At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on
presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
24.What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”
A.It was lucky so she gladly accepted it. B.She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C.She understood the intention but still disliked it. D.Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
25.The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______.
A.pick up a new hobby B.reconnect with her origin
C.gain insights into a new culture D.fit in with local community
26.From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ______.
A.reflects the creator’s spirits B.comes from creative energy
C.highlights the design of strokes D.depends on continuous practice
27.What does the author intend to tell us
A.Appreciate what our culture offers. B.Find beauty from your inner self.
C.A great teacher leads you to truth. D.We are the sum of what we create.
C
It’s commonly acknowledged that our lives are ruled by algorithms (算法), but have we really collectively understood how they have transformed our culture and personality
In Filterworld: How algorithms flattened culture, Kyle Chayka argues convincingly that the rise of algorithm-driven feeds, used everywhere online from Instagram to Spotify, has led to a more uniform culture. Our tastes and desires increasingly don’t belong to us, but to algorithms that are designed to keep people engaged at all costs. If the collection of our tastes truly shapes our entire personality, then this loss is more psychologically damaging than it first appears. Aimlessly scrolling (滚屏) through Netflix or TikTok may seem harmless, but over
days, months or years, we lose touch with what we like and enjoy.
Taste-making algorithms are inescapable. Chayka shows this by working through all corners of life: what we wear(TikTok), where we eat(Google Maps), music we listen to(Spotify), even who we date or marry(Tinder). This universe of algorithm-driven decisions has society-wide implications: “It extends to influence our physical spaces, our cities, and the routes we move through…flattening them in turn.” No one gets out of the Filterworld untouched.
If you’re lucky enough not to need any sort of algorithm-based system for your work, then you have the option to step back from algorithms for a while. But if your friend suggests a film recommended on X/Twitter or you feel the need to buy those shoes suddenly everyone has started wearing after social media advertisements, what are you to do It all feels fruitless.
This Filterworld may be inescapable, but there is hope. You can start by engaging more with the media you do choose to consume. This could mean reading up about a film you watched or paying artists you like directly. Even the thoughtful act of recommending an album (专辑) to a friend is more rewarding than a random TikTok feed. As Chayka says, resistance to algorithms “requires an act of willpower, a choice to move through the world in a different way.”
28.What is Kyle Chayka’s opinion on algorithms
A.They improve our tastes. B.They make our culture more alike.
C.They help to identify our personality. D.They contribute to psychological problems.
29.What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 refer to
A.The society with advanced technology. B.The world without social media platforms.
C.The network of algorithm-driven decisions. D.The community free from algorithmic influence.
30.Which of the following is a way to resist the impact of algorithms
A.Limiting the use of social media platforms. B.Making choices based on friends’ suggestions.
C.Getting more involved with the selected media. D.Disconnecting from social media advertisements.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Algorithms: Cultural Takeover B.The Secret of Algorithms

