Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However, you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm,in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Gardens
One of the most famous light paths of the season,Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through.Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9,and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 pm.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3.Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.

D.The country expects to differ from previous years.
22.In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit of Christmas
A.Oxford Street.
B.Kew Gardens.
C.Regent Street.
D.Covent Garden.

As a child,I was proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present—part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While growing up,I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant.I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”,my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South.I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer.I would have to talk less “country”.So I killed a piece of myself.I’m ashamed of it,but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else—change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She,unlike me,accepted her roots.Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion.I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent.I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel(元音) sounds.I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now,I see that it was actually about justifying my hiding part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me,“Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South,it’s important to me.
24.What made the author want to leave her hometown
A.Appeal of convenience in cities.
B.Her dream of becoming a writer.
C.Outside prejudice against southerners.
D.Her desire for the northern accent.
25.How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother
A.Upset. B.Pleased.
C.Ashamed. D.Surprised.
26.Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent
A.To prove herself right.
B.To help Emily be a reporter.
C.To make herself influential.
D.To protect Emily’s self-dignity.
27.What message does the text want to convey
A.Stay true to your roots.
B.Never do things by halves.
C.Hold on to your dreams.
D.Never judge a person by his accent.
C
Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest half of all the 7,000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution(迫害),with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous(土著的) languages in Australia, the US,South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.
“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Riehl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s University in Kingston,Ontario.Huge factors are globalization and migration,as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl.“It seems particularly cruel,” she says,“that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu,a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189 km2,has 110 languages, the highest density(密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise.“Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says.Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022.Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all humanity,” said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.
28.What does the underlined phrase “final nail in the coffin” in paragraph 2 mean
A.The last straw. B.The last challenge.
C.The last possibility. D.The last opportunity.
29.Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To explain the main reason for language density.
B.To show the common features of endangered languages.
C.To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.
D.To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.
30.What does the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do
A.Support migrants to access local education.
B.Discourage people from massive migration.
C.Improve the living conditions of minority groups.
D.Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave
B.Lost for Words: Climate Crisis Brings Threat of Catastrophe
C.Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation
D.Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis

Do you love to play soccer If you do,then you’ve probably daydreamed from time to time about scoring the winning goal in a big game.Perhaps you’ve even pictured exactly how it would happen.A bicycle kick(倒钩球) can help you.
There are probably very few soccer players who haven’t dreamed of scoring a goal on a bicycle kick. It’s a feat even more impressive than a hat trick. You can try to describe a perfect bicycle kick, but somehow words struggle to convey the magic found in this unique combination of grace, beauty, and athletic prowess(超凡技术).In soccer, few moves can compare to the bicycle kick.It doesn’t happen often. So it’s not often that you’re able to witness one.
Given how special bicycle kicks are,it should come as no surprise that there’s some argument about exactly who invented the bicycle kick. Some soccer historians claim Ramon Unzaga invented the bicycle kick in 1914 in Talcahuano,Chile.Others believe the bicycle kick may have been invented as early as 1892 in Callao,Peru,in a game against British sailors.Even legendary Brazilian striker Leonidas claims to have invented the move in 1932.
Regardless of who invented the bicycle kick,it has been a special part of soccer for a century now.Only goalkeepers with very exceptional reflexes(反应) might be able to react quickly enough to block a shot from a bicycle kick. Why?Scientists claim it’s because of the physics involved in a bicycle kick.Since the player’s body is high above the ground and angled upward, the kicking leg has a greater distance than normal to travel before hitting the ball. The result:a forceful kick that sends the ball toward the goal more quickly than normal.
If you’re a soccer player, you’ve probably tried a bicycle kick a time or two. It’s not easy. But you’ll be able to see the basics broken down into steps by jumping online to check out how to do a bicycle kick.
32.Why does the author mention the dream of some soccer players in paragraph 1
A.To best explain a rule.
B.To introduce a concept.
C.To assess their health status.
D.To analyze their personality.
33.What can we say the bicycle kick compared to other moves
A.It’s so rare. B.It’s flexible.
C.It’s predictable. D.It’s graceful.
34.Which can describe stopping the shot for a keeper as the bicycle kick appears
A.A piece of cake. B.Controllable.
C.Nearly impossible. D.Appealing.
35.What might be discussed about a bicycle kick following the last paragraph
A.Its charm. B.Its complexity.
C.Its characteristic. D.Its procedure.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today’s stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. 36 Paparazzi(狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready.Newspapers and magazines all snap up to publish thrilling stories about their personal lives.
According to psychologist Christina Villareal, famous people worry constantly about their public appearance. 37 Eventually, they see themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names.
38 In the 4th century B.C.painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy.Local magazines and newspapers published his thrilling stories about his personal lives. They did much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.
Being a public figure today, however,is a lot more difficult than it used to be.Superstars cannot move about without being photographed or interrupted for a signature. 39 Then there is always the media to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever.
If fame is so troublesome, why aren’t all celebrities running away from it The answer is there are still ways to deal with it.Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities.Others actively contact related social media or websites to keep the public informed of their views in time when suffering from the pressure of public opinions. 40
A.Over time, they feel separated and alone.
B.They are at the center of much of the world’s attention.
C.These celebrities start to lose track of who they really are.
D.Actually, the calmer they keep, the less trouble they will run into.
E.The phenomenon of tracking famous people has been around for ages.
F.For example, they accidentally say something silly or do something ridiculous.
G.Inadequate social recognition makes it much harder for stars to keep a positive image.

