一、阅读理解
Ancient Chinese poetry was the heart and soul of ancient Chinese literature. Poems and songs have been the means of entertainment for men from the earliest times onwards. Records of ancient Chinese poetry have largely been found, from which a large amount of knowledge of ancient poetry of China can be obtained. Ancient Chinese poetry was primarily written to be chanted(吟诵) or sung.
The poetic persona(表面形象)is a feature of classical Chinese poetry. The persona appears when the poem is written from the viewpoint of some other person. Some poems are comments on the contemporary society and life. Images and symbolism are deeply associated with ancient Chinese poetry. Ancient Chinese poems, although apparently simple in the first reading, have deeper and greater meanings when read intensively.
The earliest ancient Chinese poetry begins with The Book of Songs which is a collection of 305poems. It is the first comprehensive compilation(合集) of ancient Chinese poems. Each poem in The Book of Songs was set to music and could be sung. Folk songs make up the most part of the book. Confucius, the great ancient philosopher, was fond of this book. It is also the accepted textbook of the Confucian school.
The history of Chinese poetry is extremely long and colorful. The Tang Dynasty, the golden age of ancient Chinese poetry, produced many famous poems. Three Hundred Poems of the Tang Dynasty, was compiled(编纂) by Heng Tang Tui Shi of the Qing Dynasty. This has been used for very many years to teach primary students.
Almost everything is the subject of ancient Chinese poetry, including marriage, agriculture, courtship(求爱), sorrows and joys, romance, heroic deeds and so on. Generally, each poem is usually composed of lines of four, five or seven syllables. Translations of ancient Chinese poems are available in books and also online. Poetry is one of mankind's oldest art forms. Since first analyzed by Aristotle, poetry has been part of every major art movement, and some say it captures emotions better than any other forms. Reading poetry is necessary to gain a full understanding of the world and has many additional benefits.
The immediate benefits of reading poetry are improvements on vocabulary. Poetry makes the reader familiar with new terms and encourages verbal analysis. This presents reading as a creative act in its own right. The common practice of memorizing poems also improves long-term brain health. Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are less susceptible(易受影影响的) to Alzheimer's.
Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think. In great poetry, meaning is not obvious or one-dimensional, Understanding poetry is an active practice, rather than the passive engagement with prose(散文). Readers of poetry are more likely than non-readers to analyze information for viewpoints. This skill benefits students, and anyone who wants to form their own opinions of news items or gain a better perspective on documents like contracts. The critical thinking skills developed through reading poetry give language itself greater control.
The most remarkable power of literature is its ability to unite readers and writers across time and cultural boundaries. As condensed(浓缩的) literature, poetry offers these benefits in a powerful way. Poetry triggers memories and emotions in its readers. This connection between universal emotions and personal experience encourages the development of empathy(共鸣). A reader might have no practical conception of what life was like during the Elizabethan era in England. However, Shakespeare's sonnets with their universal themes of love and longing, can bridge the gap of centuries and help us gain an insight into people's feelings in the 17th century.
8.Which of the following shows the benefit memorizing poetry brings to the brain
A.It makes one act more creatively.
B.It improves people's long-term memories.
C.It improves one's ability to analyse issues.
D.It makes one less likely to catch Alzheimer's.
9.In what way does poetry improve critical thinking
A.Readers can have good control over language.
B.Readers can analyze information to form viewpoints.
C.Readers can understand the obvious meaning of poetry.
D.Readers can gain a better perspective on documents.
10.Why does the author mention Shakespeare's sonnets
A.To show poetry helps develop empathy.
B.To show the universal themes of poetry.
C.To show Shakespeare's understanding of life.
D.To show poetry motivates us to learn different cultures.
11.What is the purpose of the text

一、阅读理解
For the past five years, Paula Smith, a historian of science, has devoted herself to re-creating long-forgotten techniques. While doing research for her new book, she came across a 16th-century French manuscript(手稿) consisting of nearly 1,000 sets of instructions, covering subjects from tool making to finding the best sand.
The author's intention remains as mysterious(神秘的) as his name; he may have been simply taking notes for his own records. But Smith was struck mainly by the fact that she didn't truly grasp any of the skills the author described. "You simply can't get an understanding of that handwork by reading about it," she says.
Though Smith did get her hands on the best sand, doing things the old-fashioned way isn't just about playing around with French mud. Reconstructing the work of the craftsmen(工匠) who lived centuries ago can reveal how they viewed the world, what objects filled their homes, and what went on in the workshops that produced them. It can even help solve present-day problems: In 2015, scientists discovered that a 10th-century English medicine for eye problems could kill a drug-resistant virus.
The work has also brought insights for museums, Smith says. One must know how an object was made in order to preserve it. What's more, reconstructions might be the only way to know what treasures looked like before time wore them down. Scholars have seen this idea in practice with ancient Greek and Roman statues. These sculptures were painted a rainbow of striking colours. We can't appreciate these kinds of details without seeing works of art as they originally appeared—something Smith believes you can do only when you have a road map.
Smith has put the manuscript's ideas into practice. Her final goal is to link the worlds of art and science back together. She believes that bringing the old recipes to life can help develop a kind of learning that highlights experimentation, teamwork, and problem solving.
Back when science—then called "the new philosophy"—took shape, academics looked to craftsmen for help in understanding the natural world. Microscopes and telescopes were invented by way of artistic tinkering(修补), as craftsmen experimented with glass to better bend light.
If we can rediscover the values of hands-on experience and craftwork, Smith says, we can marry the best of our modern insights with the handiness of our ancestors.
1.How did Smith feel after reading the French manuscript
A.Confused about the technical terms. B.Impressed with its detailed instructions.
C.Discouraged by its complex structure. D.Shocked for her own lack of hand skills.
2.According to Smith, the reconstruction work is done mainly to _____.
A.restore old workshops B.understand the craftsmen
C.improve visual effects D.inspire the philosophers
3.Why does the author mention museums
A.To reveal the beauty of ancient objects. B.To present the findings of old science.
C.To highlight the importance of antiques. D.To emphasise the values of hand skills.
4.Which would be the best title for this passage
A.Craftsmen Set the Trends for Artists B.Craftsmanship Leads to New Theories
C.Craftsmanship Makes Better Scientists D.Craftsmen Reshape the Future of Science
In May 1987 the Golden Gate Bridge had a 50th birthday party. The bridge was closed to motor traffic so people could enjoy a walk across it. Organizers expected perhaps 50,000 people to show up. Instead, as many as 800,000 crowded the roads to the bridge. By the time 250,000 were on the bridge, engineers noticed something terrible: the roadway was flattening under what turned out to be the heaviest load it had ever been asked to carry. Worse, it was beginning to sway(晃动). The authorities closed access to the bridge and tens of thousands of people made their way back to land. A disaster was avoided.
The story is one of stories in To Forgive Design: Understanding Failure, a book that is at once a love letter to engineering and a paean(赞歌) to its breakdowns. Its author, Dr. Henry Petroski, has long been writing about disasters. In this book, he includes the loss of the space shuttles(航天飞机) Challenger and Columbia, and the sinking of the Titanic.
Though he acknowledges that engineering works can fail because the person who thought them up or engineered them simply got things wrong, in this book Dr. Petroski widens his view to consider the larger context in which such failures occur. Sometimes devices fail because a good design is constructed with low quality materials incompetently applied. Or perhaps a design works so well that it is adopted elsewhere again and again, with seemingly harmless improvements, until, suddenly, it does not work at all anymore.
Readers will encounter not only stories they have heard before, but some new stories and a moving discussion of the responsibility of the engineer to the public and the ways young engineers can be helped to grasp them.
"Success is success but that is all that it is," Dr. Petroski writes. It is failure that brings improvement.

