Growing up in Ukraine, Vadim didn’t know what it was like to live in a safe, stable home. His parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container, breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see—but only just a little.
By the time Vadim turned 9, he was living in an orphanage (孤儿院). Unfortunately, as is the case with far too many little ones, his life only got worse there. Not only was he hurt, but he was placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.
This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and mentally exhausting. He’d often be late for meals. If the food wasn’t already gone by the time he arrived, other kids would steal from him.
Then, a chain effect began when some special folks visited the orphanage. They told him a story about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.
Today, Vadim is no longer the boy subject to fate. He is a father to his own kids, and his life couldn’t be more different or better. Over the years, he’s discovered a gift for expressing himself through art. This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable (脆弱的) people around the world, to ask if he`d like to create a piece that represented what it looked and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”
The result A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. His new direction includes a beautiful forest full of fall leaves and bright light, showing the hope he is said to have found in the inspiring story.
24. According to the passage, Vadim’s parents treated him ________.
A. strictly B. cruelly C. thoughtfully D. forgivingly
25. Why did Vadim crawl up and down the stairs when living in the orphanage
A. Because his little roommates often did damage to his wheelchair.
B. Because other children would take his meal without permission.
C. Because he couldn’t use the wheelchair to go downstairs from a high floor.
D. Because getting downstairs was demanding for him physically and mentally.
26. What does the underlined phrase “a chain effect” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. An effective treatment for Vadim’s disability.
B. A helping hand from Tim Tebow Foundation.
C. A sense of hope from the story of a spiritual figure.
D. A series of positive changes occurring in Vadim’s life.
27. What is the message that Vadim wants to convey in his remarkable painting
A. He is expert at delicate painting techniques.
B. He leads a miserable life with his own kids.
C. He admires the beauty and harmony of nature.
D. He says farewell to the past and harvests happiness.

“Big Tree,” an old southern live oak, sits in a park just outside Orlando’s business district. It’s been struck by lightning at least three times and has survived many hurricanes — and it grew from a seed around the same time Juan Ponce de León’s ship first landed on Florida’s eastern coast.
Over 400 years old, the tree is so impressive that members of a Michigan-based nonprofit flew to Orlando in February to climb the tree and cut branches and leaves. The researchers are now in the midst of the process to grow new roots from the cuttings. The reason: To clone the historic tree, store its DNA and plant potentially thousands of cloned trees across the Southeast.
In order to clone an ancient tree, researchers must climb it to find a piece of live tissue. The freshly cut branches and leaves are taken to the group’s lab in Michigan, where, in climate-controlled rooms, researchers work to promote growth from the cuttings.
The most common method is by rooted cuttings. In this method, a tip of a tree’s branch is dipped (蘸) into hormones, placed into a foam plug (泡沫塞) and set inside a mist room. Then, the waiting begins. A sign of life can take several months to a year to show, if one comes at all. In another method called tissue culture, researchers take a quarter-inch of branch, dip it into a mixture made up of a dozen hormones and other chemicals, seal (密封) it in a container and wait to see whether it will grow roots.
Experts lauded the group for its creative methods and reproduction in large numbers, but they doubt whether the clones will grow as the originals do. Scott Merkle, a professor of forest biology at the University of Georgia, said, “There are so many variables that there’s no certainty that they will be able to survive and perform better than other trees that you plant on the same land”. He added that the age of historic trees makes them difficult to study. “I think it’s a great thing that they’re doing…I just don’t know how realistic it is.”
28. According to the passage, what do the researchers aim to do
A. To clone an ancient tree from its original.
B. To save thousands of trees across the Southeast.
C. To analyze the effects of climate on tree growth.
D. To study the reason for the survival of “Big Tree”.
29. What do we know about the two methods mentioned in paragraph 4
A. Tissue culture is the most frequently used method.
B. There is a chance that the branch will fail to grow roots.
C. In the first method the live tissue is sealed in a container.
D. A mixture of hormones and other chemicals is needed in both methods.
30. What does the underlined word “lauded” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Joined. B. Praised. C. Charged. D. Contacted.
