Until one day, someone from the Health Department came to tell us that our avocado tree was too large and needed trimming (修剪)sidewalk.Herehigh.Sobranches.Isad.The you don't clear the snow off your sidewalk. Here, it's when your trees are too high.So along came the trimmer, leaving just the trunk and a few branches.I was sad.The kids were all sad. Some friends who knew it would say, "It's going to grow back.Your next avocados will be crazy!" Yeah, whatever. The tree is gone, so stop doing that.It just didn't work.
But a few days later, I noticed some unusual butterflies flying around the yard. And then, the sun came in the kitchen, creating this pleasant warmth once blocked by the huge tree. After about a month, I started to notice some tiny green shoots coming out of the cut branches, which eventually turned into full-on bright green leaves.
I started to feel like all was going to be fine, kind of like life.Little do we know what seems really difficult is actually life's way of making us stronger. It's life's way of bringing in the butterflies, the sunshine, and the delightful flowers. We all know that saying, "It will be OK in the end.If it's not, it's not the end."
1.What is mainly conveyed in paragraph 2 about the avocado tree?
A.Her kids' love for it. B.Its fruit's good taste.

C.To show their regret. D.To express their excitement.
3.What happened to the avocado tree in the end?
A.It had no branches. B.It blocked the sunshine.
C.It was full of life again. D.It bore more avocados.
4.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

A machine can now not only beat you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate. Last week, in a public debate in San Francisco, a software program called Project Debater beat its human opponents, including Noa Ovadia, Israel's former national debating champion.
Brilliant though it is, Project Debater has some weaknesses. It takes sentences from its library of documents and prebuilt arguments and strings them together. This can lead to the kinds of errors no human would make. Such wrinkles will no doubt be ironed out, yet they also point to a fundamental problem. As Kristian Hammond, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, put it: "There's never a stage at which the system knows what it's talking about."
What Hammond is referring to is the question of meaning, and meaning is central to what distinguishes the least intelligent of humans from the most intelligent of machines. A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean. Indeed, to a computer, meaning is irrelevant. Humans, in thinking, talking, reading and writing, also work with symbols. But for humans, meaning is everything. When we communicate, we communicate meaning. What matters is not just the outside of a string of symbols, but the inside too, not just how they are arranged but what they mean.
Meaning emerges through a process of social interaction, not of computation, interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside, in society, in social memory, social conventions and social relations. It is this that distinguishes humans from machines. And that's why, however astonishing Project Debater may seem, the tradition that began with Socrates and Confucius will not end with artificial intelligence.
5.Why does the author mention Noa Ovadia in the first paragraph
A. To explain the use of a software program.
B. To show the cleverness of Project Debater.
C. To introduce the designer of Project Debater.
D. To emphasize the fairness of the competition.
6.What does the underlined word "wrinkles" in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Arguments. B. Doubts. C. Errors. D. Differences.
7.What is Project Debater unable to do according to Hammond

C. Talk fluently. D. Identify difficult words.
8.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Social interaction is key to understanding symbols.
B. The human brain has potential yet to be developed.
C. Ancient philosophers set good examples for debaters.
D. Artificial intelligence ensures humans a bright future.
二、七选五
9. The future in sci-fi movies seems so close, yet so far away. Delightfully, 5G technology makes that future look easily achievable. 一、阅读理解
Jerome Karle and Isabella Lugoski met in their first physical chemistry class at the University of Michigan in 1940. Jerome Karle was in his first year of doctoral work. Isabella Lugoski was in her last year as an undergraduate. They were laboratory partners. However, they didn't get along well at first.
Isabella Lugoski looked back on the past, “I walked into the physical chemistry laboratory and there was a young man at the desk next to mine with his equipment all set up running his experiment. I don't think I was very polite about my question. I asked him how he got there early and had everything all set up. He didn't like that. So we didn't talk to each other for a while.”
Their relationship got going as they competed for the top grade in that course and they started to build a connection because both of them were interested in chemistry. They married in 1942. By 1946, both of the Karles had earned a doctorate in physical chemistry, and after a period of time at the University of Chicago they worked on the Manhattan Project, and moved to Washington DC to join the US Naval Research Laboratory.
Each specialized in a different aspect of X-ray crystallography (晶体学): Jerome focused on developing equations(方程式) that could determine how atoms(原子) were arranged inside complex molecules(分子), while Isabella conducted practical experiments to test how well the equations worked. Working together, they created the direct method for determining molecular structures, which has allowed scientists to effectively study and copy complex organic molecules to continue further study.
Jerome Karle was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1985. Although he was disappointed that the Nobel committee had ignored Isabella's contribution to that work, she was unfazed. At that point, she had already won more awards and prize money for her experimental work than he had.
1.What did Isabella Lugoski do when she first met Jerome Karle
A.She blamed him for his being late. B.She set up all his equipment for him.
C.She asked him a question impolitely. D.She observed his experiment silently.
2.What made Jerome Karle and Isabella Lugoski become connected
A.Their common interest in chemistry. B.Their wonderful marriage since 1940.
C.Their pleasant first talk in a laboratory. D.Their successful cooperation in courses.
3.What is Paragraph 4 mainly intended to show
A.The Karles' encouraging further study. B.The Karles' good teamwork in science.
C.How the Karles worked with others. D.Why the Karles won the Nobel Prize.
4.Which of the following best explains the underlined word “unfazed” in the last paragraph
A.Generous. B.Touched. C.Shocked. D.Calm.
The average bear, it seems, is getting ever smarter. First, it turned out that at least one can use a comb. Now it appears that some can count, too.
Jennifer Vonk, from Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from Georgia State University, set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots(点) on a computer screen. In return for a food reward one bear, Brutus, would touch the more heavily dotted pattern with his nose. The others, Bella and Dusty, would touch the screen with their claws.
As the researchers report in Animal Behavior, the bears did best with patterns where the colored dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger colored area. This could be explained by the bears' distinguishing the different areas of color rather than truly counting the dots. However, the three bears managed to pick out the bigger number of dots even in pairs of patterns where fewer dots took up a larger area.
Moving patterns, where each dot followed its own path around the screen, were more of a challenge. But Brutus, at least, was not defeated. He seemed to be counting mobile dots even when the scientists tried to mislead him by moving the total colored area of the dots at the same time.
It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges when trying to get food. They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the complex social systems that contribute to animal smarts. Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends for help.
5.What task did the scientists set for the three bears
A.Distinguishing different dot patterns.
B.Figuring out different colors of dots.
C.Putting the dots into differently colored groups.
D.Picking out the group with a larger number of dots.
6.For the bears, the task was easier when _____.
A.the colored dots were moving slowly B.the dot patterns were regular in shape
C.the dots followed a path on the screen D.more dots covered a larger colored area
7.What may explain the bears' high degree of intelligence
A.They learn skills from other animals. B.They face life challenges on their own.
C.They feed on a diverse range of food. D.They have complex social networks.
8.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Bears Taught to Distinguish Colors B.New Evidence of Bear Intelligence Found
C.Three Bears Learned How to Count D.The Smartest American Black Bear Brutus
二、七选五
9.How to Succeed in Science
To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck. In my view, you have to combine intelligence with a willingness not to follow conventions when they block your forward path. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success.
①_____
That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than you. It's like playing any game. Even as a child, I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was. If you win, it gives you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isn't simply to win; it's to win at something really difficult. ②_____
Take risks.
To make a huge success, a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. ③_____ This can be more than personally upsetting.
Never do anything that bores you.
My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then leaves you alone. I'm not good enough to do well in something I dislike. ④_____
It's very hard to succeed if you don't want to be with other scientists, because you have to go to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you. And you have to chat with your competitors, even if you find them objectionable. So my final rule is: ⑤_____
A.Meet challenges with great courage.
B.If you can't stand being with your real peers, get out of science.
C.Put another way, it's to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top.
D.Make sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess.
E.Avoid foolish people.
F.In fact, I find it hard to do well in something I like.
G.Besides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes.