Led by University College London researchers and published in the Nature journal, an international collaboration of 356 scientists uncovered that just 2% of rainforest tree species account for 50% of the trees found in tropical forests across Africa, the Amazon and south-east Asia. Similar patterns have been found else where in
the natural world. Researchers have discovered that just 1,000 species account for half of Earth's 800 billion trees in tropical rainforests, with 46,000 species making up the rest.
“If we focus on understanding the commonest tree species, we can probably predict how the whole forest will respond to today's rapid environmental changes,” said the lead author, Declan Cooper. The team demonstrated that while African tropical forests have fewer total species compared with the Amazon and south-east Asia, their diversity follows the same pattern. The analysis is based on more than 1m tree samples across 2,048 hectares of rainforest at 1,568locations. They found that about 2.2% species made up 50% of the trees across the biome (生物群系).
Researchers said the findings indicate that a mechanism (机制) may govern the distribution of all the world's tropical forests. They plan to focus future work on identifying the potential rule, given the geographic differences of the forests they studied. African tropical forests experience a drier, cooler climate than the two other regions, while those in south-east Asia are spread across disconnected islands. The Amazon is a large region of connected forests in which humans have been living for a shorter time than the other regions.
The senior author, Prof Simon Lewis said, “We wanted to look at tropical forests in a new way. Rare species need special attention to protect them, but quick and important gains in knowledge to understand these precious forests will come from a scientific focus on the commonest tree species.”
32.What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A.The number of the tree species around the world.
B.The dangers to the rare species in the tropical forests.
C.An international campaign launched by 356 scientists.
D.A pattern of the tree species found in world's rainforests.
33.What is a typical feature of the African tropical forests
A.They feature a drier and cooler climate.
B.They are not habitable for human beings.
C.They have more diversity despite fewer species.
D.They are formed mainly by disconnected islands.
34.Which of the following might Prof Simon Lewis disagree with
A.New perspective is helpful to understand the environment.
B.The world's rainforests share similar common tree species.
C.More and more efforts should be made to study rare species now.
D.The commonest tree species are vital in understanding tropical forests.
35.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.A journal on ecology.
B.A science book of plants.
C.A magazine on rainforest.
D.A travel brochure of Africa.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is likely that you've heard that the pitter-pattering (噼啪声) of raindrops can help people fall asleep. There's also research that supports the idea that rain sounds are a useful sleep aid. Here's what to know.
36
Rain sounds mask other sharper noises in your environment. Think of a dripping faucet (水龙头) in the other room —in silence, it could be very annoying. With a masking background of wind in the leaves, a soft rain, or some gentle waves playing on a speaker, the drip would never be detected. 37 .
Rain sounds might literally hit the right frequencies
By masking background sounds, rain tracks might seem like they're just ordinary white noise ——but they aren't. Named after colors, white noise is an umbrella term for a variety of sounds. Rain sounds are considered pink noise, which is characterized by louder sounds at a low frequency and softer sounds at high frequencies. 38 . But this may not be the case for everyone.
Rain sounds have a calming effect
Apart from helping people fall asleep, rain sounds can be straight-up relaxing. It may be explained by the fact that they're a natural sound and natural sounds are psychologically beneficial. 39 . For example, people exposed to nature sounds in a 2017 study had an increased nerve response, which means that the calming part of their nervous system was activated by these tracks.
Rain sounds could be meat or poison
40 . Different sounds will bring out different responses depending on the individual. One person's gentle rain is others' flood worry or need to go to the bathroom. Similarly, gentle rain with distant thunder is calming for some and alarming for others. Will they work for you There's only one way to find out!
A.Rain sounds hide other noises
B.Rain sounds are a universal tool
C.White noise makes people fall asleep quickly
D.So rain sounds can create a calming background “music”
E.Rain sounds might help someone, but they're not for everyone
F.Pink noise in particular can improve sleep in healthy individuals
G.The benefits include increased learning capacity and reduced anxiety

I was eight years old when my family moved from Towoomba to England in 1950. My mother was suffering from a rare disease and had to take treatment in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father sent his five-year-old red heeler (Australian cattle dog), Spider, who was loved by us all, to his friend Sandy, as Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas. We didn’t know how long my mother’s treatment would take or how long we would be away.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father’s face as he read this news. My mother and I tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was.
Sandy had advertised constantly on the media. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seemed Spider just kept running and searching for us. My father worried he would be shot or dead from starvation. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and my father immediately began his own search for Spider. He repeated calls to the people who had said they had seen his dog, but it turned out to be clueless.
One cold winter’s Saturday morning, eight months after our return, my father had a call from Gin Gin, 375 kilometers from Toowoomba. An elderly lady living on her own was putting food out “for a very old yellow dog”. This had been going on for a few weeks. Immediately we set off.
Five and a half hours later, we found the old house beside the bush (灌木丛). Sadly, the lady told my father that the dog hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had an upset look in his eyes. He put two fingers to his mouth and did his special whistle for Spider.

