My love for animals began through watching wildlife documentaries when I was a kid.I went on to study Environmental Science at university, and became interested in marine(海洋的) biology when I did my master’s degree. That’s when I realized that there was a possibility to do more for Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, many people would associate marine life only with seafood, and few people would consider it as a part of nature to be appreciated.Although our marine life is highly diverse, our waters have been overfished for more than 40 years.Records show that decades ago, Hong Kong had such high production of seafood that it supported about 90% of the local demand.Today, at least 90% of the seafood we eat has to be imported to meet local demand, as our waters are so overfished that they can no longer support the local appetite.
Despite this shift, we are still a city in love with seafood—according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Hong Kong has the second highest annual seafood consumption per capita(人均) in Asia—but consumers are barely aware of where their seafood comes from and which species are threatened.
There is a lot of room for improvement in Hong Kong.Improving local fishery management policies and increasing the coverage of Marine Protected Areas, as well as conducting the relevant research to inform decisions, could move the city towards greater sustainability in this area. And consumers should avoid eating seafood that is on the threatened species list.As a general rule of thumb, if people are not sure what the species is, they should choose something else that they are more familiar with.
With the marine ecosystem already weak and easily destroyed, the greatest threat is continued ignorance and inaction. It is time for us to show that we can also be a part of the solution. If each person plays their part even for just one meal a day,Hong Kong would already be on its way to making considerable progress towards sustainable seafood consumption.
24.How does the author introduce overfishing in paragraph 2
A.By listing reasons.
B.By offering examples.
C.By giving exact figures.
D.By making comparisons.
25.What is true about HK people according to the passage
A.They all see marine life as a part of nature.
B.They consume 90% of the seafood in Asia.
C.They have a rather big appetite for seafood.
D.They are aware of the source of the seafood.
26.What does the author suggest people do when eating seafood
A.Keep off unfamiliar species.
B.Ignore dangerous species.
C.Choose endangered species.
D.Avoid non-threatened species.
27.What is the author’s purpose of writing this article
A.To stop consuming seafood.
B.To protect the marine ecosystem.
C.To improve local fishery management policies.
D.To criticize the overfishing situation in Hong Kong.

The wires, screens and batteries that make up our devices—not to mention the plastic, metal and other materials that package them—are filling up landfills. Some e-waste is relatively large: old phones and air conditioners, for instance.Other e-waste is more hidden, such as electronic single-use medical diagnostic kits, environmental sensors, and smart labels that contain one-off batteries and other equipment.
“It’s these small batteries that are big problems, ” says public health scientist Dele Ogunseitan.“Nobody really pays attention to where they end up.”
Researchers at the Cellulose & Wood Materials Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology(EMPA) are working to address this problem.Their new paper in Scientific Reports describes a paper battery developed from environmentally friendly materials that could eventually present a sustainable alternative to the more harmful batteries common in low-power devices.
The paper battery has the same key components as standard batteries but packages them differently.Like a typical chemical battery, it has a positively charged side called a cathode(正极), a negatively charged side called an anode(负极), and a conductive material called an electrolyte(电解质) between the two.A traditional battery’s components are packaged in plastic and metal; in the new battery, the anode and cathode are inks printed onto the front and back of a piece of paper. That paper is filled with salt, which dissolves(溶解) when the paper is dampened with water. The resulting saltwater solution acts as the electrolyte.
When the paper is dry, the battery is shelf-stable.Add just a couple of drops of water, however, and the salt dissolves, allowing electrons to flow.Once the paper is dampened, the battery becomes active within 20 seconds. The new battery’s operating performance declines as the paper dries. When the scientists rewet the paper during testing, the battery regained functionality and lasted an hour before beginning to dry out again.
28.What can we infer about small disposal batteries according to Dele Ogunseitan
A.They are no big problems.
B.They need to be addressed.
C.They should be made larger.
D.They are environmentally friendly.
29.What’s special about the new battery
A.It has a cathode and an anode.
B.It has different key components.
C.Its cathode and anode are printed on paper.
D.Its components are packaged in plastic and metal.
30.What is used to make the new battery start to operate
A.Salt. B.Metal.
C.Ink. D.Water.
31.In which section can we find the text

The researchers drew a conclusion that orphaned(成为孤儿的) elephants would be more stressed out than non-orphans.There’s a lot of evidence that the mother-child bond helps reduce stress in animals, which has been demonstrated previously in rats and birds, says the study leader Jenna Parker.Elephants have complicated social structures and deep family bonds.Because orphaned elephants in the same region die at a higher rate than elephants with living mothers, it seemed like a no-brainer that surviving orphans would be stressed out.
The team, however, made an unexpected finding: There really wasn’t a difference in the stress hormone(荷尔蒙) levels of orphaned and non-orphaned elephants, as long as they lived with family members, such as aunts, cousins, or brothers and sisters.Elephants—even the orphans—that lived in groups with fellows of their own age turned out to be under less stress than those that didn’t.
Parker recalls two orphans in the study, Frida and Rothko.“Frida had a non-functional left ear and Rothko had a non-functional right ear, and they were inseparable,” she says.“It was as though they had at least one good set of ears as long as they were together!” The findings also fit with previous social research in African elephants, Parker says.“Orphans increase interaction with their age mates after their mother’s death.” She notes that dominance is structured by age in elephants: Older elephants may outrank younger elephants when it comes to food, for example, but elephants of the same age are generally equals.
With human-wildlife conflict and drought threats to elephants in the region, the findings published in Communications Biology offer a new insight into how having a strong fellow group may contribute to elephants’ survival. This information could also help recovery facilities that take in orphaned elephants set the animals up for a successful future in the wild—releasing them in large groups of bonded fellows, for example.“The bottom line here is that elephants need elephants,” says Parker.“And when the worst happens, like losing a mother, some find new ways to survive and grow happily.”
32.What can be inferred from paragraph 1
A.Losing parents makes no difference to elephants.
B.Living with mothers leads to heavy pressure.
C.Family bonds are significant for elephants’ life.
D.Orphaned elephants are more independent.
33.Which statement may Parker agree with
A.Non-orphans outrank orphans in elephants.
B.Orphaned elephants are in need of their age mates.
C.Older elephants tend to attend to younger elephants.
D.Orphaned elephants prefer interaction with older elephants.
34.What does the author think of the team’s research findings
A.They’re baseless.
B.They’re novel.
C.They’re original.
D.They’re predictable.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Hunting and Drought Are Major Threats to Elephants
B.Human Protection Helps Orphaned Elephants Survive
C.Living with Older Elephants May Contribute to Survival
D.Friends May Be Key to Stress Relief for Orphaned Elephants

