英语中一个元音音素可构成一个音节。一个元音音素和一个或几个辅音音素结合也可以构成一个音节。只有一个音节的单词称为单音节词；有两个音节的单词称为双音节词；有三个及三个以上音节的单词称为多音节词。
音节
take词尾的e并未发音，所以都是单音节词。
eau三个元音字母在一起，但只发一个元音，仍然算一个音节。
英语辅音音素中/l/是响音，它和辅音音素结合，也可构成音节。
单音节词：I /a hi /ha take /te k/
双音节词：pencil / pensl/ unit / ju n t
多音节词：beautiful / bju t fl/

音节按结构可以分为开音节和闭音节。
开音节是以元音字母结束的音节。
闭音节是结尾是除了r以外的辅音字母构成的音节。

开音节可分为绝对开音节和相对开音节。
(1) 绝对开音节：以发音的元音字母结束的音节。