一、阅读理解
In a box stands a baby black-tailed godwit (黑尾塍鹬), which is only few days old, and in a few weeks this bird will set off on an extraordinary journey. First, it will be carefully loaded into the back of a truck with nine other young godwits and driven 1 ,000 kilometers east to Poland. From there, it will join the local black-tailed godwits on a vast migration (迁徙),traveling 3,600 kilometers south to sub-Saharan Africa.
In the process, this little bird will help answer a question that has been troubling shorebird biologist Theunis Piersma for more than 30 years: Were godwits born to know their migration routes programmed into their genes (基因), or do they learn them from other birds
Piersma and his co-workers raised dozens of wild black-tailed godwits they collected from nests in the north of Netherlands. They equipped the birds with tiny devices and freed them to migrate. Half were let go from their home; the others were trucked to Poland. Every 36 hours, the birds' solar-powered devices reported on their locations to passing satellites—and on to the biologists' computers.
Throughout 2015 and 2016, the scientists tracked 80 godwits, and all but one of the birds trucked to Poland assumed the Polish birds' route. By tracking the birds' progress, Piersma proved his idea that social learning, not genes, is driving the godwits' migration.
Though how the birds are learning from each other remains unclear, Piersma thinks the godwits are not simply following the crowd. Instead, he believes they are somehow sharing information of their route with each other before they leave.
Piersma believes that the key point of this work— that scientists have been overvaluing the contributions of genes to bird migration— can extend beyond shorebirds to other groups, such as songbirds, whose migration routes are seemingly related to their genes.
In a changing world, Piersma believes godwits' ability to learn new migration routes may make them more adaptable.
1.What was the baby bird used to do
A. Add to the diversity of the local species.
B. Explore the main reason for birds' migration.
C. Test birds' ability to adapt to the new surroundings.
D. Find out the key factor in the selection of migration routes.
2.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word "assumed" in Paragraph 4
A. Guessed. B. Changed. C. Adopted. D. Avoided.
3.Why did Piersma mention songbirds
A. To show the conclusion of the study is reliable.
B. To point out the contributions of genes are great.
C. To stress scientific discoveries apply universally.
D. To prove shorebirds have similar genes to songbirds.
4.What is mainly talked about in the text
A. Birds differ from one another
.B. Birds migrate along the same route.
C. Genes play a great part in birds' migration.
D. Birds can learn from each other when migrating.
The top-selling album Songs of the Humpback Whale was released in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales and eventually helped save thousands of whales' lives.
The album might never have been made if it hadn't been for a US Navy engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1950s, Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange, deep sounds, which he realized were coming from whales.
Watlington played the recordings for a pair of biologists named Roger Payne and Katy Payne. When they listened, they were instantly fascinated by the beauty of the whales' voices.
Katy Payne studied music as well as biology, and she was amazed by how the whales communicated like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting detail: They had recognizable patterns. In biological terms, an animal call with a repeating pattern is called a song. The songs of whales are so complex that some scientists have even compared whales to composers and poets.
The Paynes thought that other people needed to hear the beauty of the whales' songs, so Roger organized the recordings into an album. At the time when the album came out, whales were often hunted and traded for money and some whale species were dying out. Most people had never thought of whales as creatures that could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album, many people began to think differently. The album led people to start the Save the Whales movement. Musicians began using whale songs in their music, and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1986, the deep-sea whaling was banned.
It might seem incredible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this one-of-a-kind album revealed secrets long hidden beneath the waves and allowed these mamazing creatures to finally share their songs with the human world.