31. What’s Scott Merkle’s attitude to the group’s work
A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Cautious. D. Unclear.
D
Some girls tend to feel frustrated if they have a pear-shaped body, with hips that are wider than the bust (胸部) and shoulders. While pear-shaped people’s waists are typically smaller, they may have more fat on their hips and legs. As a result, many pear-shaped girls try to hide their hips and legs under large dresses and pants.
However, a recent study suggested that pear-shaped people are the ones who won the genetic lottery!
A study published in September by the US National Library of Medicine found that the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) shows the strongest and most consistent association with mortality. Traditionally, the body mass index (BMI) has been considered the best indicator of health. However, this study challenges this belief. It surveyed nearly 40,000 people and found that, regardless of BMI, WHR is positively correlated with all-cause mortality (all of the deaths that occur in a population no matter the cause). The larger the WHR, the higher the all-cause mortality rate will be. Instead of focusing on how much fat a person has, scientists involved in this study suggest people should focus more on how fat is distributed in a person’s body.
WHR, as its name suggests, compares your waist measurement to your hip measurement. A larger waistline means more central fat, which could indicate more visceral fat (内脏脂肪), also known as toxic fat. Harvard Medical School states that more visceral fat increases the risk of illnesses including diabetes, heart diseases and asthma. That’s why people with a pear-shaped body tend to be healthier than others. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy WHR is less than 0.85 for women and less than 0.9 for men.
It is impossible to specifically target waist fat when people try to lose weight. But losing overall fat will make the waist smaller. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University suggested we eat less carbohydrates and more food higher in fiber and protein. Moreover, doing strength training helps build more muscle, which makes you burn more calories even when you’re resting.
32. Why do pear-shaped girls prefer baggy trousers
A. To show off their long legs. B. To hide their broad shoulders.
C. To cover their wide hips and thick legs. D. To showcase their slim waists.
33. What does the recent study find that goes against the conventional belief
A. Pear-shaped people are much healthier.
B. WHR consistently correlates with death rate.
C. Pear-shaped people are lucky to win lotteries.
D. A smaller BMI indicates healthier physical condition.
34. What does the author primarily intend to do in Paragraph 4
A. To announce the standard WHR set by World Health Organization.
B. To introduce what WHR refers to and how to measure our waistlines.
C. To explain why pear-shaped body are likely to be healthier than others.
D. To reveal the huge risks of various illnesses visceral fat can bring about.
35. What’s the text mainly about
A. A practical tip for losing waist fat.
B. A healthy WHR recommended by WHO.
C. A typical body shape bringing good to health.
D. A surprise bonus won by pear-shaped bodies.

Sharing New Year with Strangers
I come from a large multicultural family, spread out across the globe. Despite being found in distant corners of the world, we’re a tight-knit family that makes an effort to stay close and keep in touch. New Year has always been a special time for us and a chance for us all to come together, no matter where in the world we might be.
My aunt Samantha, known affectionately by everyone in the family as Mantha, loved New Year and always went out of her way to make it cosy and magical for everyone around her. Mantha was kind, fun and full of energy so it wasn’t hard to get into the New Year spirit when she was around.
This year was no exception. Mantha drove three hours from her house in Bournemouth to visit everyone two weeks before New Year and to drop off presents to her friends still in the area. We chatted merrily about our plans, laughed at how organized Mantha was — presents already bought and wrapped and the freezer full ahead of the big day — and kissed goodbye when it was time to leave. So just several days before New Year, when Mantha’s son called us saying Samantha had passed away suddenly at home, none of us could quite believe it. I’d only been messaging her the day before, sharing voice notes like we always liked to do.
Mantha had had a blood clot (血块) that had unfortunately travelled to her lung and despite the paramedic’s best efforts, they were unable to save my beloved, fun, wonderful aunt.