7.What does the last paragraph suggest
A.Failure can lead to progress. B.Success results in overconfidence.
C.Failure should be avoided. D.Success comes from joint efforts.
8.What is the text

一、阅读理解
Teachers and parents should help children pay more attention to the mistakes they make so they can better learn from them, according to new research.
In the study led by researchers at Michigan State University, 123 children whose average age was 7 were assessed on whether they had a growth mindset (believing people can work harder to get smarter), or a fixed mindset (believing intelligence is unable to be changed). The researchers then asked the children to complete a fast-moving accuracy task on a computer while their brain activity was recorded.
Based on the data they collected, the researchers concluded that children with growth mindsets were much more likely to have a more active brain response after making a mistake. In addition, they were more likely to improve their performance by paying closer attention to the task after making a mistake. While previous research has shown that people with a fixed mindset didn't want to acknowledge they had made a mistake, this study found that children with fixed mindsets were able to bounce back after making mistakes, but only if they gave full attention to the mistakes. "The main implication (含义) here is that we should pay more attention to our mistakes and use them as opportunities to learn," said study author Hans Schroder.
For parents and teachers, the lessons are clear. They should focus on using mistakes to work together and learn. Many teachers and parents avoid addressing children's mistakes, telling them "It's OK. You'll get it next time." without giving them the opportunity to figure out what went wrong. Schroder says, "Instead, it's better to reassure (使安心) children that mistakes happen, so try to pay attention and work to figure out where and how they made the mistakes."
1.How was the data collected during the research
A. By counting the number of children's mistakes.
B. By recording children's brain activity.
C. By asking children fast-moving questions.
D. By testing children's intelligence.
2.Who most probably belongs to the growth mindset group
A. A child who manages to correct every mistake seriously.
B. A child who believes her mistakes are made by chance.
C. A child who keeps an idea that he has a gift for studying.
D. A child who thinks she can perform well without any effort.
3.How is paragraph 3 developed
A. By giving examples. B. By listing facts.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving explanations.
4.What should parents do with their child's mistakes according to Schroder
A. Avoid talking about their child's mistakes.
B. Discuss the mistakes with their child patiently.
C. Ignore the mistakes and believe he'll do better.
D. Compare their child with others and blame him.
When we're in trouble, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or in the lunch queue Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realise just how important social networks are in their lives. This realisation has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them. There's also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (违背) when we must accept a "fiend" request from a parent or family member.
It's a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don't want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel we have something to hide. On the other hand if we do accept, then we could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way we did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request, it doesn't necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.
5.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Parents have realised the importance of social networks.
B. Parents feel secure about their privacy online.
C. Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D. Social networks offer a chance for parents to communicate.
6.What may be the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent's friend request
A. Their parents make negative comments on them.
B. They hide something from their parents.
C. They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D. Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
7.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Online life. B. The difficult choice.
C. Parents' request. D. Teenagers” refusal.
8.What is the passage mainly about
A. Privacy online. B. Parents' friend requests.
C. The generation gap. D. Social networks.
Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioural problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don't have to be home all the time to be present in their children's lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other's company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter's invitation to work or read nearby while she is sitting and doing her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and his or her parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children regard their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents' movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don't want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted plant”, as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
9.What did the study find about the 618 teens
A. They had more dinners with their parents.
B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
C. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
D. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
10.What is the author's attitude to her two friends' behaviour
A. She doubts it. B. She supports it.
C. She is worried about it. D. She cares little about it.
11.What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 5
A. They want their parents' presence.
B. They want their parents to be safe.
C. They want more freedom from parents.
D. They show more interest in new activities.
12.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Teens Want Potted Plant Parents
B. Your Kids Still Need Protection
C. Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers
D. Parents Know Little About Today's Teenagers

一、阅读理解
Douglas Thron's love for animals began when he was a little kid. After he grew up, Thron worked as a photographer for shows like Discovery Channel's Shark Week, filming the great white sharks off the coast of Santa Cruz, Calif. But Thron says it was the Paradise fire in California in 2018 that pushed him to do animal rescue work.
At the time, Thron was filming a man who was rescuing cats after the fire using a special camera. The camera uses heat to look for the animals at night. Thron and the man talked about how wonderful it would be to put one on a drone (无人机) to search for animals more easily. He explains that flying a drone over a big disaster gives you a real feel for how serious the disaster is. He adds, "You definitely get inspired to drop everything to help as much as possible. The feeling I get when I rescue an animal is an unbelievable feeling, so it just keeps me going."
The first animal Thron ever rescued was a dog after a hurricane happened, which destroyed hundreds of houses. Thron tested out flying a drone and found the dog in the middle of where hundreds of houses had been destroyed. "I flew the drone over and I found him. Nobody claimed him after 30 days so I adopted him, and he's a super wonderful dog," he says.
Thron adds that he's been going non-stop since then. His TV show Doug to the Rescue shows some of his heartwarming animal rescues, including those after Hurricane Laura in Louisiana in 2020 and after fires in Northern California and Oregon. Thron also helped rescue koalas after the horrible fires ravaged parts of Australia and burned down a number of houses in 2020, using drones for the first time there to help locate so many animals.

Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5m long and weigh over 400kg, occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche-we revere(敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams. Ask the tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National Park what they most hope to see, and the iranswer is often the same: a grizzly bear.
"Grizzly bears are re-occupying large areas of their former range," says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they haven't been seen in a century or more, they're increasingly being sighted by humans.
U.S.he western half of the U.S. was full of grizzlies when Europeans came, with a rough number of 50,000 or more living alongside Native Americans. By the early 1970s, after centuries of cruel and continuous hunting by settlers, 600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.
U.S.U.S., there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S. Their recovery has been so successful that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to de-list grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed.
Obviously, if precautions(预防) aren't taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away. "Our hope is to have a clean, attractant-free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits," says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.

8.What can be ierere from the last paragraph
A. Food should be provided for grizzlies.
B. People can live in harmony with grizzlies.

People perform graceful moves, all while standing on a bamboo strip in the river. You may think it's a scene from an art movie, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: bamboo drifting(独竹漂).
Bamboo drifting dates back to over 2,000 years ago in the Chishui River area of Guizhou. During the Qin Dynasty, the Bozhou district of Zunyi city was known for its high-quality Nanmu. It was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no transportation along the Chishui River, people had to stand on one log(原木) to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo's lower price.
Now, communities in Guizhou hold bamboo drifting competitions every year during the Dragon Boat Festival. Due to the great strength and balance it takes for one to get the hang of this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Yang Liu, 24, is an inheritor of bamboo drifting. Yang said the most challenging part of bamboo drifting was keeping one's balance." I fell in the water several times when I was practising," she said.
But the love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat.
Yang also produces new ideas when spreading the culture of bamboo drifting. For example, she connects dance with bamboo drifting to make it more graceful and wears hanfu when performing, creating a beautiful feel. In 2020, Yang registered on social media platforms and posted her videos. "I want to spread it to other countries so that more people around the world will like Chinese culture," she told China Daily.

Finger painting is an art that most people experienced in childhood. But there are still people who know little about this art form. Finger painting is a simple activity that involves dipping(浸) fingers into paints and then using fingers to create objects and shapes on a piece of paper. All you need is a table at elbow height, a few sheets of plain paper, and a few bottles of water colors.
When engaging kids in this activity, one should provide non-toxic paints only. If not readily available in the market, non-toxic paints can be made at home easily. Preferably, the paints should also be eatable. Finger paints come in bright colors and can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Adults can save money by making their own finger paints using a mixture of cornstarch(玉米淀粉)food coloring and water.
It is a common fallacy that finger painting is for children alone; rather, it's an activity that can be enjoyed by adults in equal measure. Adults can use rubber gloves while painting to avoid dirty marks of paints on their hands. When a group of people are gathered for an exercise of finger painting, it can be a great way of creating a bond between them. Art and painting parties are a popular concept in the West. Organizations can also use finger painting as a team-building activity by making participants paint together on a large canvas (画布).
There's no limit to the expression of feelings in finger painting. All one needs to do is go all out and put all his feelings on a piece of paper by dipping his fingers into paints. While painting, one may unconsciously choose colors that reflect his emotions. For example, you may choose the color red to express your anger or green to express hope. At times you may be confused, and the painting will help you describe your confused state of mind. Once you express your emotions on paper, you are likely to feel relieved.
So what are you waiting for Plan a finger-painting session soon, and experience the joy.

一、阅读理解
My day is never complete without being outdoors and taking photos of wildlife, no matter what the season. My husband Mick and I took early retirement. Upon retirement, we moved from the Niagara region to the small town of Dwight, Ontario. Our home was on a small private lake in the country. Luckily, there was lots of wildlife to keep it interesting.
One of our neighbours, George, introduced me to the wonderful world of bird watching. George had many feeders in his yard and I quickly learned the names of the many local birds that visited them often. My favourite was the ruby-throated hummingbird(蜂鸟). These tiny, super fast little birds were both interesting and amazing to watch.
One summer day I went over to George's house and stood on a ladder(梯子) beside a feeder, trying to get a close-up of the tiny-winged bird, when it started to rain. I sheltered as I stood on the second-to-top rung of the ladder so my camera and I didn't get drenched. Then came the most amazing experience of my life. There must have been two dozen hummingbirds flying around me and the feeder for an hour or so, and I enjoyed feeling the air across my face created by their hardworking wings and watching some of them come right up to within inches of my face looking at me. I was able to get a few good close-up shots but what was most memorable was the feeling of being part of the hummingbird community.
When the sky cleared, I walked back to my lake house, still hearing the hum of two dozen little wings. That was when I decided I needed to put up my own hummingbird feeder to study and learn these little birds.
I bought a small feeder, filled it with sugar water and placed it in the tree outside my kitchen window. Within a short time I got my first little visitor. I'll never forget how excited I was and how excited I am today, even after six years, every time I see one.

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, the aged, and children who have lost their parents, but also friends, workmates, relatives and neighbors whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, when a Cleveland man noticed that some people, such as children who lost their parents and patients who lay in bed, too often felt forgotten and neglected, he developed in his mind the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving them small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he gave those people small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called "Sweetest Day". Over time, the Sweetest Day's idea of spreading cheer to the poor, the sick and children who had lost their parents was broadened(扩大) to include everyone, and the day became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. Soon the idea spread to other cities all over the USA.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group's religious beliefs or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning. Because of many people remembering to take the form of gift giving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care, in a positive way.

一、阅读理解
As the world's resources become fewer because of continuing land development and the growing human population, the natural habitats of wild animals have continued to reduce. As a result, the survival of some species of wildlife is threatened. To help protect wildlife, a lot of practice should be carried out by the general public.
Create homes for species that are endangered because of losing their own natural habitats. Wildlife shelters should be developed, and habitats should be created in existing national parks. Efforts should also be made to protect existing habitats, such as providing food and water and limiting hunting. Breed(培育)endangered species in places such as zoos. Once the young animals grow up, they can be set free into the wild where their population will continue to grow.
The general public may not realize that a species is endangered until it's too late. Educational programs making use of TV advertising and instructional meetings at national parks can be used to make the public aware of the situation.
The general public can help protect the wildlife by not hunting wild animals for sport or for a source of food. They should also stop supporting those who earn money from the illegal hunting of wild animals, such as hunters who hunt wild animals for the only purpose of selling them for money.
If there is no market for wild animals, there will be no killing of these endangered species. The public should avoid keeping wild animals as pets. This will limit the number of wild animals being tracked, trapped, sold and removed from their natural habitats.
1.Many measures can be used to protect wild animals except_______.
A.creating new habitats
B.developing wildlife shelters
C.protecting the existing habitats
D.setting the young animals free into the wild

D.Human activities can affect the existence of endangered species.
3.What can we infer from the passage
A.Some people hunt wild animals and sell them as pets.
B.The animal population in the zoo becomes larger.
C.Hunters get little money from hunting wild animals.
D.The general public is doing nothing about protecting the wildlife now.
4.In which column of a newspaper can we find the passage
A.Environment.