9. As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I'm often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I’ve put together some good tips for starting an art journey.
Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. ①_______You'll want to look back on your journey to see how far you've come.
Paint often and paint from life. There's no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. ②_______
Continually challenge yourself to try something new. ③_______Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club; we've all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
④_______Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you're on won't follow a straight path. ⑤_______Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A. Get out of your comfort zone.
B. Make career plans and set goals.
C. Don't throw away your beginner art.
D. Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.
E. You'll hit roadblocks, and you'll feel discouraged at times.
F. Evaluate your performance and, if needed, redefine your role.
G. You'll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition.
10.One Second Every Day
I've been in advertising for eight years and used to work a lot of late nights and weekends for numerous projects.①________One day I watched a talk called "The power of time off". It's about how every seven years, the speaker takes a year off work to do his own creative projects. ②________I decided 1 had to do that. I needed to take time to start my own creative ideas.
The first project ends up being something I call "One Second Every Day". Basically I record one second of every day for the rest of my life, combining these moments into one single continuous video until I can't record them anymore. ③________There are many things I have no recollection(记忆) of unless someone brings them up, and I think, "Oh, those are the things I did. "
④________On a good day, I’ll have maybe four seconds I want to choose. I’ll just have to narrow them down to one, but even narrowing them down to that one allows me to remember the other three anyway.
I don't use any filters (滤镜), just trying to catch the moment as much as possible as it is. I started a rule of the first person view. Early on, I thought I should have a couple of videos where people would see me, but I realized that wasn't the way to go. ⑤________.
The project has many possibilities. I encourage you all to record just a small piece of your life everyday, so you can never forget that day and treasure every moment.
A. It instantly inspired me.
B. The purpose is to remember what I've done.
C. I'm always energetic when doing things I love.
D. People might have different interpretations of it.
E. It's difficult, sometimes, to pick that one second.
F. But I never had time for one I wanted to work on on my own.
G. The essence of my project should be recording the thing as I actually see it.

N.Y.ust two months before his senior year in high school, Foster Andersen was riding a motorcycle in his hometown of Henrietta, N.Y. when he crashed. The accident left him in a coma. He remained in a hospital for seven months.
In the nearly 40 years that have followed , Andersen has to use a wheelchair. He can write when a pen is intertwined(使缠绕) in his fingers, but he needs an assistant to help him with everyday needs. However, a quick survey of his achievements reveals not one, but two college degrees and a huge network of people who call him a friend. And probably the best example of Andersen's spirit is his nonprofit group Shared Adventures. Last summer the organization celebrated 28 years of bringing recreational and social activities to people with disabilities.
"It's founded on the belief that recreation, fun, challenge and opportunity for the outdoors are necessary parts of a healthy life," Andersen said." We are the only year-round program that offers such a wide range of activities to people with physical challenges and special needs.
The most well-known event is called Day on the Beach. Day on the Beach is the highlight of each year, when more than 300 people with special needs, over 400 family members and friends, and over 250 enthusiastic volunteers team up to share a full day of adaptive sports.
Wendy Bell, a disabled yoga teacher and Day on the Beach participant, said the event is the best example of the great experience the organization offers. People who don't feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others. However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their body language conveys a positive message. Practice these gestures and movements to project your self-confidence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention, while maintaining distance indicates that you are disinterested. Research suggests that nonverbal signals such as leaning forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of interest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious. Everything from hand gestures to your walking pace can make a difference; slow down and notice how you feel more confident when you take your time.
The key, however, is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while you are moving more slowly. Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and poor posture may cause people to see you less confident.
Keep Your Chin Up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking Instead, keeping your head up and facing your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel unnatural initially, but you will eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence, so offer a firm hand when you are meeting others. How long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or less. Handshakes lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of the interaction and more anxiety.

Bush tried to signal a peace sign by waving the two fingers or V-sign at the crowd. ③________But he committed a major error. Instead of his palm (手掌) facing outwards, it faced inwards. ④________Therefore, it's important to understand the meaning of gestures before you communicate with people indifferent cultures.

9. Much of the work in today's world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. ①_________ Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent
②_________ They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team's performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn't evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team's performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ③_________ In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team's performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, "There is no I in TEAM." ④_________
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
⑤_________ An A-team may require a balance—not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.
A. It's not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.
B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent.
C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers' attention.
D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.

一、阅读理解
For the growing number of Chinese heading west to work and study, there's plenty they find surprising. Upon arrival in the West, many Chinese find they have to firstly put on the brakes. Li Feng, raised in northern China and now based in England, agrees. "The only thing Chinese people would be shocked by in Britain is how long it takes to do things," he says. "For instance, in China if you want to open a bank account, you don't wait, you just do it at the counter." Out-of-hours and weekend work is standard in China, but in Britain, the weekend is for family and friends.
Jack Chen, who left his homeland 12 years ago and is now a lawyer in Belgium says office politics are simpler in Europe, partly because the hierarchy (等级制度) is less rigid than in China, where the boss really is the boss and social class in the office is very obvious and important. As a result, staff in a Chinese company think very carefully about how to present their views and ideas. Employees in the West can share their opinions more freely. In China you should have the wisdom to say something in an appropriate way. But in Europe you can just say what you want.

