Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a name that every lover of English literature will always remember and cherish.He is the pen father of the extraordinary detective Sherlock Holmes and a number of detective stories.

Doyle’s next creation was the delightfully violent Professor Challenger.The Lost World which involved Professor Challenger was an immediate success.Finally，because of his wife’s illness，Doyle decided to devote his life to his previous work rather than writing.This was the time when he decided to end the stories of Sherlock Holmes，which he did in The Final Problem.

A new study shows that rising levels of planet warming gasses may reduce important nutrients in food crops.
Other studies have shown that higher temperatures from climate change and weather extremes will reduce food production.But scientists are finding that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other planet warming gasses threaten food quality.
Researchers studied the effects of one such gas—carbon dioxide—on rice.They grew 18 kinds of rice in fields in China and Japan in a controlled environment.They set carbon dioxide levels to what scientists are predicting for our planet by the end of the century.They found that the resulting rice crops had lower than normal levels of vitamins, minerals and protein.
Rice grown under high carbon dioxide conditions had, on average, 13 to 30 percent lower levels of four B vitamins and 10 percent less protein.The crops also had 8 percent less iron and 5 percent less zinc(锌) than rice grown under normal conditions.
The researchers said the effects of planet warming gasses would be most severe for the poorest citizens in some of the least developed countries.These people generally eat the most rice and have the least complex diets, they noted.Scientists estimated that almost 150 million people might be at risk of having too little protein or zinc in their diet by 2050.
One scientist, Sam Myers of Harvard University of Massachusetts, US, said that findings like this are an example of the surprises climate change creates.“My concern is, there are many more surprises to come，” he said.
Myers noted that pollution, loss of some species, destruction of forests, and other human activities are likely to produce unexpected problems.He said that you cannot completely change all the natural systems that living organisms have grown to depend on over millions of years without having effects come back to affect our own health.
The new study suggests a way to lower the nutritional harm of climate change—to grow different forms of rice that have shown to be more resistant to higher carbon dioxide levels.

A new study suggests that mindfulness education—lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body—can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students’ ability to stay engaged，helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.
After finding that students who self reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades，researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.
They designed a study focusing on sixth graders in a Boston school.The study showed that sixth graders who participated in an eight week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn’t.Practicing mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment，expanding students’ capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.
Four times a week，instructors from Calmer Choice，a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education，taught the group techniques and led them through practices，like focusing on a rock for a minute，then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock.Another group of sixth graders took computer coding during that time instead.The students were randomly assigned between the groups.
At the end of the eight weeks，the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education，and better able to practice self control.And their amygdalae，the part of the brain that controls emotion，responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work，suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli，or，in other words，that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus.The group who attended coding classes didn’t see the same benefits.
The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students’ attention skills，as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress.The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body，hurting students’ ability to succeed.

For the most part, Hank, a two year old cat, is a homebody and for good reason.But on November 6th, Bushong, his owner, spotted Hank resting on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.
Bushong believed Hank got frightened by some dogs.The more scared he got, the higher he climbed.“Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but they aren’t that good at climbing down，” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance(HRA)．
Bushong then asked the HRA to help, but it was no easy task.HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help because of safety concerns.Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance.Next she reached out to a local tree company, Casey Trees.But the crew said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree.Bushong became very sad.
Then neighbors came to help.Ed Baptiste, whose tree Hank had climbed, let Bushong sit in his backyard and called to Hank.Another neighbor donated a can of fish, hoping it might attract the cat to come down.Nearby dog owners took their pets on walks instead of letting them out in their yards to avoid further frightening Hank.Another neighbor suggested Bushong call a local business, which had a tall ladder.Unfortunately, their 42 foot ladder proved too short.
By day five, nothing had worked.That’s when another neighbor suggested creating a pulley(滑轮) system by throwing a sandbag attached to the rope to a branch higher than Hank.It will form a pulley system as the sandbag hangs down by gravity.Then raise a basket with some of the owner’s personal items.The cat may be attracted by the familiar scents and climb into the basket.
