s heart treatment. It appeared as though fate had only terrible plans for this family.
Lisa knew everything, and she couldn’t bear to watch her daddy struggling so much. She wanted to help relieve her family’s burden. “What can I do to improve our lives ” Lisa lost in deep thought. One day, a leaflet promoting a local music contest landed on Lisa’s foot. Lisa’s eyes sparkled with hope when she read it and saw that the cash prize was $25,000.
Lisa secretly registered for the music contest. Over the years, she had been passionate about music, skilled at playing the guitar and mastering numerous musical pieces. Now, she needed to compose an original song, sing it and accompany it with her guitar. Lisa locked herself in her room in her spare time, preparing for the contest. In her original composition, she illustrated the joyful moments spent with her family, and she emphasized her heart felt gratitude for her father’s contribution to the entire household. Her lyrics over-flowed with genuine emotion. She tirelessly worked on the song, determined to perfect her performance. With the date for the contest approaching, Lisa spent more time on her preparations. She seemed no longer afraid to look at herself in the mirror. She often stood in front of the mirror, practiced her song and imagined her performance on the stage. Hopefully, she thought she would give her father a big surprise.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

M: My name is Bruce. I was born in Newcastle, not a big city, with a population of about 200,000, er… and it is located on the River Tyne, in the northeast of England, not the Thames. There are five bridges over the River Tyne, and they link Newcastle to the next town Gateshead, where there is one of the biggest shopping centers in the world. From the saying “Don’t carry coal to Newcastle”, as you know, a few years ago, the main industries were shipbuilding and coal-mining, but now the chemical and soap industries are more important. I moved from Newcastle ten years ago but I often return. I miss the people, who are so warm and friendly, and I miss the wild, beautiful countryside near the city, where there are so many hills and streams. People who are both born near the River Tyne have a special name. They are called “Georgies”. I am very pleased to be a “Georgie”!

根据第一段内容“They were dying due to heat exposure at a rapid rate. ‘How can I help them ’ Then he had an idea: Trees can provide shade for them!(他们因高温而迅速死亡。“我能帮他们什么?”然后他有了一个想法:树可以为他们提供荫凉!)”可知,那些被冲上岸的蛇快热(晒)死,Jadav栽树的初衷是为了救它们。故选A项。
根据第二段内容“At one time, villages upstream had redirected the river, creating more forceful currents around the island and carrying away the soil, thus damaging the natural habitats of its wildlife. As a consequence, much of the island became barren sand, and an entire community was at risk of being displaced.(有一段时间,上游的村庄改变了河流的方向,在岛屿周围形成了更强劲的水流,带走了土壤,从而破坏了野生动物的自然栖息地。结果,岛上大部分地区变成了贫瘠的沙子,整个社区都面临流离失所的风险。)”可知,上游村庄改变了河道,岛屿周围形成的更强劲的水流带走了土壤,生态栖息地遭到破坏,从而导致了一系列后果。因此,主要原因应是村民们对河流的改道。

34.细节理解题。根据文章最后两句“Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with an unforgiving surface such as concrete (混凝土). This means sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from workouts. (研究表明,在沙子上行走对你的关节和肌肉来说要容易得多,尤其是与坚硬的混凝土表面相比。这意味着沙子是一个更好的表面,可以帮助运动员更快地从训练中恢复)”可知,混凝土不适合运动员的训练。故选B。

The big day arrived, and Lisa was nervous. She gathered all her courage and walked onto the stage. Her heart beat fast as she sensed the audiences’ eyes on her, their sympathetic glances directed at her scar. “Just let it go,” she told herself and tried to keep calm. Fingering her guitar, she poured her emotions into singing her original composition. However, she did not make it to the final round. Lisa was terribly upset and returned home heart-broken.
Despite not winning the contest, Lisa’s performance impressed many audiences, including a musician. Three days after the contest, the musician, accompanied by the host of the contest, came to Lisa’s home. The musician offered Lisa the chance to join a band and receive professional music training because Lisa had music al talent. Thrilled by the unexpected opportunity, Lisa’s spirits lifted as she realized that her journey was far from over. With renewed determination, she started this new chapter, eager to see where it would take her. And she realized that talent, not beauty, was what mattered most.