So close to New Year, none of us felt like celebrating and we decided we’d have a quiet day at home, surrounded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law, Vera, told us about some colleagues of hers who’d just arrived in the UK far away from friends and family. And they were eager to experience a proper English New Year.

【possible version】
Hearing this, we were in a dilemma. We were still immersed in enormous grief of aunt Mantha’s passing away. However, it was cruel to decline the burning anticipation of Vera’s colleagues. Just when we didn’t know what to do, Mantha’s kind smile popped into my head. I realized Mantha would have wanted us to open our doors and give them a cosy and magical New Year to remember, just like she did to everyone before. At the last minute, we dashed around shops, adding to the trolly presents, extra bottles of drinks and snacks.
When the day finally came, we welcomed them into our house. To give our new guests the full New Year experience, we tried hard to put our pain aside. We opened presents together, ate a fancy dinner and played wonderful games. All these didn’t ease the pain of Mantha’s absence but connecting with strangers and sharing our culture helped us get through the day. The first New Year without Mantha was difficult but it took on a deeper, more special meaning. It came from being together, putting aside our differences and showing one another love.

B 22. B 23. D
根据文章第三段“The site’s search features make it easy for you to find classes to fit your schedule. You can browse courses based on your learning plans, such as scheduling classes in two weeks, three months or a year from now. (该网站的搜索功能使您可以轻松找到适合您时间表的课程。你可以根据自己的学习计划浏览课程,比如安排两周、三个月或一年后的课程)”可知,哈佛大学在线课程提供了很大的灵活性,这是它们特殊的一个方面。学习者可以自由地安排学习时间,不受时间和地点的限制。故选B。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“There’s no certificate, degree or course credit option available through the site because it’s exclusively a free offering for those who want to expand their academic knowledge.
根据第一段中“His parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container, breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see—but only just a little.(他的父母都是酒鬼,经常打他。他们甚至把他塞进一个葡萄酒容器里,把他小小的身体弄伤,只在顶部留下一个小口,让他可以呼吸和看到外面——但只有一点点)”可知,Vadim常常遭到父母的虐待,对他很残忍。故选B项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Not only was he hurt, but he was placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.(他不仅受伤了,而且被安置在三楼的一个房间里,坐轮椅根本无法下楼)”和第三段中“This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and mentally exhausting.(这让瓦迪姆在楼梯上爬上爬下,这是一项身心俱疲的活动)”可知,Vadim只能爬上爬下楼梯是因为坐在轮椅上无法下楼。