C.Technology.
D.Education.
I have been studying literature all the time, so someone asked me if I made the wrong choice by devoting myself to studying literature. I was deep in thought.
A good friend of mine took every single literature class she could while in college and decided early on that she wasn't cut out to be a teacher. Her parents were concerned because she wasn't really focused on becoming something that would pay the bills. In order to alleviate their concerns, she took a course in library science and told them she would regard library science as a areer path. But she ended up taking a job as a communications assistant at a midsize company and eventually became the director of communications. She put her literature studies to work in making company materials and has benefited a lot from that.
Another friend turned his love of Hemingway's writings into inspiration for his artworks. Most people don't stay at one job for their entire career. I can't tell you how many teachers I worked with over the years give up teaching to paint houses, work in an advertising company, start his or her own business and so on. A degree is important to get your foot in the door. But I think you should choose your job based on what you're really interested in, and no one says you have to do something for the rest of your work life.
Colleges generally don't clue you in on the possible career paths available to you with your particular studies, but some are getting far better with guiding students towards the possibilities. Your reading, writing and analytical skills would be great advantages in some jobs, so don't think that your love of literature is going to leave you with few choices. So I don't feel sad to devote myself to studying literature.
5.What does the underlined word "alleviate" in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Express. B.Relieve. C.Deepen D.Raise..
6.What does the author want to say by mentioning his friends

Singapore's tradition of eating out in places called hawker centers is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting at people walking by on the street. Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture. Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods are very popular. Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On December 16th, 2020, UNESCO added the city's "hawker culture" to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years |ago. Now that it has been recognized, Singapore must provide a report every six years to UNESCO. The report must show efforts it has made to save and support its hawker culture.
"These centers serve as 'community dining rooms', where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner," UNESCO said.
In the 1970s, Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centers. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now, the centers offer many different low-cost meals to local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.
But, now the average age of a hawker in Singapore is 60 years old. Younger Singaporeans now want to work in offices. They are less interested in working in small restaurants. The COVID-19 health crisis also hurts sales, preventing foreign visitors and locals from eating out.

It's clear that following a plant-based diet is connected with a lower risk of heart disease. There are many types of plant-based diets, and they all emphasize certain foods connected with heart benefits, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and healthy oils. The diets have been most studied for their impact on heart health. These diets are rich in vitamins and minerals that help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of diabetes (糖尿病) and help keep a healthy weight, all of which can lower your risk of heart disease.
Yet, the types of plant foods and their sources are also important. For example, white rice and white bread are plant-based foods, so you would think they're good to eat. But they are highly processed, and so are depleted of many heart-healthy nutrients and they can make blood sugar levels rise sharply and increase hunger, leading to overeating. Drinking 100% fruit juice is not the same as eating the whole fruit, since juices can be high in sugar.
Do you really have to cut out all meat for your heart health Which animal foods could have an impact on heart health Some research has shown that the type and amount matter most. A 2014 study showed that men aged 45 to 79 who ate 75 grammes or more per day of processed red meat, like cold cuts, sausage, bacon and hot dogs, had a 28% higher risk of heart failure compared with those who ate less than 25 grammes. However, a study in 2017 found that eating 85 grammes of unprocessed red meat, three times per week , did not worsen blood pressure.
What is the right plant-based diet for you “For many men, this may be a matter of switching their current foods,” says Dr Satija, a researcher at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

The goji berry(枸杞),which has been part of Chinese culture, is now being viewed as one of the hottest superfoods available today. This small berry is thought to have anti-ageing powers and has achieved newfound global standing as a superfood. The Chinese call it the goji berry or wolfberry.
The goji berry, which is packed with vitamin C, is viewed as a fruit. China's love of the goji berry dates back hundreds of years. At home, Chinese men and women will put dried goji berries over homemade chicken to give themselves a vitamin increase. The goji berry is also viewed as a herb. It is believed by doctors to improve liver and kidney functions.
However, there are certain times when doctors will not advise its use as it may exacerbate a patient's condition. "If a person has a fever or sore throat, I would suggest that he stop taking goji berries during that period of time," a Chinese doctor said.
Asia's younger generations(一代)have accepted the goji berry, but are trying it in their own ways. For example, members of Gen Z are now buying " wellness kettles" for their goji berry tea. Their parents recognize these as traditional soup kettles that have been repackaged by brands such as Buydeem and turned into a shade of pink. A 2019 study on Gen Z in China showed that this generation sees living a healthy life as a key priority, even over money and personal enjoyment.
The berry has also become popular with international consumers. Attracted by the superfood, whose popularity comes on the back of the global awareness of its medical value, people in the West are paying up to $10 for a package of the berries, around three times the price in China.
5.What's the function of the goji berry
A. It can treat a cold.
B. It can bring down a fever.

8.Why is the goji berry so popular around the world
A. It has a long history.
B. It has medical value.
C. It is much cheaper in the West.
D. It has an attractive appearance.
According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions(份), it's the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid.
To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, 95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to ostensibly(表面上) participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds.
Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin.
For the second test, in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test: the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces.
The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we're making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more, so will I. Call it the "I'll have what she's having" effect. However, we'll adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion, I'll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot, I'll follow suit. If he can eat much and keep slim, why can't I
9.What is the recent study mainly about
A.Food safety. B.Movie viewership.
C.Consumer demand. D.Eating behavior.
10.What does the underlined word "beanpoles" in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.Big eaters. B.Overweight persons.
C.Picky eaters. D.Tall thin persons.
11.Why did the researchers hire the actor
A.To see how she would affect the participants.
B.To test if the participants could recognize her.
C.To find out what she would do in the two tests.
D.To study why she could keep her weight down.
12.On what basis do we "adjust the influence" according to the last paragraph
A.How hungry we are. B.How slim we want to be.
C.How we perceive others. D.How we feel about the food.
参考答案
1.答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的It's clear that following a plant-based diet is connected with a lower risk of heart disease. There are many types of plant-based diets, and they all emphasize certain foods connected with heart benefits以及all of which can lower your risk of heart disease可知,植物性饮食可以降低患心脏病的风险,对心脏健康有益。故选A项。
2.答案:B
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线短语前的they are highly processed及下文的they can make blood sugar levels rise sharply and increase hunger可知,此处以白米饭和白面包为例,说明这类食物因经过高度加工而不利于健康,这类食物已经失去了许多对心脏有益的营养物质。由此可猜测,depleted of 意思是“减少;损耗”,与short of(缺乏)意思相近。故选B项。
3.答案:A
解析:推理判断题。第三段中用2014年和2017年的研究结果来证实“动物性食品是否会对心脏健康产生影响取决于食物的种类和数量”的观点。因此,作者提及具体的数字是为了证明结果是可信的。故选A项。
The goji berry is also viewed as a herb. It is believed by doctors to improve liver and kidney functions"可知,枸杞对肝脏和肾脏有益。故选C项。
6.答案:A
解析:考查词义猜测。根据第三段中的"However, there are certain times when doctors will not advise its use"可知,有时候医生并不建议使用枸杞,由此可推断,有时候枸杞会有不好的作用。再结合本段列举的实例可知,该处表示的是枸杞可能会使病情"恶化"。故选A项。
7.答案:D
解析:考查推理判断。根据第四段中的"Asia's younger generations(一代)have accepted the goji berry, but are trying it in their own ways"可推知,列举 Gen Z的例子是为了说明年轻一代用自己的方式来接受枸杞的现象。故选D项。
8.答案:B
解析:考查细节理解。根据最后一段中的"Attracted by the superfood, whose popularity comes on the back of the global awareness of its medical value"可知,枸杞之所以在全世界受欢迎,是因为人们看到了它的药用价值。故选B项。
9.答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的"According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake."