While a record number of 523,700 students left China to study elsewhere in 2015, roughly 70%—80% of the students abroad have been returning in recent years because of the attractive job market at home, according to the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. 一、阅读理解
A new kind of hybrid wheat now available to American farmers may help reduce fears over genetically engineered crops. The new hybrid wheat is being introduced as seed companies world wide seek to increase production because of reducing grain supplies. The hybrid wheat was developed by a Chinese-owned agriculture company. The product was created without genetic engineering. The first seeds to grow the wheat will be released on 2,000 to 2,800 hectares of American farmland next year, according to a news agency .
Developers or breeders create hybrid wheat by taking away the natural ability of plants to pollinate themselves. Instead, female wheat plants in a field are pollinated by male plants of a different line. The goal of the process is to create seeds that can produce bigger crops and better resist harmful environments. The fertilized female plants produce a new kind of hybrid. Using this hybrid technology permits breeders to choose the best elements from two parent seeds to produce new seeds containing the best characteristics of both.
Producers say when seed companies produce hybrid wheat seeds, some female plants often fail to become fertilized because they depend on unpredictable winds to carry pollen (花粉). Pollen is a substance produced by plants when they reproduce. During some seasons, pollen is released into the air and carried to other plants to be fertilized. Producers say the fertilization of each plant is more certain during wheat's natural process of self-pollination.
Researchers say the new hybrid wheat has to take long to come onto the market because the development process is costly and complex. It could be important in increasing wheat yields and avoiding being linked to GMO development. GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Genetically modified wheat has never been grown for industrial purposes because of fears that allergens(过敏原) or poisons might be created. Wheat is used to make numerous major foods worldwide.
Dave Hankey owns a seed company in Park River, North Dakota. He said, "Because of the resistance to genetically modified stuff, the hybrid wheat would be considered better and safer. " He added it would certainly be the public view.
1.Which of the following causes the new hybrid wheat to be developed
A. The existing unsafe grain.
B. The decreasing output of food.
C. The application from American farmers.
D. The Chinese agriculture company's proposal.
2.What is expected of the seeds of the new hybrid wheat
A. Requiring less fertilizer.
B. Producing tinier crops.
C. Having better adaptability.
D. Improving their natural self-pollination ability.
3.What can we infer about the development of the new hybrid wheat
A. It is temporary B. It is demanding.
C. It is simple and fruitful. D. It is complex but economical.
4.What would be the public attitude to the hybrid wheat according to Dave Hankey
A. Indifferent. B. Resistant. C. Appreciative. D. Cautious.
The first great agricultural revolution happened about 12,000 years ago, when humans settled on farms. The second, also recognized as the British Agricultural Revolution, took place first in England in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The third was the "green revolution" beginning in the mid-20thcentury, in which advances in fertilization, mechanization, and irrigation dramatically increased global food production. The fourth is likely to come from informatization, as digital technology and big data help farmers make better decisions and step up crop production.
Michael Stern, president and chief executive officer of the Climate Corporation, said that the ability to gather detailed information about farmers' fields, combined with advances in weather forecasts, computing power, and artificial intelligence, will change farming from a business that often reacts to the past to one that uses real-time data and weather forecasts to make more accurate decisions for the season to come.
Over the course of a growing season, farmers make 40 to 50 key decisions that affect сгор performance. Recent trends that have swept other areas of society—such as cheap data storage and dramatic increases in computing power—have the potential to change the farm.
Stern offered the example of a farmer who delayed the regular fall fertilization of his fields after being informed of a coming storm. That decision reduced fertilizer runoff, kept fertilizer on the fields, and helped control the farmer's costs. As data is gathered season after season, computer models will help farmers optimize production
Remote sensing (遥感) is another way that modern technology can help farmers know what's going on in their fields. Many farmers drive around to monitor growth and watch for pests and diseases. But these surveys are typically random and don't cover more than 2 percent of a field. Remote sensing can provide accurate data that covers an entire field and provide specific recommendations based on the situation in the stricken area.
5.What may the fourth agricultural revolution help farmers do in the future
A. Deal with big data.
B. Grasp the computing ability.
C. Make reasonable decisions.
D. Develop business potentials.
6.Why did the author give an example in Paragraph 4 according to the text
A. To confirm the coming of a storm.
B. To explain the reason of fertilizer runoff.
C. To stress the importance of fertilization.
D. To show the use of computer models.
7.What is the author's attitude to the coming agricultural revolution
A. Opposed. B. Objective. C. Positive. D. Unclear.

8. In 2019,Gotham Greens opened its 9,300-square-metreBaltimore farm on the former site of Bethlehem Steel, which once was the largest steel-manufacturing plant in the world.①_______It aimed to repurpose unused rooftop spaces and abandoned factories for food production.
Urban populations are projected to increase by 2.5 billion by 2050. ②_______But despite the rise in city-based farms, there's still a lot we don't know about them, including the economic and environmental costs.
Florian Payen, an environmental scientist, and his colleagues looked at previous studies done in 53countries where crops were grown in different urban environments, including "grey" spaces such as rooftops, and by using different growing methods. They found that yields of urban crops were often the same as those from conventional farms. Just as importantly, they revealed the types of crops most commonly grown and the most effective growing methods. ③_______
It's known that one of the benefits of urban farming is a reduction in food miles. ④_______In one study, researchers analyzed the carbon footprint of different vegetables grown in greenhouses in Canada and that of the imported vegetables from the USA. They found that it was less carbon-intensive to import the crops because of the high energy input required to grow them locally in greenhouses," says Payen.
⑤_______Urban agriculture has the potential to enhance local ecosystems, attracting pollinators such as bees and birds that boost urban biodiversity while providing more green spaces to help keep cities cool and counter(抵消) the urban heat island effect.