根据第四段划线词后文“They told him a story about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.(他们给他讲了一个关于一位提倡爱和宽恕的精神人物的故事。这次谈话帮助这个14岁的男孩找到了他的信仰,反过来,他比以往任何时候都有了更多的希望)”可知,这些人的到访让Vadim找到信仰,给他带来希望,这些都积极的变化,故当一些特殊的人参观孤儿院时,一系列积极变化开始了,划线词a chain effect指的是D项“Vadim生活中发生的一系列积极变化”。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable people around the world, to ask if he`d like to create a piece that represented what it looked and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”(这激发了Tim Tebow Foundation的灵感,该基金会是一个为世界上最弱势群体而战的组织,他们问他是否愿意创作一件作品,代表他从“黑暗走向光明”的样子和感觉)”和最后一段中“A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. His new direction includes a beautiful forest full of fall leaves and bright light, showing the hope he is said to have found in the inspiring story.(这幅画作极为引人注目,描绘了瓦迪姆坐在轮椅上,告别他的旧家,其中包括他曾被父母塞进去的酒桶。他新的旅程方向是一片充满秋日落叶和明亮光线的美丽森林,象征着他在那鼓舞人心的故事中找到的希望之光)”可推知,Vadim想在这幅非凡的画作中表达的是他从黑暗走向光明,告别过去,收获幸福。故选D项。
C
A 29. B 30. B 31. C
根据第二段中“The researchers are now in the midst of the process to grow new roots from the cuttings. The reason: To clone the historic tree, store its DNA and plant potentially thousands of cloned trees across the Southeast.(研究人员目前正在从插枝上培育新根。原因是:为了克隆这棵历史悠久的树,储存它的 DNA,并在东南部种植数千棵克隆树)”可知,研究人员的目的是从原树中克隆一棵古树。故选A。
根据第四段“The most common method is by rooted cuttings. In this method, a tip of a tree’s branch is dipped (蘸) into hormones, placed into a foam plug (泡沫塞) and set inside a mist room. Then, the waiting begins. A sign of life can take several months to a year to show, if one comes at all. In another method called tissue culture, researchers take a quarter-inch of branch, dip it into a mixture made up of a dozen hormones and other chemicals, seal(密封) it in a container and wait to see whether it will grow roots.(最常见的方法是生根扦插。
根据划线单词所在句子“Experts lauded the group for its creative methods and reproduction in large numbers, but they doubt whether the clones will grow as the originals do.(专家们对该组织的创新方法和大量繁殖表示lauded,但他们怀疑克隆体是否会像原代植物那样生长。)”
根据最后一段Scott Merkle所说的话“He added that the age of historic trees makes them difficult to study. “I think it’s a great thing that they’re doing…I just don’t know how realistic it is.”(他补充说,古树的年龄使得研究它们变得困难。“我认为他们正在做的事情很棒……我只是不知道这有多现实。”)”可知,Scott Merkle对这一团队的工作表示赞美,同时他也表示了自己的担忧,由此可推知,他的态度是谨慎的,故选C。
D
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. C 35. D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究发现,梨形身材的人往往比其他人更健康,对此进行了解释说明。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“As a result, many pear-shaped girls try to hide their hips and legs under large dresses and pants.(因此,许多梨形身材的女孩试图把臀部和腿藏在大裙子和裤子下面)”可知,梨形身材的女孩更喜欢宽松的裤子是为了遮住他们宽大的臀部和粗腿。
根据第三段“A study published in September by the US National Library of Medicine found that the waist-to-hip ratio(WHR) shows the strongest and most consistent association with mortality. Traditionally, the body mass index (BMI) has been considered the best indicator of health. However, this study challenges this belief. (美国国家医学图书馆9月份发表的一项研究发现,腰臀比(WHR)与死亡率的关系最密切、最一致。传统上,身体质量指数(BMI)被认为是健康的最佳指标。然而,这项研究挑战了这种观点)”可知,最近的研究发现WHR始终与死亡率相关与传统观念相反。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“WHR, as its name suggests, compares your waist measurement to your hip measurement. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), a healthy WHR is less than 0.85 for women and less than 0.9 for men.(WHR,顾名思义,比较你的腰围和臀围。
根据第二段“However, a recent study suggested that pear-shaped people are the ones who won the genetic lottery!(然而,最近的一项研究表明,梨形的人是那些赢得了基因彩票的人!)”
