“ My mom is the only one who still writes me letters,” the actor Steve Carell said, feeling sad how rare hand- written letters have become in our tech- heavy times. He added,“ There's something fundamental about opening a letter——I see her on the page. I see her in her handwriting.”
This comment really resonated (共鸣) for me recently when I got my 10- year- old son a workbook to show him how to write in cursive (草书). He isn't learning it in school. And it's summer vacation so I felt an open window to introduce him to this important skill.
Doing a few pages in the workbook-- tracing the letters and short words that are outlined with dotted lines—— has become a relaxing activity for him. I can see his shoulders lowering and his breathing slowing as he traces the cursive letters, especially after hours in front of his screen and keyboard. The script workbook isn't . his independent handwriting like Steve Carell's mother's letters. But it reflects his effort, his attention and the pleasurable result of his sharp pencil against a smooth piece of paper.
The joy of learning new ways to write is only one of its benefits. Hand- written notes also activate the hand- brain connection in ways that researchers have found improves information processing and focus. So it is recommended to harness the power of handwriting when learning is the goal.
There's also the emotional benefit of receiving a hand- written letter. The hand- penned notes are the ones we tend to keep, collecting them in a special box or folder to pull out when we need a visit with the person whose words are recorded on the page.
Finally, there's the sensory experience that only a pen and paper can provide. Sure, the tapping and clicking of a keyboard stimulate our senses, but there's real joy to be found in the scent of a freshly- sharpened pencil, the sound of a piece of paper against the table, the feel of a pen in your hand and the sight of your thoughts appearing vividly on the page, letter by letter, as if directed by your brain.
24. What does Steve Carell think of hand- written letters
A. They are a symbol of culture. B. They are deserving and valuable.
C. They are outdated and unnecessary. D. They are more interesting than emails.
25. How does the author's son feel when tracing letters in the workbook
A. Bored and frustrated. B. Nervous and tired.
C. Excited and confident. D. Relaxed and focused.
26. What does the underlined word“ harness” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Employ. B. Anticipate. C. Restrict. D. Consult.
27. What is the best title of the text
A. The Challenges of Practicing Cursive Writing.
B. Which Is Better: Hand- written Letter or Email
C. Why Is Writing by Hand Beneficial to Children
D. The Unexpected Pleasure of Writing a Note by Hand

For shelter dogs, awaiting adoption can be stressful. Roughly 4.1 million dogs enter animal shelters in the United' States every single year. Dogs housed in shelters can face great stress due to noise and limited spaces, which can reduce their overall well- being and impact their adoptability. A study published in the journal PLOS ONE found that dogs kept together with companions showed fewer signs of stress and were even adopted more quickly.
“ Despite being a social species, dogs are often housed alone in shelters to reduce disease transmission and possible injury from inter- dog conflicts. But this practice can work against dogs' behavioral health and adoptability,” study co- author and Virginia Tech University animal behavior psychologist Eric a Feuerbacher said in a statement.“ We wanted to examine whether pair housing could be a useful intervention for improving shelter dogs' welfare.”
Prior studies have suggested that co- housing can produce behavioral and physiological benefits. These studies have typically focused on laboratory dogs or dogs housed for more than six months at veterinary (兽医的) schools. However, those results might not necessarily apply to shelter dogs, many of which have shorter lengths of stay than those dogs studied. This study is the first to examine how U. S.- based shelter dogs perform in co- housing vs. single- housing.
This new study followed 61 dogs, most of which had recently entered the Humane Society of Western Montana. The team placed half of the dogs in co- housing with partners who were put together after a compatibility (兼容) test. The other half were housed alone.
They observed the dogs over a week, recording common stress behaviors. These include lip- licking and pulling back their ears. The team also took daily samples of the dogs’ urinary cortisol (尿皮质醇) to measure for biological indicators of stress.
The dogs that were housed with a companion showed fewer stress behaviors. They were also adopted four days sooner than the single- housed dogs on average.“ Many potential adopters might already have a dog,” Feuerbacher said.“ Clearly exhibiting that a dog can successfully interact with other dogs might highlight those dogs as good matches-- leading to more successful adoptions.”
28. What is the aim of their study according to Erica Feuerbacher
A. To test the effect of. pair housing on shelter dogs.
B. To reveal the situation of dogs in animal shelters.
C. To investigate the impact of stress on dogs' health.
D. To identify the reasons for dogs' stress in shelters.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The limitations of housing dogs alone.
B. The benefits of co- housing dogs in the lab.
C. The achievement of previous related studies.
D. The necessity of conducting the new study.
30. How did the researchers measure stress levels of the dogs
A. By changing the dogs' shelters. B. By performing a compatibility test.
C. By analyzing their biological samples. D. By recording the frequency of their conflicts.
31. According to the study, why did the co- housed dogs get adopted faster
A. They had shorter stay length in the shelter.
B. They interacted better with their partners.
C. They seemed to be loyal to the new adopters.
D. They exhibited greater ability to live alone.