一、阅读理解
There are loads of studies that show that spending time in nature is good for your health and well-being. But not everyone lives near a park. And not everyone can easily get outdoors. So, what happens when you bring nature into your home via TV Anew study finds that a virtual nature experience can have some of the same effects.
The researchers wanted to see if the same positive impacts of being out in nature would translate into experiencing nature virtually, the study co-author Alex Smalley, a PhD student and researcher on the Virtual Nature project in the UK, tells Treehugger. We were particularly interested in relieving boredom because it's a negative state commonly experienced by older people in care homes," he says.
For the study, researchers brought 96 adults into a lab and caused boredom by having them watch a four-minute video of a man discussing his work at an office supply company. In a monotone(单调的) voice, the man described a conversation with a client, eating lunch at his desk, and how they determined the prices of products. Then, the study participants experienced an underwater coral reef scene from the BBC's Blue Planet Ⅱ series. They either watched it on TV, watched with a virtual reality headset using 360-degree video, or watched with a virtual reality headset using computer-generated interactive pictures.
Researchers found that all three methods minimized negative feelings like sadness and significantly lowered boredom. The interactive virtual reality experience actually increased positive feelings, such as happiness, and strengthened the connections people said they had to nature.
"I think we were most surprised that just watching nature on TV led to positive changes across each of our measures, suggesting that even short, five-minute bursts of watching a natural history programme can have an effect on well-being," Smalley says.
Originally, the impetus behind the study was to research benefits for people who are stuck indoors, such as those in nursing homes or people recovering from illness. But there are entirely new positive results in today's world due to COVID-19. "We never imagined a pandemic would mean the results might apply to such a wide part of the global population," Smalley says. "We'd always recommend trying to get out into nature wherever possible but for those who can't, our findings suggest that digital experiences of nature could provide a short-term fix."

一、阅读理解
Many employees these days eat lunch at their desks, because it seems like a harmless way to cram more work into the day.
They might not be so casual about it if they knew the habit was helping them increase extra pounds. A study in the February issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found people who ate while distracted ate more, and felt less full after lunch than those who focused on eating.
Researchers served a nine-item lunch to 44 participants who were split into two groups. One group was asked to eat lunch while playing a computer game of solitaire(单人纸牌游戏). The second group ate lunch without distractions.
The participants who were distracted by the game felt less full after lunch, according to the study, led by Rose Cooper, a researcher from the department of experimental psychology at the University of Bristol. Even 30 minutes later, the solitaire-players gobbled down more snacks when they were offered, compared to those who had focused on eating. Worse yet, when researchers asked the participants to remember what they had eaten for lunch, those who had been playing solitaire had a much harder time remembering what they had consumed.
“The findings may help to explain the well-documented connection between sedentary (久坐不动的) screen-time activities and overweight,” the study says. In addition to crowding out physical exercise, working or playing games on a computer may also cause us to gobble down larger amounts of food without thinking about it or even remembering what we have eaten.
The findings hold true for me. If I make the mistake of putting a bag of chips or a box of crackers on my desk, I often eat all the things without even realizing it. If multitasking makes our minds wander from the tasks we think we are getting done, as we have posted in the past, then why should eating be any exception
1.How did the participants with distractions react after lunch in the experiment
A.They felt full enough. B.They consumed more snacks.
C.They did sports to lose weight. D.They forgot all about the nine items.
2.What can we learn from the text
A.Video games should be forbidden during the work hours.
B.The group focusing on eating do better work than the other.
C.Eating in the office is harmful to the work of the employees.
D.It's easier for those focusing on eating to list what they ate.
3.What may eating with distractions cause
A.Low efficiency. B.Laziness.
C.Fatness. D.Absent-mindedness.
4.What's the author's attitude towards the result of the study
A.Objective. B.Negative. C.Doubtful. D.Favorable.
If you've ever felt "butterflies in your stomach" when nervous, you're likely getting signals from an unexpected source: your "second" brain. Hidden in the walls of the digestive system, this "brain in your gut (肠道)" is revolutionising medicine's understanding of the links between digestion, mood and health. Scientists call this little brain the enteric nervous system (ENS,肠神经系统).
The ENS is two thin layers of more than 100 million nerve cells lining your gut. Unlike the big brain in your head, the ENS can't calculate or compose a love note. "Its main role is controlling digestion," explains Jay Pasricha, MD, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Neurogastroenterology. "The enteric nervous system doesn't seem capable of thought as we know it, but it communicates back and forth with our big brain. For decades, researchers and doctors thought that anxiety and depression contributed to gut problems. But our research shows that it may also be the other way around," Pasricha says.
Our two brains "talk" to each other, so treatments that help one may help the other. In a way, doctors who specialise in digestive conditions are like counsellors (顾问) looking for ways to comfort the second brain. Psychological approaches may also help to improve "communications" between the big brain and the brain in our gut.
Pasricha says the research suggests that digestive-system activity may affect thinking skills and memory, too. "This is an area that needs more research, something we hope to do here at Johns Hopkins," he says.
5.Why does the author mention “butterflies in your stomach” in Paragraph 1
A. To show the power of the ENS.
B. To prove the origin of the idiom.
C. To explain why you're very nervous.
D. To engage the readers' interest in the topic.
6.What does Pasricha's research tell us
A. The main role of the ENS has changed.
B. Depression contributes to gut problems.
C. The ENS affects what happens in the brain.
D. Gut problems are different from what they were.
7.What is the benefit of Pasricha's research
A. It helps to prevent stomach problems.
B. It leads to further brain improvement.
C. It creates new treatment opportunities.
D. It gives a guide for better communication.
8.What do we learn from the last paragraph
A. The research proves quite fruitful.
B. There is still more to learn about mind-gut links.
C. Digestive system activity has other bad influence.
D. Pasricha is determined to improve people's memory.