If an overweight person is having a large portion, I'll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot, I'll follow suit."

A small recording room outside the Congolese capital Kinshasa has become a safe space for homeless teenagers. They sing about their life on the streets and dream of a better future. The homeless sing about their childhood, living conditions, and living experiences at the Mokili NaPoche cultural centre. It is a safe space that allows young people and children to wash and eat.
"It really makes me happy when I sing," said 19-year-old Mavakala. He has slept on the streets for years. There are more than 20,000 homeless children in Kinshasa. Other teenagers looked on with happiness as Mavakala turned on the recording equipment at the centre.
Mavakala dreams of bigger goals after having the chance to record in a real recording space. He said, "It stimulates me and I tell myself—ah, life belongs to brave persons." He added that US rapper Lil Wayne and Congolese star Fally Ipupa influenced his music.
He has been coming to the centre for the past three years, taking part in the music, art, and reading classes it offers throughout the day. Founder Cedrick Tshimbalanga hopes these skills and daily experiences will help the children build a base for their life and their voices.
"With music, young people are able to talk about their daily experience--everything they live through daily: happiness and sadness," said Tshimbalanga, who plans to release (发行) their music soon.
The classes are also a chance for young people to make up for lost chances in life. While the Democratic Republic of the Congo has made progress in education, over 7 million children aged between 5 and 17 still do not have schooling, UNICEF found.
"Break free from the homeless life, my friend. It's time to see what the future holds for you," Mavakalasang during an excitement-filled performance at the centre.

2.What does the underlined word “stimulates” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Encourages. B. Worries. C. Surprises. D. Warns.
3.What is Tshimbalanga's goal in doing his work
A. To offer children a happy childhood.
B. To prevent poor children sleeping in the street.
C. To prepare the homeless for a better future.
D. To train young people to become future artists.
4.What are the words of Mavakala's song used to do
A. Remind people to make up for the lost chances.
B. Tell about the difficult life of the homeless.
C. Describe his hope for the wonderful life.
D. Call on those in trouble to change their lives.
When I was in primary school, my favourite place was the library. I was the kid who got yelled (吼叫) at for trying to bring home sixty books secretly at a time because I just couldn't decide which world I wanted to experience that week. I remember spending my weekends glued to a book, hungering for experiencing lives other than my own. Up until middle school, reading was a passion (酷爱) of mine.
Something changed after I entered senior high school though. All of a sudden, reading was a task that I could not escape fast enough. The books that I read in school bored me, or even if I enjoyed the books themselves, the challenging homework I completed based on those books made me hate reading as a whole.
It actually wasn't until recently that I rediscovered my love for reading. How, you may ask Audiobooks (有声书). Last summer, I spent every morning taking long walks while listening to them, and I would find myself lost in the stories for hours. And now I'm rediscovering my passion for reading. I feel that pull again. That curiosity.
My love story with reading may have had a happy ending, but not everyone is as lucky as me. What went wrong
What will happen is that students lose their love for reading because of the way many schools try to encourage children to read. For example, when a child is told to read for twenty minutes every night, they will read for the required amount of time and then check the task off on their list. In this way, reading has suddenly become a boring task instead of an exciting experience.
Making sure that kids keep their passion for reading will require us to rethink how we teach reading in schools and how we introduce books to children outside of school as well. There needs to be less of a focus on meeting reading requirements and more of a focus on creating an environment in which students are actually excited to read.
5.Which word best describes the author's love for books before high school
A. Confusing. B. Crazy. C. Secret. D. Short-lived.
6.Why did the author once hate reading
A. She couldn't choose what to read. B. She found high school books difficult.
C. She was given too many books to read. D. Reading as a task turned her off.
7.What does the underlined word “pull” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Attraction. B. Duty. C. Annoyance. D. Influence.
8.What advice does the author give in the last paragraph
A. Give kids extra-curricular reading tasks.
B. Encourage parents to introduce books to kids.
C. Improve schools' ways of teaching reading.
D. Develop kids' interest in advanced literature.
High school, for most teenagers, is a space where new adventures and challenges begin. I clearly remember my first day of high school. As I entered the school gate, I was greeted by a crowd of students. The hallways were filled with talking and laughter. It was a lot to handle, and I felt like a tiny fish in vast ocean. I held my schedule tightly, trying to find the right classroom. My heart raced as I was scared of getting lost.
My first class was English, and as I walked in, I spotted familiar faces from my previous school. I breathed a sigh of relief as I took my seat, surrounded by friendly smiles. My English teacher, Mrs Johnson, introduced herself and made everyone feel comfortable. She explained what we would be studying during the semester and encouraged us to share our thoughts and ideas. The next class was mathematics, which happened to be my weakest subject. I felt a tight feeling in my stomach as I entered the classroom, but my maths teacher, Mr Smith, turned out to be very patient. He promised us that we would learn and improve together. His words of support made me feel more relaxed, and I began to believe that I could overcome my maths struggles.
During lunchtime, I sat with a group of students who quickly became my friends. We shared stories, and talked about our expectations for high school. It was during this time that I realised that high school wasn't just about academic (学术性的) subjects; it was also about building friendships and making lasting memories.
The rest of the day flew by with a variety of classes, faces, and experiences. My first day of high school was filled with moments of anxiety, joy, and the promise of new beginnings.
9.Why did the author feel like a tiny fish in a vast ocean at first
A. Because of excitement and curiosity.
B. Because of the school's welcoming atmosphere.
C. Because of fear of the unfamiliar environment.
D. Because of good preparations for the new school.
10.Which words can best describe the English teacher
A. Cenerous and powerful. B. Responsible and patient.
C. Inspiring and friendly. D. Outgoing and warm-hearted.
11.How did the author feel when entering the maths class
A. Excited. B. Anxious. C. Relaxed. D. Confident.
12.What did the author realise during lunchtime
A. High school only focused on studying.
B. High school was an extremely challenging place.
C. High school was full of old friends and classmates.
D. High school was also about wonderful social experiences.