Light is a vital part of life and without it plants would not grow or produce oxygen that people need to breathe. But light, it turns out, does so much more. Light therapy (治疗) appears to improve healing in the brains of people who suffered significant brain injuries, according to a study published in Radiology.
This recent study is one of the more influential studies that have been done in the light therapy field. It was a double- blind study. Neither the participants nor the researchers were aware of who received the treatment and who received a placebo (安慰剂).
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) gathered 38 patients who had suffered moderate brain injuries. 17 of the patients received light therapy through a helm et (头盔) that gives off near- infrared light within 72 hours of their injury, while 21 of the patients wore the helmet without any light being given off.
The researchers then used medical images to view the patients' brain in its resting state. What they found is that the patients who received the treatment had more changes in their brain connectivity. The regions in their brains that showed more connectivity included ones related to sensory processing, cognitive function, and motor control.
All of this seems like very good news. And yet, strangely enough, the researchers found that the light treatment had no long- term effect on the patients.“ We were unable to detect differences in connectivity between the two treatment groups in the long term, so although the treatment appears to increase the brain connectivity initially, its long- term effects are still to be determined,” Dr. Nathaniel Mercardo, a statistician at MGH and a co- author of the study said in the news release.
Still, as PsyPost point s out, even though the study is not 100 percent conclusive. in terms of the benefits of light therapy in the long term, it is a good start. More research obviously needs to be done to determine whether this potentially life- changing treatment can stand up well to closer inspection.
32. What do we know about the study
A. It explained the importance of light in life.
B. All participants received the same treatment.
C. It explored the potential of light therapy.
D. The researchers were familiar with the participants.
33. Which of the following indicates the possible effect of the treatment
A. The advanced medical image technology.
B. The increased connections within the brain.
C. The rare sensory processing connectivity.
D. The differences of participants’ nature.
34. Why does the author mention Dr. Nathaniel Mercardo's statement
A. To confirm the reliability of the result.
B. To comment the significance of the treatment.
C. To highlight his contribution to the statistics analysis.
D. To explain the long- term effect of the treatment is not fully known.
35. What is the author's attitude towards the study
A. Skeptical. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Subjective.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

How to make art fun for children
As with art, it all comes down to interpretation. In reality, art galleries, like the great artworks they house, can appeal to all ages. Surely they can be great fun for children if we set out with the intention of making them so. All we need is a fresh approach.
36
Who said that walking around a gallery had to be slow, stopping to look at every picture That's simply not attractive to children. Instead , let them decide on the pace. If they want to head straight for a certain display, let them. If something catches their eyes on the other side of the room, that's absolutely fine. 37
Turn art into a game.
The particular work of art is simply not important. What really matters is that children build a connection with art, for whatever reason. 38 Make simple quizzes for older children such as,“ Who can guess the artist ” or,“ Who can identify the period it was made ” Just do this with your children and you'll find it beneficial to improve their interest..
Don't spend too long in the gallery.
39 So limiting your visit to 45 minutes in the gallery is perfect for preventing boredom. With this approach , perhaps consider making a trip to an art gallery part of your day's activities rather than the main activity. You could even visit two galleries in one day, each for 30 minutes. A gallery trip, you could say!
Engage your kids in conversation about art.
Talk to children in the language of emotions as this will stimulate their interest. Ask questions such as,“ What exhibit did you find most exciting or boring ” or,“ 40 ” and discuss your different impressions of the same works. By taking this approach, art is no longer dull but something alive and relevant to young people, making it a pursuit that will last a lifetime.
A. Do slow looking in the gallery.
B. How did that painting make you feel
C. Let your children enjoy art on their own terms.
D. What did the artist attempt to say with the exhibit
E. Children naturally have shorter attention spans than adults.
F. If they keep going back to a previous room, no problem at all.
G. To encourage this, you can make it into a game, either with or without a reward.

