Sitting in front of the television may be relaxing, but spending too much time in front of it may takes years off your life. Watching less television may help you live a much longer life.
Australian researchers (研究人员) did a study with more than 11,000 people over the age of 25. Their study showed that if people watched TV for six hours a day, they lived about 4. 8 years less than those who didn’t watch any television. Also, people who are over the age of 25 lose 22 minutes of life for each hour of TV that they watch.
Sitting in front of the television isn’t healthy. The more TV you watch, the less exercise you’ll get. And the less exercise you get, the more likely it is that you’ll get sick.
Lennert Veerman, the researcher who led the study, says watching too much TV will influence people’s life expectancies (预期寿命), even for people who have a good eating habit. He thinks it’s reasonable for doctors to start asking their patients about how much TV they watch, as it can be an indicator (指标) of someone’s health.

Grade 8 students all need to do it, and there’s a tai chi competition every year for Grade 8 students. “Diferent from ball games, tai chi can make me relaxed and help me get ready for the next class,” said Gao.
“I really enjoy hip-hop dance,” Ren Jianing, a high school student, said, “The class doesn’t need any experience, so anyone can learn. ” Every class they practice a part of the dance and in the next class put the parts together into a whole dance. “Our shirts are all wet after class even on the coldest days of winter,” said Ren.

① As Daddy’s only daughter, I knew what made my Daddy more wonderful than all the other fathers, I’d ever seen or heard of — his large hands.
② Daddy had long smart fingers (指头) that could make lots of paper toys for me to play with. His hands could tie my hair beautifully. That’s why I felt happy when the other students talked about my hairstyle. I kept it to myself for years. His hands could paint a second-band bike to look new. I got one on my tenth birthday. His hands could cook a delicious and colorful meal in minutes. I was always interested in watching his hands work. Even as I grew hungrier, I felt happy watching his hands.
③ Daddy’s creative hands were also useful and hard-working. They could fly a kite high in the sky as well as to get it down from the top of a tree. They could wash my white dress clean, which became my favorite one. To my surprise, those hands fed seven children after Mom died. It was his feelings that showed what he really was, far more than his abilities.
④ Not only were Daddy’s hands great, they could also send me a note full of love. When I was ill, he made me feel better. He would take a small blanket (毯子), warm it up and cover it around my small cold feet with his loving hands. They seemed to understand I was feeling terrible before I could cry. When I was worried about something, Daddy would often hand me a cup of hot milk and sat next to me. He would say, “The best is always to come, my dear.”

When Carolyn McDaniel gets up, his cat Buddy often comes in and meows. If McDaniel doesn’t understand him immediately, Buddy will be angry. McDaniel works at the animal research centre in New York. He is studying cats’ meow these days.
Listen to cats, and you’ll hear lots of sounds. Purring is a sign of a contented (满意的) cat. But cats purr when they’re in danger, too. Cats that hiss are not contented. They make the sound if they’re looking for food. However, chirr is a friendly greeting. Mother cats also chirr to call their children.
To understand cats’ language, McDaniel taped hundreds of cats’ meows in different situations. Then humans listened through headphones. People who were more familiar (熟悉的) with cats did better in understanding the meows. But even the cat owners got the right answers only about 30% of the time.
Why is it so difficult to understand cat’s meow Sam, who belongs to 15-year-old Jenna, makes a sound Meh-Meh when he sees birds outside. But 17-year-old Nick’s cat, Kitty, goes Mrak-Mrak in the same situation. Meows differ in the same situation. Still, cats themselves do all right at communicating their general feelings because they also use body language.
Now, McDaniel thinks that people would probably do much better in understanding cats’ meow with the help of videos, because we can see cats communicate (交流) a lot with body language: head position, eye contact, and even tail movement. “Body language can also be difficult to understand, but glad that we have found a new way at least,” says McDaniel.