A 37. D 38. C 39. G 40. F
36. A。前文“Ru Ling loves spending time in skywells. To her, these courtyards of old Chinese houses are the perfect place to be on a hot and humid day.(茹玲喜欢待在天井里。对她来说,这些中国老房子的庭院是炎热潮湿的日子里的完美去处。)”介绍了茹玲对于天井的喜爱,因此A项“They are airy, cool, and well-shaded(它们通风、凉爽、阴凉)”符合语境,说明天井在炎热潮湿的日子里起到良好的降温效果,解释了前文她喜欢待在天井里的原因,其中的“airy,cool,and well-shaded”和前文的“on a hot and humid day”相对。故选 A。
37. D。前文“Ru says that the house's skywell helped to create this cooling effect.(茹说,房子的天井有助于产生这种冷却效果。)”描述茹玲对天井的称赞,后文“Studies have found that the temperatures inside some of the skywells in southern China are significantly lower than the outside.(研究发现,中国南方一些天井的内部温度明显低于外部温度。)” And she's not alone in praising the benefits of skywells in hot weather.(在炎热的天气里,她并不是唯一一个称赞天井好处的人。)”符合语境,指出很多人都称赞天井,承接前文,后文的研究发现是对天井好处的支撑,其中的“she”指代前文的“Ru”。故选D。
38. C。前文“In today’s China, fewer and fewer people live in houses with skywells.(在今天的中国,越来越少的人住在有天井的房子里。)”
39. G。前文“But a revival of interest in traditional Chinese architecture is leading some historic buildings with skywells to be restored for modern times.(但随着人们对中国传统建筑兴趣的复兴,一些带有天井的历史建筑被修复为现代建筑。)”
40. F。前文“Different from a northern Chinese courtyard, a skywell is smaller and less exposed to the outdoor environment.(与中国北方的庭院不同,天井更小并且更少暴露在室外环境中。)”介绍天井与北方庭院的不同之处,后文“It is either surrounded by rooms on four sides or three sides plus a wall.(它不是四面被房间包围,就是被三面加一堵墙包围。)”介绍天井通常的布局情况,因此F项“Although a skywell’s size and design vary from region to region, it is almost always located in the core of a house(虽然天井的大小和设计因地区而异,但它几乎总是位于房屋的核心)”符合语境,指出天井虽有大小和设计上的不同,但位置大致相似,承接前文的不同之处,引出后文的布局情况。

58. was used考查时态语态。 故填was used。
故填is pronounced。
短语be invited to do sth. 故填to introduce。
It be an honor to do sth.
故填that。
故填to。

Hearing this, we were in a dilemma. We were still immersed in enormous grief沉浸在巨大的悲痛中 of aunt Mantha’s passing away去世. However, it was cruel to decline the burning anticipation拒绝热切的期待 of Vera’s colleagues. Just when we didn’t know what to do, Mantha’s kind smile popped into my head突然想到. I realized Mantha would have wanted us to open our doors and give them a cosy and magical New Year to remember, just like she did to everyone before. At the last minute, we dashed around shops, adding to the trolly手推车 presents, extra bottles of drinks and snacks.
It came from being together, putting aside撇开 our differences and showing one another love.2023 级高二年级第一学期开学考试

Growing up in Ukraine, Vadim didn’t know what it was like to live in a safe, stable home. His
parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container,
breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see—but
only just a little.
By the time Vadim turned 9, he was living in an orphanage (孤儿院). Unfortunately, as is the
case with far too many little ones, his life only got worse there. Not only was he hurt, but he was
placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.
This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and
mentally exhausting. He’d often be late for meals. If the food wasn’t already gone by the time he
arrived, other kids would steal from him.
Then, a chain effect began when some special folks visited the orphanage. They told him a story
about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-
old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.
Today, Vadim is no longer the boy subject to fate. He is a father to his own kids, and his life
couldn’t be more different or better. Over the years, he’s discovered a gift for expressing himself
through art. This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable
(脆弱的) people around the world, to ask if he`d like to create a piece that represented what it looked
and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”
The result A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind
his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. His new direction includes a
beautiful forest full of fall leaves and bright light, showing the hope he is said to have found in the
inspiring story.

It’s
been struck by lightning at least three times and has survived many hurricanes — and it grew from a
seed around the same time Juan Ponce de León’s ship first landed on Florida’s eastern coast.
Over 400 years old, the tree is so impressive that members of a Michigan-based nonprofit flew
to Orlando in February to climb the tree and cut branches and leaves. The researchers are now in the
midst of the process to grow new roots from the cuttings. The reason: To clone the historic tree, store
its DNA and plant potentially thousands of cloned trees across the Southeast.
In order to clone an ancient tree, researchers must climb it to find a piece of live tissue. The
freshly cut branches and leaves are taken to the group’s lab in Michigan, where, in climate-controlled
rooms, researchers work to promote growth from the cuttings.