一、阅读理解
Vegetarian foods are not equally healthy, according to the research at ESC Congress 2020. Dr. Matina said, "This finding is more clear in women. Previous research has shown that women tend to eat more plant-based foods and fewer animal-based products than men. But our study healthier food choices suggests this does not ensure and in turn better health condition."
Most studies see plant-based diets simply as "vegetarian" or" low in meat", thus treating all plant-based foods as equal. However, this study examined the type of plant-based foods eaten, in addition to the overall amount. Healthy plant-based products were made up of fruits, vegetables and coffee while unhealthy plant-based products included juices, potatoes and any kind of sweets.
The study examined the link between the quantity(数量) and quality of plant-based foods and period. In 2011, the heart health over a 10-yearstudy selected 146 fat adults living in Athens with normal blood pressure and blood sugar. Diet was studied using a questionnaire about usual habits in the year. It listed 156 foods and drinks commonly had in Greece. Within ten years, nearly half of these fat participants developed high blood pressure and high blood sugar, though most of them preferred plant-based foods. The rest who ate quality plant-based foods, however, didn't have these health problems.
Regarding the quality of plant-based foods, healthier choices were linked with keeping normal blood pressure and blood sugar. On the contrary, eating unhealthy plant-based foods was connected with developing high blood pressure and high blood sugar. These relationships were stronger in women than men.
1.What did Dr. Matina say about the study
A. Vegetarian foods are unhealthy.
B. Men tend to choose healthier foods.
C. Not all plant-based foods can keep you fit.
D. Women tend to eat fewer plant-based foods.
2.What do we know about the participants in this study
A. Most of them living in Greece ate fatty foods.
B. They all had low blood pressure and blood sugar.
C. About half of them made healthier food choices.
D. Men were more likely to become worse in health condition.
3.What is the result of eating quality plant-based foods
A. It can help keep good health. B. It only benefits women's health.
C. It has nothing to do with health. D. It can make women stronger than men.
4.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Are All Vegetarian Diets Healthy
B. A Balanced Diet Is Good for Your Health
C. Plant-based Foods or Animal-based Products
D. The More Vegetarian Foods You Eat; the Healthier You Are
London has seen one of the biggest street parties in the world, with a crowd of around a million people flooding into streets with a sea of music, song and laughter. The Notting Hill Carnival, which usually takes place in August, is recognized as the largest street party in Europe. Many people from across the globe join together every summer to celebrate many cultures of England's capital. The smiles and dancing do not stop all weekend.
The festival began in 1966 as a way to encourage unity among various groups who called London's Notting Hill their home. Founder Rhaune Laslett, herself half native-American, half Russian, planned the first gathering in 1966, after being inspired by a vision(设想). "I could see the streets crowded with people in brightly colored costumes. They were dancing and following bands and they were happy. Men, women, children, blacks, whites and the brown were all laughing," she told The Caribbean Times. During what was then a period of racial(种族的) tension, Laslett believed that music and laughter were what was needed to unite the melting pot of nationalities(民族) in her west London neighborhood. "We felt that although West Indians, Africans, the Irish and many other nationalities all live in a very crowded area, there is very little communication between us," she explained in an interview in 1966, shortly after the first carnival took place.
Over the years, the festival has grown into its modern-day form and now sees the streets swell with the sound of Caribbean steel drums, the smell of street food, and the dancing of hundreds of thousands of different participants in colorful costumes. During the festival, participants find themselves in the space of music, color and creativity which brings about the emotion of joy and encourages the freedom to express themselves. When a million people can come together for one weekend of eating, laughter and music, they will forget about life's troubles for 48 hours.
5.What was Rhaune Laslett's original purpose of creating the carnival
A.To show off the neighborhood's music and dancing.
B.To invite people around the world to have a great party.
C.To encourage people to show their creativity in the street.
D.To allow people in the neighborhood to communicate more.
6.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.People live an unpleasant life for lack of the emotion of joy.
B.People can relax and enjoy themselves during the festival.
C.People's life is full of troubles and they refuse any entertainment.
D.People's purpose of joining in the festival is to express themselves.
During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction (干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street—so I can focus”. His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout (布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach works.
The researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels (分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group—those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop—significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise.
But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise—not too loud and not total silence—may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks.
So why do so many of us hate our open offices The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.
7.Why does the interviewer prefer a coworking space
A.It helps him concentrate. B.It blocks out background noise.
C.It has a pleasant atmosphere. D.It encourages face-to-face interactions.
8.Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability
A.Total silence. B.50 decibels C.70 decibels. D.85 decibels.
9.What makes an open office unwelcome to many people
A.Personal privacy unprotected. B.Limited working space.
C.Restrictions on group discussion. D.Constant interruptions.
10.What can we infer about the author from the text
A.He’s a news reporter. B.He’s an office manager.
C.He’s a professional designer. D.He’s a published writer.