Tai chi has been studied scientifically in recent years.Evidence suggests that tai chi may offer numerous benefits beyond stress reduction.Wondering how to get started in tai chi? 36
A tai chi instructor can teach you some specific positions and how to control your breathing. 37 Although tai chi is slow and gentle without side effects, it’s possible to get injured if you don’t know how to do tai chi properly. It’s possible you could strain(拉伤) your muscles or overdo it when first learning, or you could worsen an existing condition.
38 There are 100 standard training programs for instructors. So check an instructor’s training and experience, get recommendations if possible, and make sure that you’re comfortable with his or her approach. 39 But if you like the social element, consider sticking with group tai chi classes.
Under the guidance of the tai chi instructor, you may find it helpful to practice tai chi in the same place and at the same time every day to develop a routine. 40 You can even draw on the comforting mind-body concepts of tai chi without performing the actual movements if you get stuck in stressful situations—a traffic jam or a contentious(争论不休的) work meeting, for instance.
If you want to reap the greatest stress reduction and other health benefits from tai chi, just find an instructor and practice it regularly!
A.An instructor also can teach you how to practice tai chi safely.
B.Keep in mind that tai chi instructors don’t have to be licensed.
C.Some qualified web-based distance education is also an option.
D.Taking classes is one of the best ways to become a tai chi instructor.
E.You can consider seeking guidance from qualified tai chi instructors.
F.Eventually, you may feel confident enough to do tai chi on your own.
G.But if your schedule is flexible, do tai chi whenever you have a few minutes.

Ezri and Oliver were so keen to climb the mountain that they begged to join their dad Brandon for another hike.Just after 8 a.m.on a beautiful Sunday morning, they set off.Brandon’s backpack held his phone, Clif bars(能量棒), packets of apple sauce, apples, water bottles and fishing gear.
Brandon had planned a varied route up the mountain. The winding upward slope was fun and uneventful.Near the top, thick snow blanketed the path.Excitedly, the kids raced across the hard surface. They shared the second-last Clif bar and rested for an hour.Brandon looked around. His phone showed 1:30 p.m.and no signals.
When the kids started down, Brandon said, “You guys really want to find those fishing lakes, don’t you?”
“Oh, yes!” Ezri said.So they took an unfamiliar route down the other side of the mountain.
By the time Brandon realized the path had become an animal trail alongside a stream, it made sense to keep following it.The stream sang to them, and they kept following it down.Mid afternoon, when the sun disappeared behind heavy gray clouds, they suddenly felt lost, cold and hungry. For half an hour they cautiously moved downward until they reached a steep cliff(悬崖) edge. The stream became a noisy, six-metre waterfall.Mist enveloped them as the water raced over a huge rock.
Brandon cursed(咒骂) himself for taking an unknown route down. They held hands and inched down until Oliver slid on a loose rock and all three went flying.
Brandon wiped blood from his forehead and gathered his senses. Was anyone hurt Oliver, crying and shivering, seemed okay.Ezri was weeping, but she too appeared uninjured.Brandon himself didn’t feel anything worse than the wound on his forehead. The backpack was stuck in the rocks six metres away.He saw no use trying to find it back. The air was cold and getting colder. They were wet and tired.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

Join us at 7 pm on Wednesday in the Alaska Zoo Gateway Building for the program focused on wolves. Our original presenter for the lecture,James White, had a schedule conflict,so we have substituted another speaker.Stephanie Hartman, zoo educator and former zookeeper, will tell the story of the zoo’s wolf pack, from their arrival through to today.Learn about their growth and training, and how zoo staff manage their care as individuals and as a pack. There will be a guest appearance by Shannon Jensen,Zoo Curator. While we do apologize for the substitution in presenters,we know this will be a great program for all who attend.
The lecture will be free to the public. As an additional feature for this lecture,we are offering an optional wolf encounter for people to go and see the wolves up close after the lecture for a fee of US$5 per person.Funds support both the Zoo and the conservation and research efforts of the Midnight Sun American Association of Zookeepers Chapter. The encounter fee may be paid at the admissions entrance after the lecture.Encounters will be done by multiple handlers and wolves stationed in separate areas,to provide a small group for each location.
We hope you will join us for this last lecture of the week!

答案 C

A Clothes and Quilt Folding Competition
参考范文
A Clothes and Quilt Folding Competition
In order to develop students’ basic life skills, a clothes and quilt folding competition was held in our school last Sunday.
All the students participated in the competition. As was required, participants must fold their clothes and quilts quickly and neatly. The competition was extremely intense and in the end, 10 participants stood out as winners.
In my opinion, the competition is of great significance. Not only does it improve our labor skills, but also it makes us experience the fun of labor and understand the importance of labor.I hope similar competitions will be held more often in our school.