The most common method is by rooted cuttings. In this method, a tip of a tree’s branch is dipped
(蘸) into hormones, placed into a foam plug (泡沫塞) and set inside a mist room. Then, the waiting
begins. A sign of life can take several months to a year to show, if one comes at all. In another method
called tissue culture, researchers take a quarter-inch of branch, dip it into a mixture made up of a
dozen hormones and other chemicals, seal (密封) it in a container and wait to see whether it will grow
roots.
Experts lauded the group for its creative methods and reproduction in large numbers, but they
doubt whether the clones will grow as the originals do. Scott Merkle, a professor of forest biology at
the University of Georgia, said, “There are so many variables that there’s no certainty that they will
be able to survive and perform better than other trees that you plant on the same land”. He added that
the age of historic trees makes them difficult to study. “I think it’s a great thing that they’re doing…I
just don’t know how realistic it is.”
A. Joined. B. Praised. C. Charged. D. Contacted.
31. What’s Scott Merkle’s attitude to the group’s work
A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Cautious. D. Unclear.

Some girls tend to feel frustrated if they have a pear-shaped body, with hips that are wider than
the bust (胸部) and shoulders. While pear-shaped people’s waists are typically smaller, they may have
more fat on their hips and legs. As a result, many pear-shaped girls try to hide their hips and legs
under large dresses and pants.
However, a recent study suggested that pear-shaped people are the ones who won the genetic
lottery!
A study published in September by the US National Library of Medicine found that the waist-
to-hip ratio (WHR) shows the strongest and most consistent association with mortality. Traditionally,
the body mass index (BMI) has been considered the best indicator of health. However, this study
challenges this belief. It surveyed nearly 40,000 people and found that, regardless of BMI, WHR is
positively correlated with all-cause mortality (all of the deaths that occur in a population no matter
the cause). The larger the WHR, the higher the all-cause mortality rate will be. Instead of focusing on
how much fat a person has, scientists involved in this study suggest people should focus more on how
fat is distributed in a person’s body.
WHR, as its name suggests, compares your waist measurement to your hip measurement. A
larger waistline means more central fat, which could indicate more visceral fat (内脏脂肪), also
known as toxic fat. Harvard Medical School states that more visceral fat increases the risk of illnesses
including diabetes, heart diseases and asthma. That’s why people with a pear-shaped body tend to be
healthier than others. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy WHR is less
than 0.85 for women and less than 0.9 for men.
It is impossible to specifically target waist fat when people try to lose weight. But losing overall
fat will make the waist smaller. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University suggested we eat less
carbohydrates and more food higher in fiber and protein. Moreover, doing strength training helps
build more muscle, which makes you burn more calories even when you’re resting.

Despite being found in
distant corners of the world, we’re a tight-knit family that makes an effort to stay close and keep in
touch. New Year has always been a special time for us and a chance for us all to come together, no
matter where in the world we might be.
My aunt Samantha, known affectionately by everyone in the family as Mantha, loved New Year
and always went out of her way to make it cosy and magical for everyone around her. Mantha was
kind, fun and full of energy so it wasn’t hard to get into the New Year spirit when she was around.
This year was no exception. Mantha drove three hours from her house in Bournemouth to visit
everyone two weeks before New Year and to drop off presents to her friends still in the area. We
chatted merrily about our plans, laughed at how organized Mantha was — presents already bought
and wrapped and the freezer full ahead of the big day — and kissed goodbye when it was time to
leave. So just several days before New Year, when Mantha’s son called us saying Samantha had
passed away suddenly at home, none of us could quite believe it. I’d only been messaging her the day
before, sharing voice notes like we always liked to do.
Mantha had had a blood clot (血块) that had unfortunately travelled to her lung and despite the
paramedic’s best efforts, they were unable to save my beloved, fun, wonderful aunt.
So close to New Year, none of us felt like celebrating and we decided we’d have a quiet day at
home, surrounded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law, Vera, told us about some
colleagues of hers who’d just arrived in the UK far away from friends and family. And they were
eager to experience a proper English New Year.
