At Cambridge, rather than choosing a hall of residence or dormitory, you live in a Cambridge College. There are 29 undergraduate Colleges. Each College has its own services, facilities and community.
Applying for accommodation
You don't need to apply for accommodation separately. If you're offered a place to study, you will automatically get a room in College accommodation for your first year.
Accommodation is guaranteed for 3 or 4 years for international students. This accommodation will be in College-owned property. Typically, you won't have to pay 12 months of rent per year. Our accommodation contracts are around 27 to 39 weeks.
Cost of accommodation
Accommodation costs vary from College to College. They also usually depend on the size of your room. Your accommodation costs will usually cover:
water, electricity and heating
cleaning
internet access
basic self-catering(自助膳食)facilities
Where you will live
During term time, you will need to live within a 3-mile radius(半径)of Cambridge city centre. You can live outside of this area if you get permission from your College or if you're studying abroad as part of your course. If you think you'll need to live outside of the 3-mile radius, you should contact a College to talk about your options before you apply.

Lindsey Stallworth, a high school student from Alabama, is on her way to a promising career in paleontology (古生物学) due to an unexpected discovery on family property. For years, she had been collecting fossils on their land in Monroe County, unaware of significant scientific value. However, her teacher at the Alabama School of Math and Science, Dr. Andrew Gentry, a paleontologist himself, took an interest when she showed him her collection.
“Upon examining the fossil shark teeth Lindsey presented, I quickly identified one and became eager to learn about its origin,” said Andrew.
Lindsey guided her teacher through the rural area where she had unearthed various relics, including shark teeth. Before long, they encountered an especially significant find on the grounds: a large bone from a 34-million-year-old whale skeleton! This led the pair to launch the huge project of uncovering the rest of the bones. After two months of hard work, they’ve managed to find the animal’s skull (颅骨).
“Assuming the entire skeleton is present, it may require several years for us to have the entire animal back in the lab,” Andrew explained.
Lindsey secured a research scholarship to persist in her fossil-digging expeditions alongside her instructor. Her enthusiasm for the project was at an all-time high, though she had never imagined a childhood pastime would lead her down this road. “We would go out and pick up shark teeth and fossil shells, but we never knew anyone that could tell us anything about them,” she recalled. “We just thought they were cool.”
“The Research Fellows Program allows Lindsey to gain real-world experience in scientific research and even present that research at professional conferences,” Andrew said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a high school student to stand out when applying to college and maybe even discover a new career path.”
4. Why was Andrew fascinated by Lindsey’s finds
A. He had a personal interest in geography.
B. He recognized the significance of one fossil.
C. He was hoping to be financially independent.
D. He wanted to start a paleontology club at school.
5. What inspired Andrew and Lindsey to start a fossil uncovering project
A. A primitive whale’s bone. B. Some fossil shells.
C. An animal’s skull. D. Some shark teeth.
6. Which of the following best describes Andrew and Lindsey’s project
A.Risky but interesting. B. Dangerous but rewarding.
C. Demanding but motivating. D. Boring but groundbreaking.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The unexpected joy of discovering fossils.
B. The additional benefits of applying to college.
C. Lindsey’s potential to become a high school teacher.
D. Lindsey’s unique opportunities for future development.
C
Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain theirmagnitudeby improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
8.Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree
A.They would like to digest what they eat.
B.They are trying to cure diseases.
C.They are attracting companions’ attention.
D.They feel like occupying the land.
9.What do researchers find through camera-traps
A.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
B.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.
C.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals
D.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.
10.What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Characteristics. B.Populations.
C.Flexibilities. D.Similarities.
11.What is the possible significance of the discovery
A.Increasing the production of resin.
B.Promoting evolution of creatures.
C.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.
D.Contributing to forest conservation.

In an era of digital technology, the art of writing by hand has slowly been downgraded to a past entertainment. However, recent research suggests that this physical act is essential to brain health and development, having multiple cognitive (认知的) benefits. It is time we should reevaluate the potential benefits it may have on our mental capacities.
According to numerous studies, writing by hand stimulates more complex and diverse brain connections essential for encoding new information and forming memories. For instance, a recent investigation found that brain connectivity patterns were far more complicated and widespread for participants who wrote by hand compared to those who typed. Thus, it is clear that handwriting has a distinct and significant impact on our brain health.
Handwriting isn’t just good for our brains health—it also has clear, practical benefits. Research has shown that students who take handwritten notes score significantly higher on quizzes, demonstrating improved learning. This extends beyond the classroom too. People who recorded information on paper calendars demonstrated more brain activity and recalled information faster than those who used smartphones. The act of handwriting, therefore, could be a valuable tool for students preparing for exams and adults managing daily tasks.
Despite its clear benefits, handwriting has been on the decline. However, 25states in the US have reintroduced writing back into school curriculums. This is a step in the right direction, as previous research has also indicated that handwriting is essential in children’s brain development. Preliterate (未识字的) children who wrote by hand demonstrated brain activity in a circuit of the brain used in learning to read, further strengthening the link between handwriting and cognitive development.
It is clear that handwriting is a valuable activity that has the potential to enhance our brain health, learning, memory, and problem-solving skills. As we continue to navigate the digital age, it is important not to overlook the value of this seemingly simple activity. So, the next time you reach for your keyboard, remember the benefits of picking up a pen instead.
12.What do people usually think of handwriting at present
A.It has become an old-fashioned skill. B.It has many cognitive benefits in life.
C.It has been replaced by digital devices. D.It has been a popular entertainment.
13.What does the author mainly show about handwriting in paragraph 3
A.It is beneficial to brain health. B.It helps students score higher on quizzes.
C.It stimulates diverse brain connection. D.It has good effects on learning and memory.
14.Why is previous research mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To make a comparison. B.To add further evidence.
C.To show different opinions. D.To explain the brain activity.
15.What’s the purpose of the passage
A.To illustrate a finding on handwriting. B.To emphasize the importance of handwriting.
C.To show the wide application of handwriting. D.To introduce the artistic value of handwriting.