16. The passage is mainly about ________.

It was the last day of the school year. The classroom was filled with excitement. When our teacher, Mr. Johnson, walked in, holding a CD player, everyone’s face lit up with a smile. We knew that this wasn’t going to be another normal day, but a special one.
“Please calm down and sit,” said Mr. Johnson, “I’m glad everyone’s here for the final reading test of the year.” When everyone cried, Mr. Johnson laughed, saying it was just a joke. Then he reminded us that we still had a job to do. “You need to clean out your desks and put all your things into your backpacks.” he added gently.
As we began our task, Mr. Johnson turned on the CD player. The lively music made the room feel like a party. Some of us started singing along with the music, others were dancing around their desks while they were cleaning them out. Even Mr. Johnson showed us a few dance steps, making everyone laugh heartily. After we finished cleaning, someone asked, “When is break time ” Mr. Johnson took out some balls and started playing with them. Suddenly, he let the balls drop and said, “Break time starts ... now!”
Just as we were about to rush out, our headmaster, Mrs. Miller, appeared at the door. “Mr. Johnson!” she cried out. A moment of silence fell over the room as we thought, “Mr. Johnson might be in trouble.” However, to our surprise, Mrs. Miller couldn’t help but laugh at the sight and left us to enjoy our break.
During break time, Mr. Johnson surprised us with another treat. He went to the cafe and came back with ice creams for everyone. We all cheered for him!

The race is on to get more electric cars on the road. People predict that electric cars might be more common in the future. But according to a 2021 survey by Pew Research Center, more than half of U, S, adults like gas-powered cars better. They say electric cars are expensive and charging (充电) them is a big problem. For now, most people plan to stick with gas-powered cars. We ask young readers what they think about electric cars.
Henry, 12 years old, San Francisco I think we should all have electric cars. This would cut down air pollution and allow us to breathe better. Cleaner air also means there will be fewer animals dying. Think of all the lives we have lost by destroying our environment. Some people think electric cars are pricey. But their prices are coming down. What’s more, gas costs a lot more than electricity. Once you use the gas, it’s gone. Anyway, I think we’re going to run out of gas at some point. This will make electric cars a need. Also, do you know that electric cars can travel 33 miles for about a dollar You can’t say that for gas. All cars should be electric!
Sandy, 13 years old, New York I don’t think all cars should be electric. First of all, charging stations are less common than gas stations. This makes electric cars a lot less convenient for long trips. What’s more, cold weather does harm to the batteries (电池). They can’t work well as usual. And electric cars are also more expensive than common cars. A new electric car usually costs around $ 11, 000 more than a new gar car. True, electric cars help slow climate change. But throwing batteries away can hurt our planet.

Bananas are good snack(点心). Not only are they sweet and delicious, but they are easy to take around, so you can take them anywhere. Best of all, bananas provide (提供) different things that the human body needs!
Bananas grow best in warm places that get lots of rain. They grow on plants that look like trees. The banana plant, however, is considered a herb (草本) rather than a tree because it doesn’t have a strong, woody stem (干、茎). The plants can grow as high as 30 feet. When they reach their full height, flowers grow out from the stem. These flowers produce bananas.
Two or three times each year, the plants produce fruit. The bananas grow together, which seem like "hands". A hand is made up of 10 to 20 bananas. Growers sometimes call bananas "fingers". Each bunch (丛) of bananas has about 15 hands, and so a whole bunch may have as many as 200 bananas and can weigh more than 100 pounds.
After about three months, farmers pick(摘) the bananas. At this point, they still aren’t the sunny yellow color: bananas. Farmers pick them when they’re green. That’s how they’re shipped to stores. They turn yellow along the way and are ready to be sold.
If you love bananas, you’ve got a lot of company. Americans have been enjoying bananas since the first shipment arrived in the United States in 1876. Today Americans eat more bananas than any other fruit. More bananas are sold than apples and grapes together. Every American eats over 26 pounds of bananas each year!

Do you have true friends Do you want to know better between you and your friends There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friends is simply an acquaintance (熟人). All you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friends at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friends does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friends could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories. You usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears, and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friends, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. Sometimes they may not be perfect, but at least they will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose (故意地) to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

As for this reason, Veerman thinks people should try to turn off the TV or even live without TV and get off the sofa to get some exercise. “Exercise is good,” he said. “Even light activity is good for health. ”

⑤ The more I read Daddy’s hands, the more stories I get from them. Daddy’s hands were fantastic. They had the knowledge (知识) and power to move mountains. They made the impossible possible.