There are many ways to travel within a city. We can walk, cycle, or take a bus. But no matter which way we travel, we have to stick to the route(线路) the city planners laid down for us.
Parkour practitioners(跑酷爱好者), however, see the city in a completely different way. To them, there are no fixed routes. There are no walls and no stairs—since they jump, climb, roll and crawl to move across, through, over and under anything that they find in their path. The city is their playground.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has noticed that this activity is drawing more and more people to it—there are 100,000 people taking part in parkour today in the UK alone, according to the Guardian—and how it is helpful for people to be much stronger: It trains coordination(协调性) and balance. So the organization is thinking about recognizing parkour as a new sport and adding it to the Olympics by 2024.
But parkour practitioners themselves don’t seem to be happy with the idea. They see parkour as "a lifestyle", wrote the website NextSportStar. "It’s a competition against the conditions rather than just a sport."
Indeed, many do parkour just to "escape the daily routine(事务) and experience the city in different ways", wrote reporter Oli Mould on The Conversation. They see parkour as a way to express themselves through relaxing moves and creative routes while freeing themselves from the pressure.
It’s great that the FIG wants to develop new sport and stay close to a new cultural form. But it would be greater if they knew that not everything in life is a competition.
8.How do the parkour practitioners do parkour
A.They move on as they wish.
B.They choose the routes the city planners laid down.
C.They run faster than others.
D.They stick to certain routes.
9.Why does the FIG want to add parkour to the Olympics
A.It's a special way of life. B.It draws their attention.
C.It's good for people to keep healthy. D.It needs some rules and instructions.
10.What is the author’s idea on parkour
A.It is more formal than other sports. B.It helps people to be creative.
C.It's worth adding to the sporting event. D.It calls on people to work as a team.
11.What is the best title for the passage
A.A new sports competition B.Parkour practitioners
C.Training in a different way D.Making the city their own

一、阅读理解
In 1916, two girls of wealthy familieN.Y.est friends from Auburn, N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff's granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden's book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls' decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed(牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy's return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism(坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: "When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter."

Imagine driving behind a huge truck shooting clouds of smoke into the air while your new fully electric vehicle cleans up its carbon emissions. This dream may soon be a reality. A team of students in the Netherlands has created an electric car that not only doesn't produce carbon dioxide when driving, but actually pulls it out of the air.
The two-seater sports car was designed and built in less than a year by a team of 35 students at Eindhoven University of Technology. Called "ZEM", which stands for "Zero Emission Mobility", the car is equipped with special devices that remove carbon dioxide from the air as it drives. The team calculates if ZEM is driven about 32,000 kilometres, it can remove 2 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide from the air. That's not a huge amount, but 10 ZEM cars on the road for a year would remove as much carbon dioxide as a typical tree does during that time. They point out that there are over a billion passenger cars in the world that could be using this technology. And if a billion cars were removing carbon dioxide instead of producing it, the result would be huge.
ZEM also has several other innovations that help to make it more sustainable: The car's frame and panels (控制板) are 3D printed to reduce waste; it was built using recycled and recyclable materials; and it can be easily taken apart so that many of its parts can be reused. ZEM's battery is also reusable, and has another handy feature: It can be charged with solar panels on the car's roof—and can even be used to provide power to your house when the car isn't on the road.
According to the statistics, transportation was responsible for over 20% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2020—and of those emissions, cars were responsible for 41%. The Eindhoven team says its goal is to challenge the electric car industry: If 35 students can build a car like this in less than a year, then surely car manufacturers (生产商) are expected to adopt these innovations, too.
5.What is special about ZEM
A. It can end the world's CO, release.
B. It can cut the truck's CO, emissions.
C. It can reduce the level of CO, in the air.
D. It can absorb dirty air as well as CO.
6.Why does the team calculate the amount of CO, absorbed by ZEM in Paragraph 2
A. To demonstrate a superb vision of ZEM cars.
B. To explain how ZEM removes CO, as trees do.
C. To illustrate the ongoing change in car making.
D. To show the influence of ZEM on the car market.
7.What do we know about all the components of ZEM
A. They are of high quality.
B. They are easy to process.
C. They are convenient to print.
D. They are environmentally friendly.
8.What does the Eindhoven team hope to achieve in the future
A. Sharp decline in fuel consumption.
B. Mass production of ZEM cars.
C. Big success in beating other car makers.
D. Dramatic changes in transportation.
Diana Ross, American pop singer and actress, achieved international popularity, first as the leader singer of the Supremes and later as solo (独唱的) artist. Diana Ross was born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children of Fred and Ernestine Ross, who lived in one of Detroit’s poor districts. Because her family were closely connected with each other, Ross almost didn’t notice the difficult life as she grew up.
Ross’ professional career began in 1959, when she joined several neighborhood friends to form the Primettes. The group was renamed the Supremes after signing a recording contract (合同) with Motown late the following year. The group produced many number-one hit singles (热门单曲) on the US Billboard Hot 100, including Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love and Someday We’ll Be Together. In 1967, the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes, foreshadowing (预示) Ross’ solo career, which she started in 1970.
Beginning with Ain’t No Mountain High Enough from her first solo album, Ross enjoyed more than ten years of great success with her hit singles. Ross also developed a film-acting career in the 1970s, beginning with a starring role as blues singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues and continuing with Mahogany, for which she also recorded the theme song Do You Know Where You’re Going To.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ross saw her career begin to wane. Most of her albums were re-recordings of earlier material. In 2006, she produced I Love You, a collection of love songs by many artists, and she started an energetic concert tour the following year to make the album publicly known. Although you can’t find her songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 now, Ross remains popular as one of the leading musical performers of all time.

Yellow flower carpeted fields are a sure sign of summer. In Denmark alone, more than 200,000 hectares of rapeseed (油菜籽) are planted every year. But until now, the plant has only been used for oil and animal feed, as it is both bitter and unsafe as a direct food source for humans.
To protect themselves, the rapeseed plants produce a group of substances (物质) called glucosinolates(硫苷), which give the plants a strong and bitter taste that scares off insects and disease. As a result rapeseed is unhealthy to eat and the rapeseed cake, which is the remains of the seeds after the oil has been squeezed out, has only been used in limited quantities as feed for pigs and chickens, despite its 30—40 per cent protein content.
Now, researchers from the University of Copenhagen have discovered the three proteins that help to store the bitter substances in seeds of thale cress (阿拉伯芥), a plant closely related to the rapeseed. The new discovery makes it possible to prevent the accumulation (积聚) of these substances in the seed by removing the proteins through "transport engineering" technology. In doing so, the defensive substances remain in all other parts of the plant, allowing it to continue to defend itself.
So far, the researchers have shown that their method works in thale cress. "The next task is to apply our method to the closely related rapeseed plant, which we are now working on," says Professor Halkier, leader of the research.
"Half of plant proteins in the EU come from rapeseed plants. The climate crisis demands that we reduce meat consumption and eat more plants, which is where rapeseed has great potential as a new source of plant protein. Our latest research results bring us a step closer to making full use of rapeseed," says Professor Halkier.