Exercise needs differ from person to person due to a number of reasons. 16
Genetic(基因的)variability
Genes play a very big role in determining a person's response to exercise. 17 Some people may naturally prefer endurance activities(耐力训练), while others may have a genetic make-up that favours strength exercises. Therefore, different genes determine different reactions.
Age
18 Children and adolescents may have different needs for growth and development compared to adults or older people focusing on bone density(密度)and functional abilities. When you are at different ages, you have to choose different exercise.
Personal goals
19 Most people have their own goals when exercising and the plan they follow needs to meet those goals. Personal preferences also come into play, as some people prefer exercising in a team or class, while others prefer solo workouts.
In between exercise
Activity levels between workouts will also influence a person's exercise needs and how much they eat. If you're in an active job, for example, you might not need as much exercise as someone who often sit. Recovery is also important, as this is where the majority of your gains are made. 20
Recognizing and accepting these differences is vital for tailoring effective and sustainable exercise programmes that meet a person's needs.
A. Not everyone wants to get faster or be stronger.
B. There are various ways to meet people's needs.
C. So what are the factors that contribute to varying needs
D. Motivation and stress level also affect your recovery often.
E. Exercise requirements change over the course of a person's life.
F. Everyone has different recovery times, even after doing the same workout.
G. Gene influences factors such as muscle fiber composition and other capacities.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I sat in my parents’ car. Mom had insisted I go with her to pick up Dad from work. Across from Dad’s office is a bike store. That was the day my eleven-year-old eyes first saw the purple BMX Mongoose bike. From that day on, all I could think about was that bike. I even drew pictures of the bike in class. Every evening afterward, at five thirty, I eagerly went along with Mom to get Dad.
And every day I told my parents, “I want that bike!” But they disagreed and replied that I had already had a perfectly good bike at home. I’d argue it was old and ugly, thinking that my happiness depended on that purple bike. Days later, I found the store had sold that bike. I knew I’d never be happy again.
A week later, returning home from school, I tripped over something. Lying in the weeds near a river and some wooded lots, was a bike — the exact bike from the store. “Hey, whose bike is this ” I shouted, scanning the area. No one replied, and there was no one in sight. Maybe its owner didn’t want it any longer. I couldn’t leave it lying in the weeds. So I took it home and hid it behind the garage. Every day after school, I sat there, admiring it. But I didn’t feel like riding and didn’t feel as happy as I had thought. Thinking about the bike made my stomach tighten and uncomfortable.
A few days later, during lunch at school, my friend said, “Did you hear about Tyler, in the other fifth-grade class He lost his new purple BMX Mongoose bike he had just gotten for his birthday. He left it by a river while playing in the woods. It got dark, and he couldn’t find it.”
“I’d never go off and leave a new bike like that. He doesn’t deserve to have that bike,” I replied. My friend added, “Kids say he’s nice. And they say Tyler is upset because his dad worked overtime to buy the bike for him.” For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about Tyler.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

第二节
读后续写【参考答案】
After school, I returned home and dragged to my room. The guilt of keeping Tyler's bike hidden behind the garage weighed heavily on me. I couldn't enjoy having the bike while knowing that it rightfully belonged to someone else. I wanted to make things right. So I went to my mother and told her what had happened. My mother smiled and tapped me on the shoulder, gently saying, “I believe you have known what you should do to the bike.”
“I know Tyler’s house,” Mom said. “I’ll drive you there.” My heart raced with a mix of nervousness and determination. I walked up to knock the door. “Hey Tyler, I'm really sorry that I hid it and caused you trouble.” To my great surprise, he did not blame. What I saw was a smile slowly spread across his face. I knew exactly what that smile meant -- forgiveness for me. From that day on, the purple BMX Mongoose bike was no longer important to me. What mattered was the friendship I had formed with Tyler, which also taught me the important values like honesty.