9.One Thing You Can Do Right Now to Help Your Heart
Many diseases and medical conditions are caused by things out of our control. Yet experts say you can control and even prevent many risk factors that increase your chances of dying.
An unhealthy lifestyle can put you at great risk of heart disease and the stroke. Poor diet and a lack of physical exercise both increase your risk of heart disease. ①_____
But there is something else you can do. And it is free and easy. Smile! Anand, a heart disease specialist at the University of Missouri, advises his patients to smile. “When we smile, the chemicals that are released are more positive.”
②_____ These prevent blood from flowing to the heart or the brain. The most common reason for these blockages is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries(动脉).
When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many natural hormones (荷尔蒙) that will increase your heart rate and blood pressure and also increase sugar in the bloodstream. When it comes to food, it's difficult to match East Asia and the Pacific region in terms of variety and tastiness. From wontons to dumplings, from spicy fish to noodle soups, the amazing food culture in East Asia and the Pacific region is a central part of life for millions of people and indeed tourists from across the world.
However, changes in diet and lifestyle in recent years have sadly destroyed traditional food cultures, and the health of millions of people. Cheap "fast food" and unhealthy snacks that are high in sugar, salt and fat are now all too common but offer little nutrition.
★A new challenge
Today, there are more than 25 million malnourished(营养不良的) children living in the region, but the picture is changing. While the number of stunted(发育不良的) children is slowly falling in many countries, overweight and obesity are growing, and at a much faster rate.
In many countries, three forms of malnutrition—under nutrition, hidden hunger and overweight—coexist. A family may have an overweight mother and a stunted child. Or a child maybe both stunted or too short and overweight. Unhealthy diets are a major cause of all forms of malnutrition.

Eating a diet high in processed food increases the risk of depression, research suggests. What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, a team from University College London found.
Data on diet among 3,500 middle-aged civil servants were compared with their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They divided the participants into two groups based on two types of diet—those who ate a diet largely based on wholefood(全天然食物), which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains and high-fat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic diseases, they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets.
Those who ate the most wholefood had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed food.
Study author Dr. Archana Singh-Manoux pointed out there was a chance that the finding could be explained by a lifestyle factor they had not accounted for.
"There was a paper showing a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is that if you live in Britain, the likelihood(可能性) of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high."
Dr. Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, "This study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health."
He added people's diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated(饱和的) fats and sugars.
4.What do we know about the participants
A.They are of different ages from young to old.
B.They have been eating a less healthy diet these years.
C.Most of them prefer wholefood to processed food.
D.Those who ate wholefood generally were happier in the long term.
5.What can we learn from what Dr. Archana Singh-Manoux said
A.It is difficult for most British people to have a Mediterranean diet.
B.The Mediterranean diet is the healthiest in the world.
C.Many studies on the Mediterranean diet have been done before.
D.The Mediterranean diet is not good for depression.
6.What does Dr. Andrew McCulloch agree
A.Our diets are closely related to our mental health.
B.The present study needs more facts and other information.
C.The UK population will become ill in the near future.
D.More saturated fats and sugars should be taken in.
7.What's the text mainly about
A.The increasingly unhealthy diet of the UK population.
B.The link between processed food and depression.
C.The relationship between physical and mental health.
D.A healthy diet largely based on wholefood.

8.Ways to have a warm autumn
"Though people have been connecting autumn with misery and loneliness since ancient times, I believe the season is better than spring," Liu Yuxi, a renowned poet from the Tang Dynasty, wrote in his poem. ①_____ Here are some ideal ways.
Have a bowl of pear soup.
With a sweet scent(香味) and honey color, pear soup is the most suitable soup for autumn, which could nourish your body and reduce the dryness in the season. Cut some pears and apples, and boil them with dates, wolfberries and hawthorns in water for about an hour. Add some honey if you want it sweeter. Enjoy!
②_____
As two flowers that blossom in autumn, rather than spring, the chrysanthemum and osmanthus are popular not only for their colors and shapes, but also for the drink made from them. Just a sip, and you can taste the beauty of autumn from the tea.
Eat "white-colored" food.
Traditional Chinese culture always believes that human beings should respect nature and act according to natural changes. Food, drink and even color of clothes should vary with the change of seasons. ③_____ Such series include pears, white turnips, white fungi, Chinese yam and oats.
Wear qiuku.
Qiuku has become a humorous topic among young Chinese people. ④_____ In many youngsters' mind, qiuku is a synonym of "weak", "old" and "ugly". Yet, your bare legs, shaking on a cold autumn morning, could become a reason for getting an illness. Have mercy on them and have a pair of qiuku to be strong before being stylish.
Be healthy from the bottom of your feet.
In the traditional Chinese medical theory, feet are connected with the health of each organ. ⑤_____ Through massaging(按摩) the acupoints on feet, many illnesses could be cured.
Another convenient way is to use Chinese medical foot patches(足贴).
A.Drink some scented tea.
B.Smell some beneficial flowers.
C.White colours usually keep you from getting dry.

Boil vegetables and meats without using any oils or fats. ②_____ It's not only healthier than using lots of fats, but also it keeps the nutrients of the foods. All you need to boil food is a large pot, water, and a little bit of salt. Carrots, cabbages, potatoes, chicken and beef are just a few choices for food you can boil.
Steam vegetables and fish to keep all the nutrients unbroken. You can place a steaming basket over a pot of boiling water and place them in the steamer basket to contain all the juices. Simply bring a pot of water to the boil. ③_____ Add your food to the basket. Add some salt or lemon juice to your steamed vegetables or fish for some extra flavor.
④_____ Barbecue is great from a certain point of view because it makes your meat soft and tasty while also letting the fat drip away from it, which is healthier for you. It also passes on a nice flavor to meats and vegetables. You can roast steak and chicken, as well as vegetables, like potatoes, peppers, onions, and even lettuce.
Try eating raw foods to avoid losing any nutrients through cooking. Focus on eating uncooked foods. ⑤_____ Eating only raw foods isn't recommended for children or women who are pregnant.