When students first walked into my classroom this fall, many of them immediately noticed a large quote(引语) on the wall: "In this class, failure is not an option. It's a requirement." "You want us to fail " they all asked incredulously.
Yes, I knew they would react like that! But I wanted them to know that failure is often actually a good thing for their learning. I also knew it would not be easy; kids had been hearing the opposite message for years and should not be expected to entirely shift their mindsets overnight.
In the first class, I asked the students to read an article that tells the story of two scientists, who were struggling to get rid of background noise coming from their telescope. After a year without progress, the two scientists finally turned to another scientist, Robert Dicke, who instantly realized that what they had been hearing is radiation from the beginning of the universe, which he had unsuccessfully been searching for. As the article notes, what the men had considered a failure was in fact just an answer to a different question-one that happened to lead them to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. When the story was over, seeing the smiles on the faces of some students, I knew they had understood the meaning of the quote.
I knew that students would find the upcoming learning particularly challenging, so I posted two lists on the wall—a list of "what it means to be smart in science" and a list of new skills they had learned in class which could help students see how they progressed after taking on challenges in class.
Besides, I often asked them to work in groups. As they were working on a complex problem, I was constantly mindful of my tendency (倾向) to step in and redirect groups taking unexpected approaches. When 1 did, however, I found the most interesting ideas and work products usually came from those groups that started out on what initially appeared to be an unfruitful path. At that moment, I knew my work had brought good results!
5.What does the underlined word “incredulously” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Unbelievably. B.Proudly. C.Coldly. D.Eagerly.
6.What message did the story of the two scientists convey to the students
A.Failure can hardly be avoided in life.
B.Failure can really have its positive side.
C.We should analyze the cause of our failure.
D.One's failure can motivate others to work harder.
7.What is the author's purpose of posting the two lists
A.To prepare the students for challenges.
B.To call on students to face challenges together.
C.To show the value of the challenges in class.
D.To assess students' ability to handle challenges.
8.What is the author's attitude towards the results of his teaching method
A.Disappointed. B.Satisfied. C.Confused. D.Worried.

When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed an exam, her heart sank. She'd failed that test weeks earlier, and needed more work to advance her own career. But instead of anxiety, she called her friend. "I congratulated her and told her she inspired me," she said. She was surprised when (在……之后) her attitude changed, she could share her friend's happiness and experience her own, in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person's good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude (乐他人之幸), a term that describes the joy we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it isn't directly connected with us. Freudenfreude is like social glue, says Catherine Chambliss, a professor of psychology at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. It makes relationships "closer and more enjoyable". Sharing in someone else's joy can also improve life satisfaction and resilience (适应力) and help people cоoperate during a conflict.
While the benefits of freudenfreude are plentiful, it doesn't always come easily. Sometimes, your loss might really sting (使痛苦) you, making freudenfreude feel out of reach. If you are raised in a family that pairs winning with self-worth, Chambliss says, you might misread someone else's victory as your own personal shortcomings. And factors such as mental health and overall well-being (幸福) can also affect your ability to participate in someone else's joy. Still, freudenfreude is worthwhile and there are ways to encourage the feeling.
Instead of an automatic response, freudenfreude is often a motivated process. To help people strengthen joy-sharing muscles, Chambliss and her colleagues developed a programme called Freudenfreude Enhancement Training (FET), featuring two exercises. They found that depressed people who used the practices for two weeks had an easier time expressing freudenfreude, which built up their relationships and improved their mood.
In addition, freudenfreude encourages us to regard individual success as a joint effort. No one gets to the top alone, and when we elevate (提升) others, we're often carried up with them. Jean Grae, an artist, supports friends by adopting this mindset. When someone gets a new opportunity or reaches a milestone, he or she makes sure to celebrate. Grae says she's especially moved when anyone considers others' success. "It's truly inspirational," she says, "because it lifts us all up and makes us shine."

A. To test the effects of freudenfreude.
B. To help people apply freudenfreude.
C. To get people to know freudenfreude.

I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet unrelated to boring housework and raising little kids. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was "it" and we met at a local painting class. Thus we began a friendship that was to last for 25years—until the day he died.
George took to painting with an awe-inspiring(令人钦佩的) level of passion and commitment, even changing the spare bedroom of his home into a studio. How I envied him, as in my own home 1 had neither the space nor the funds for such a luxury. His painting equipment was comprehensive. George housed many items in a tool box-a red metal tool box. For about six years George and I studied together through various units until the completion of the course.
Fast-forward some years and George was then about 80 years old. One day, he rang and told me that he was giving up painting and giving away all his "stuff". "I can't paint, Bev. I don't know why I ever thought I could," he declared. Actually, he was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However, George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise. And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me. "You have the best talent and are most likely to use it," he said. After considerable persuasion, I accepted this precious gift on condition that he could get it back at any time. He never did, of course.
I still use much of his equipment today. As I paint, I often remember George, his big personality, generous spirit and unfailing encouragement. Having friends is obviously good for countless reasons. And showing the world that you have lots of friends, for example on social media, seems like a great idea. If that is the truth, your goal is to enlarge your social network. Once people see how popular you are, they'll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that some of your popularity will rub off on them. Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle.
However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time It's always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you.
In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments, the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend people who have fewer friends than they do, not more. The authors call this phenomenon (现象) the "friend-number paradox (悖论)", which is also the title of their new paper.
Social ties are obviously important. Having more of these connections suggests greater social value, and more potential possibilities. So it seems reasonable to assume that people will focus their social energies on making friends with people who have lots of friends already.
But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there's reciprocity (互惠) involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to carry out those responsibilities—especially those with too many friends.
In other words, "friendship quality" matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become diluted (削弱), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people will consider the fact when deciding whether to make friends with you. They don't want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay them back.

一、阅读理解
The top-selling album Songs of the Humpback Whale was released in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales and eventually helped save thousands of whales' lives.
The album might never have been made if it hadn't been for a US Navy engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1950s, Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange, deep sounds, which he realized were coming from whales.
Watlington played the recordings for a pair of biologists named Roger Payne and Katy Payne. When they listened, they were instantly fascinated by the beauty of the whales' voices.
Katy Payne studied music as well as biology, and she was amazed by how the whales communicated like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting detail: They had recognizable patterns. In biological terms, an animal call with a repeating pattern is called a song. The songs of whales are so complex that some scientists have even compared whales to composers and poets.
The Paynes thought that other people needed to hear the beauty of the whales' songs, so Roger organized the recordings into an album. At the time when the album came out, whales were often hunted and traded for money and some whale species were dying out. Most people had never thought of whales as creatures that could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album, many people began to think differently. The album led people to start the Save the Whales movement. Musicians began using whale songs in their music, and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1986, the deep-sea whaling was banned.
It might seem incredible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this one-of-a-kind album revealed secrets long hidden beneath the waves and allowed these mamazing creatures to finally share their songs with the human world.

Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines(核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China's nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China's early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.

At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China's nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