After a busy week, Lucy and her parents planned a mountain picnic to appreciate the beauty of nature and spend some quality time together. Little did they know, their trip was going to have some surprises.
Upon reaching the mountain's foot, they came across a house where Jack and his dad were securing a boat onto their truck. Lucy, curious about the best picnic spot, approached them for advice. Jack, familiar with the mountain, recommended a spot about a two- hour hike away.“ It's truly a sight to pay attention to,” he promised.
They parked next to Jack's truck, gathered their picnic supplies, and set foot on the scenic path. Thick trees lined one side of the road, while a gentle stream flowed on the other, guiding them to an impressive grassland adorned (装饰) with bright wildflowers. There, they enjoyed their tasty sandwiches, fresh fruits, and treats, all the while sharing delightful conversation.
As they were wrapping up their meal and looking forward to a leisurely rest, dark clouds gathered overhead, signaling the approach of rain. In a hurry, they pitched the tent they had fortunately brought along. No sooner had they taken shelter than the heavens opened, and a downpour began, turning the world outside into a blurry, water y canvas (油画布). With no other option, they waited out the storm.
The rain finally stopped, and it felt as if they had been waiting for a century. Lucy and her parents quickly packed up, eager to head back. Their relief didn't last; the stream had grown into a huge, rushing flood, blocking their way. With no cell phone signal, they were cut off from the outside world. Adding to their dilemma, night was fast approaching, casting a shadow over their situation.
Despite the challenges, they gathered close together, using the tent as a temporary shelter against the approaching darkness. As they sat there, they realized that this unexpected event had brought them even closer as a family, turning a simple picnic into a memorable adventure they would never forget.

Dear Carl,
I'm glad to hear that you are going to participate in the“ Colorful High School Life in China” project. For a great scene, I strongly recommend filming our club activities. These activities are important to campus life, showing students' interests beyond their studies, from calligraphy to robotics. Moreover, they highlight personal growth and teamwork. These moments will show how we balance the heavy school work and the colorful after- class activities.
Good luck with your project. I'm sure you will provide valuable insights into our school life and win good comments. Feel free to contact me if you need any help or have any question.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
Suddenly, they heard a truck noise coming from the other side of the river. It was Jack's truck they saw as it turned the corner, and this made them feel less worried. Jack had noticed the darkness settling and Lucy's car still parked near his house. Remembering the heavy rain, he worried and set out with his father in the truck to find them. As they neared the picnic area, Jack heard cries for help and spotted Lucy and her parents signaling for help. Quickly, Jack and his father launched their boat into the water to reach out to them.
Lucy and her parents got on Jack's boat and crossed the river safely. They then rode back to the mountain's start in his truck. They were thankful to Jack and his dad for helping them in time and being kind. They said“ thank you” with tears in their eyes. This special day taught them that being kind is powerful and they should keep helping others. They also learned always to be ready when going out into nature. This mountain picnic was a day they will remember forever.

M: Hello, from which platform does the next train to Manchester depart
W: It departs from Platform 5 at 10:45 a. m. So you have about twenty minutes to spare.
Text 2
W: Did you say you took an all- expenses- paid trip to Hawaii
M: Yeah. However, my schedule was completely booked with meetings and lectures. So I didn't get enough time for sightseeing.
Text 3
W: Did you manage to locate the book required for your reading assignment at the library
M: Unfortunately, I missed it because the library had already closed. I wasn't aware it shuts its doors so early on weekends.