He decided to hang around for a few weeks in the hope that it would reopen. He considered some of the emergency evacuation flights back home to America, but found them to be very expensive. Days turned into weeks, then months, and still Kata waited.
He made the best of his time. He rented a small apartment in the town and passed the time taking daily yoga classes, teaching local children how to box, and studying for various fitness and sports nutrition certification exams. He was working towards his goal of opening his own gym back home in America.
Finally, after earning the nickname "the last tourist in Peru, Kata's patience paid off. On October 11, he derived special access to Machu Picchu and was allowed to enter the ancient site with the country's culture minister and a bunch of guides.
It's an example of slow travel-travel so slow, in fact, that Kata didn't even go anywhere except to the village at the foot of the Andes Mountains. Rather than rushing off on an emergency flight, Kata accepted that sudden slow pace of life and made the best of it, simply fitting in with the local community and putting in time. We all know that a healthy life means getting both plenty of exercise and enough good-quality sleep, but reality often gets in the way. The new research indicates that doing enough exercise could make up for some of the unhealthy impacts of bad sleep. While the health benefits of exercise and sleep are nothing new, it's the relationship between them that is interesting in this particular study—it could even give doctors another option to deal with patients' sleep problems.
"We found those who both had the poorest sleep quality and exercised the least were most at risk of death from heart disease, the stroke, and cancer," says epidemiologist Bo-Huei Huang, from the University of Sydney in Australia.
Participants were grouped into three levels of physical activity (high, medium or low) and were also given a sleep quality score from 0-5 based on the amount of shut-eye they got, how late they stayed up, insomnia, snoring and daytime sleepiness.
Those with the highest risk of dying from cancer or heart disease during the study period were those with the worst quality sleep and who didn't meet the exercise guidelines recommended by WHO. That risk went down for people with poor sleep quality but who did meet the exercise guidelines.
In the case of all forms of cancer, for example, those at the unhealthiest end of the sleep and exercise scale had a 45 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those with good sleep scores who kept physically active. However, that risk just about disappeared for those who didn't score well on sleep but did score well on physical activity.
For now, it's not clear why more exercise might make up for poor sleep, as far as our health goes. It could be that the increased activity is counteracting inflammation(炎症), or reducing irregularities in glucose metabolism, suggest the researchers.
"Considering that physical activity is perhaps more modifiable than sleep, our study offers people more health incentives to be physically active," says population health researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis, from the University of Sydney.
4.This research is of particular interest in that _____.
A.it's in this study that exercise is known to be beneficial to sleep
B.this study offers people more health treatments to be physically active
C.it could enable doctors to cure patients of their sleeping condition
D.the relationship between exercise and sleep is updated in this study
5.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A.Those who had the poorest sleep quality were most at risk of death from heart disease.
B.Those scoring lowest on sleep and exercise scale were more likely to die from cancer.
C.There's no risk of cancer for those who didn't sleep well but did score well on physical activity.
D.It's evident that in terms of health why more exercise could make up for poor sleep.
6.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 6 mean
A.Promoting. B.Increasing. C.Preventing. D.Causing.
7.Where can this passage most probably be taken from
A.A research findings report. B.A medical examination report.
C.A report on sleep quality. D.A report on physical activity.

一、阅读理解
Leslie Nielsen's childhood was a difficult one, but he had one particular shining star in his life—his uncle, who was a well-known actor. The admiration and respect his uncle earned inspired Nielsen to make a career(职业) in acting. Even though he often felt he would be discovered to be a no-talent, he moved forward, gaining a scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse and making his first television appearance a few years later in 1948. However, becoming a full-time, successful actor would still be an uphill battle for another eight years until he landed a number of film roles that finally got him noticed.
But even then, what he had wasn't quite what he wanted. Nielsen always felt he should be doing comedy but his good looks and distinguished voice kept him busy in dramatic roles. It wasn't until 1980—32 years into his career—that he landed the role it would seem he was made for in Airplane! That movie led him into the second half of his career where his comedic presence alone could make a movie a financial success even when movie reviewers would not rate it highly.
Did Nielsen then feel content in his career Yes and no. He was thrilled to be doing the comedy that he always felt he should do, but even during his last few years, he always had a sense of curiosity, wandering what new role or challenge might be just around the corner. He never stopped working, never retired.
Leslie Nielsen's devotion to acting is wonderfully inspiring. He built a hugely successful career with little more than plain old hard work and determination. He showed us that even a single desire, never given up on, can make for a remarkable life.
1.Why did Nielsen want to be an actor
A. He enjoyed watching movies. B. He was eager to earn money.

3.What does Nielsen's career story tell us
A. Art is long, life is short. B. He who laughs last laughs longest.
C. It's never too late to learn. D. Where there's a will there's a way.
PRACTITIONERS
Jacqueline Felice de Almania (c. 1322) highlights the suspicion that women practicing medicine faced. Born to a Jewish family in Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and performed surgery. In 1322 she was tried for practicing unlawfully. In spite of the court hearing testimonials(证明) of her ability as a doctor, she was banned from medicine. James Barry (Cc.1789—1865) was born Margaret Bulkley in Ireland but, dressed as a man, she was accepted by Edinburgh University to study medicine. She qualified as a surgeon in 1813, then joined the British Army, serving overseas. Barry retired in1859, having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a man.

However, Tan passed the official exam. Tan treated women from all walks of life. In 1511, Tan wrote a book, Sayings of a Female Doctor, describing her life as a physician. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831—1895) worked as a nurse for eight years before studying in medical college in Boston in 1860. It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy softball team were waiting for their next turns at bat during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor Bisbee shivered(发抖) a little as she watched her teammate Paris White play. The two didn't know each other well—Taylor had just moved to town a month or so before.
Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground. "Paris's eyes rolled back," Taylor says. "She started shaking. I knew it was an emergency."
It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. At first, no one moved. The girls were in shock. Then the softball coach shouted out, "Does anyone know CPR "
CPR is a life-saving technique. To do CPR, you press on the sick person's chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen, the brain is damaged quickly.
Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn't think she knew it well enough. But when no one else came forward, Taylor ran to Paris and began doing CPR. "It was scary. I knew it was the difference between life and death," says Taylor.
Taylor's swift action helped her teammates calm down. One girl called 911. Two more ran to get the school nurse, who brought a defibrillator, an electronic device(器械) that can shock the heart back into work. Luck stayed with them: Paris's heartbeat returned.
"I know I was really lucky," Paris says now. "Most people don't survive this. My team saved my life."
Experts say Paris is right: For a sudden heart failure, the single best chance for survival is having someone nearby step in and do CPR quickly. Today, Paris is back on the softball team.
Taylor will apply to college soon. She wants to be a nurse. "I feel more confident in my actions now," Taylor says. "I know I can act under pressure in a scary situation."