My mother eyed me with suspicion(怀疑).I dared not look at her.Knowing that I was late for school five days continuously,I could not offer an acceptable explanation.I knew she did not believe that I had extra classes every day and arrived home after 5 pm.However, realizing she had little choice but to believe in me,she told me that dinner was in the refrigerator. She had to rush for her night shift at the local clinic.
Ever since we lost our dad in an accident,my mother became the breadwinner.I was the eldest among the four siblings(兄弟姐妹) and it fell upon my shoulder to ensure that they could become responsible adults.Besides helping mother with the housework,I regularly coached them in their studies.Thankfully, never once did I have to raise my voice or force them to complete their homework. But all of us missed dad very much.He was a model father and husband.Life was cruelly taken away from him at a very young age of 42.
However,my mother managed to pull through and found a job at the clinic. It was very tough on someone like her who had never worked before in her life. But money was scarce and there were five mouths to feed.Dad did not leave much behind. He never suspected he would die so young. We stopped dining out and had our meals mostly at home.We basically lived from hand to mouth. That’s when it dawned on me that I had to do my part for the family.I knew mother would not agree but I threw caution out of the window and managed to get a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant.I worked three hours a day and managed to bring home money so that my siblings and I could go out for occasional movies or meals.I was sure that mother suspected something. But she could not quite point the finger to the source of her suspicion.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
One day, while I was busy serving the customers,I was shocked to see mother standing opposite the counter.
Mother made me sit down. She was already crying,so were my siblings.

答案 B

One day, while I was busy serving the customers,I was shocked to see mother standing opposite the counter. So surprised was I that I dared not look into her eyes. She appeared shocked when I clumsily took her orders and saw her staggering to a table occupied by my siblings! My supervisor saw my worried expression and, knowing about my family situation, quickly volunteered to take over my duties.Slowly,I removed my apron and joined my family.
Mother made me sit down. She was already crying,so were my siblings. She covered my hands with hers and told me that she was grateful for my help.I could not hold back my tears and hugged her.How guilt-ridden I was!I told my mother that contributing financially to the family was the least I could do to relieve her burden. To my great relief,my beloved mother understood my situation and reassured me everything would be alright. It was then that I came to realize that I should not have hidden such a big secret from her.