M: Your new necklace looks really beautiful. I'm considering getting one for my wife.
W: Thank you. It's a good choice. I got it from Magic Jewelry Store and...
M: Quiet! Our manager is approaching us with the meeting documents.

M: I've been going through a textbook on proper online behavior recently. It's being used in several schools this semester.
W: It's certainly beneficial, considering the significant impact the Internet has on students.
Text 6
W: I really appreciate you stopping to help me out, Jack.
M: It's nothing, Linda. I couldn't pass by knowing my colleague was helpless on the roadside. Now, what seems to be the problem with your car
W: Well. All the air went out of my tire, so I guess I'll have to call a breakdown truck.
M: That's not necessary if you have a spare tire and tools in your car.
W:I think I do. Let me see. Yeah, everything is good to go.
M: In that case, I can help you change it. It shouldn't take us very long.
Text 7
W: Hello. I have a reservation at your hotel. My name is Wanda Fleming.
M: Welcome to the Oasis Hotel. Let me check our database for your booking. That's odd. I don't see your name, Ms. Fleming.
W: Really I booked it on your website earlier while I was in Boston. Here's the receipt.
M: Hmm... yes, this looks accurate.
W: Then, why isn't it on record
M: Did you receive any error messages when you made the booking I really have no idea how this could have happened.
W: No, nothing like that. I'm a little worried, since the room has already been charged to my card.
M: I' ll get my manager. This is an unusual case, so she'll have to help you.

W: Good morning, Lost and Found Department at Sydney University, can I help you
M: I think my handbag is missing.
W: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. When and where did you last see it
M: At about 4 o’ clock yesterday afternoon. I grabbed a cup of coffee and stepped into the library. After downloading a science fiction in the literature section, I went back directly to my dormitory.
W: Ah, your handbag seems to be left in the library.
M: Yes, I think so.
W: What color is your handbag And the size
M: It's brown and small, and made of leather.
W: Now please scan the code here and type in your telephone number. I'll talk with the librarian and the cleaning workers to see if they have got it. If they do, I'll call you immediately.
M: Shall I write a lost and found notice
W: Sure, you can also add a photo of your handbag. Then I'll upload it to the interactive section of the campus website.
M: Thank you very much! That helps a lot.

W: Mike is here to talk to us about his amazing collection of old motorbikes. Welcome, Mike!
M: Thanks.
W: Well, Mike. You've been collecting old motorbikes for some time now, haven't you
M: Yes. I was thirteen when I got my first one. Well, in truth it was an old bike my grandfather owned and he gave it to me. I thought it was a beautiful old machine and wanted to restore it. And that was where my passion for old bikes started.
W: Obviously at thirteen you were too young to ride the bike.
M: Yes. But that didn't matter. I wanted to make the old bike look good again. To tell you the truth, I rarely ride the bikes I own.
W: And ten years on from that first bike, how many do you own now
M: Oh, well, I've got over 20 now. Some of them are very old and quite rare.
W: They must be valuable.
M: Yeah. That's irrelevant, though, because I'm not planning on selling any of them! In fact, my dad and I are thinking of opening up a small museum- type place where we can put the bikes on display. You know, some of the bikes are from overseas, so people here are unlikely to have ever seen them before.

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the Snow Center! Now, let me tell you something about the popular ski routes you can follow during your stay here.
Highland Route is directly accessible from where we are now. This route has been designed to give first- times an experience they'll enjoy regardless of their age or skill, but it's also ideal for experts to practise their techniques. Then there's Pine Route. If you' re nervous about skiing, leave this one to the experts! You follow a valley looking right down on the river below—— it's scary! But if you've fully mastered the techniques needed for hills, it's great fun. And finally, Stony Route is a good choice once you've got a general idea of the basics. There are one or two tricky sections, but nothing too challenging. There's a shelter halfway where you can sit and take a break and enjoy the afternoon sunshine. Right, so now if you'd like to follow me, we'll get started. You can go at your own speed and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