一、阅读理解
Chinese people are fond of food made of flour, whether it be dumplings or flatbread. In the hands of skilled artisans (手艺人), flour is made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which bring a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called the dough figurine (面塑). Among the various art styles of dough figurines, Beijing's Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art form, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. Their delicate and lovely handicrafts(手工艺品) are storytellers of old and new Beijing. In 2008, it was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
It was created by Lang Shao'an. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished products are either put at the end of a thin stick or on a table for exhibition. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are delicate pieces of artworks for display only. For this reason, during the making process they are often mixed with additives (添加剂) to avoid breaking up, being eaten by insects or going bad. Over the course of his long career, Lang Shao'an developed a set of nimble fingers with an elegant artistic sensibility.
Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Fuwa-shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons such as figures based on Marvel Comics characters and the mythological Chinese figure Nezha with smoky make-up are resonating with young people.
Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Few young people are willing to take time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.
1.What is special about Dough Figurine Lang

D.It is popular with both tourists and the locals.
2.Why do artisans add additives to dough figurines
A.To make dough figurines taste good. B.To make colors brighter and last longer.
C.To help shape dough into various forms. D.To better preserve the finished products.
3.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.Suggestions for other folk artisans.
B.Different art styles of dough figurines.
C.Lang Jiaziyu's basic information and achievements.
D.The popularity of modern dough figurines.
4.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To appeal to people to value this folk art.
B.To tell people some information about Dough Figurine Lang.
C.To teach people ways to appreciate the handicraft.
D.To persuade people to protect the national cultural heritage.
Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object-the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history, in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists’ representations of books and reading, we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time.
In this “book of books,” artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. Adults are portrayed (描绘) alone in many settings and poses—absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect (才智), wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right. More recently, as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks—transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 2lst-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader. To serve its function, a book must be activated by a user: the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. Andin contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked, a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, “off-line” activity.
5.Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An introduction to a book. B. An essay on the art of writing.
C. A guidebook to a museum. D. A review of modern paintings.
6.What are the selected artworks about
A. Wealth and intellect. B. Home and school.
C. Books and reading. D. Work and leisure.
7.What do the underlined words “relate to” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Understand. B. Paint. C. Seize. D. Transform.
8.What does the author want to say by mentioning the e-reader
A. The printed book is not totally out of date.
B. Technology has changed the way we read.
C. Our lives in the 21st century are networked.
D. People now rarely have the patience to read.

一、阅读理解
A Fish and Wildlife Service proposal would protect the white bark pine as an endangered species. White bark pines can live for up to 1,000 years and grow at an elevation(海拔)of 12,000 feet. Environmentalists had requested the government in 1991 and again in 2008 to protect the trees. A non-native fungus (真菌) has been killing white bark pines for a century. More recently , the trees have proved vulnerable(易受攻击的) to tiny insects that have killed large areas of forest.
The white bark pines have almost disappeared in some areas, including the eastern edge of Yellowstone National Park , where they are a source of food for threatened grizzly bears. This makes the government's declaration of the Yellowstone area's grizzly bears being a restored species a lie.
After being blamed for not taking steps to protect the trees, wildlife officials in 2011 admitted that white bark pines needed protection, but they didn't act rapidly, saying other species faced more immediate threats.
A lawyer for the Natural Resources Defense Council, which made the formal request for protection in 2008, expressed his disappointment that it took so long but said the proposal was still worth celebrating.
The government's proposal described the threats to the trees as immediate and said the whitebark pines were one of many plants expected to be harmed as climate change moved faster than they could adapt. "Whitebark pines survive a high elevations already, so there is little remaining habitat in many areas for the species to move to higher elevations in response to warmer temperatures," Fish and Wildlife Service officials wrote.
Government officials are working with researchers and private groups on plans to gather seeds from trees, grow them in greenhouses and then plant them back on the landscape, according to Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Amy Nicholas. A proposal of that nationwide restoration is expected by the end of this year. "We do have options to restore this species," Nicholas said.

Finger painting is an art that most people experienced in childhood. But there are still people who know little about this art form. Finger painting is a simple activity that involves dipping(浸) fingers into paints and then using fingers to create objects and shapes on a piece of paper. All you need is a table at elbow height, a few sheets of plain paper, and a few bottles of water colors.
When engaging kids in this activity, one should provide non-toxic paints only. If not readily available in the market, non-toxic paints can be made at home easily. Preferably, the paints should also be eatable. Finger paints come in bright colors and can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Adults can save money by making their own finger paints using a mixture of cornstarch(玉米淀粉)food coloring and water.
It is a common fallacy that finger painting is for children alone; rather, it's an activity that can be enjoyed by adults in equal measure. Adults can use rubber gloves while painting to avoid dirty marks of paints on their hands. When a group of people are gathered for an exercise of finger painting, it can be a great way of creating a bond between them. Art and painting parties are a popular concept in the West. Organizations can also use finger painting as a team-building activity by making participants paint together on a large canvas (画布).
There's no limit to the expression of feelings in finger painting. All one needs to do is go all out and put all his feelings on a piece of paper by dipping his fingers into paints. While painting, one may unconsciously choose colors that reflect his emotions. For example, you may choose the color red to express your anger or green to express hope. At times you may be confused, and the painting will help you describe your confused state of mind. Once you express your emotions on paper, you are likely to feel relieved.
So what are you waiting for Plan a finger-painting session soon, and experience the joy.