【原文】W: Hello. My product was supposed to come by 10:30. I waited all day for the order. So what are you going to do about it
M: We’re very sorry, madam. Please give us another half an hour.
2.A
【原文】W: Hi Jack. I had some juice in the cafe this afternoon and I think I may have left my history textbook there. You live next door, so could you pop in tomorrow morning to get it for me
M: Sure. The teacher will be annoyed if you don’t have it with you.
3.C
【原文】M: It leaves in five minutes — surely you put it inside your passport, like you usually do.
W: Yeah. And I always keep them in the side of my handbag, but the boarding pass isn’t there.
4.C
【原文】M: What does the weather forecast say
W: There’s quite a lot of fog this morning but it should clear to give a fine day around midday. Then a change as we move into the weekend. We can expect heavy rain as the clouds move in.
5.B
【原文】W: Did you hear that news item this morning about a tree survey
M: Yes, it said that 70% of city schoolchildren can’t tell the difference between common trees. I know loads of different trees.
W: Well, we live in the country, so I suppose it’s easier for us.
6.A 7.B
【原文】M: Good morning, ma’am. How was your stay
W: Great, thanks. Before I check out, let me ask your advice. Would you suggest I drive to the meeting center or take a cab I don’t know if there’s any parking there.
M: Actually, it’s close enough to walk. If you turn right at the corner next to the restaurant and then go two blocks, you’ll be there. It’s just past the train station.
W: Wonderful! I’d rather not drive around looking for parking or pay cab fare.
8.A 9.D
【原文】M: What did you think of the concert then Saw you up there on the balcony.
W: It was awesome — at least Sally Rydout was — but an old-fashioned theatre was a funny place to hold a rock concert. It was like all gold paint and red carpets everywhere.
M: Oh, I thought that was cool — anyway I got my ticket at half price because I bought it half an hour before the concert started.
W: I should have done that too. Because I didn’t think the support bands were up to much actually.
M: No, same old stuff — glad I didn’t pay full price!

【原文】M: Hello. I’d like to send this package to Switzerland.
W: Can you put it on the scales, please OK, so that’s about 13 pounds. That’ll be f5. 50 by surface mail. It should be there in under two weeks. What’s in it, anyway Books or DVDs
M: Neither, some brochures for a colleague. How long will it take by airmail
W: Airmail will take three days. I’ll just check the price …Oh, f6. 00. Not much difference.
M: Oh, well, I’ll send it by airmail then. Is it safe I mean, this is quite important.
W: Well, if you want a signature when it’s delivered, you can send it by International Signed For. That’s an extra 3. 50.
M: I see.
W: Or, for an extra f4. 50, you can send it by Air sure. That means online tracking for the whole journey. It’s the most secure way to send it, and fastest, too.
M: Oh, right. I’ll send it by the last way you said. The quickest.

【原文】W: Martin, you’ve played many superheroes in the films. What is the hardest part of playing a superhero
M: Well, you have to be fit to play the role, but getting your body in shape isn’t the hardest part. It’s mastering all that leaping, falling, turning and rolling. That’s actually the trickiest.
W: So how did you get into acting
M: I’d never considered it. I studied literature at university, but never involved in any drama clubs. After graduating, I worked for a comedy producer and it just went from there.
W: You grew up in Canada. How was that
M: Great! For my brothers, it was more about sports at weekends. I was the only one of my brothers that was
interested in the cinema. But I wasn’t the sort of fan with posters all over the wall.
W: What would you have done if you hadn’t become an actor
M: My dad is a police officer; my mother and all my grandparents are doctors. Even so, neither of those jobs appeals to me. My older brother has an import-export company, and I guess I would have a job with him.
W: Thank you, Martin.

【详解】My name is Sandra. I run my own deep-sea business in the Orkney Islands. It was never my ambition to become a diving instructor. In fact, teaching was the last thing I wanted to do. I’d actually set my sights on becoming a research scientist. It was after high school, during a year off in Australia, that I first went diving. I loved it from the first. Back in Britain, I didn’t study geography or anything connected with diving at university because I’d already got a place waiting for me on a maths course. But I joined an underwater club and I trained for a qualification which allowed me to become a diving instructor. After that, I worked as a diving instructor in South Africa and then Jamaica until I’d saved up enough money to come back to Britain and I did another course —a master’s degree in Marine Resource Development. As soon as the course was over, I set up my own company. The business is called North Atlantic Diving. Some of the clients come from personal recommendations of satisfied customers, and some people respond to the advertisements in magazines. But most of the divers find us when they’re browsing on the Internet. Now, I’m really satisfied with my life and my work.
