1.Know about how Yu Xiaoming and Judy Clark celebrate meaningful birthdays.
2.Talk about students' ideas about how to celebrate their birthdays.

Step 1 Lead in
Students brainstorm their experiences of celebrating a birthday.

Step 2 Before reading(1a)
Work on 1a
1.Show some pictures of birthday activities.
2.Ask students to talk about something about the birthday activities according to the pictures and share in class.
3.Ask students to read the birthday activities in 1a and ask them to tick the activities they do on their birthdays.

Step 3 While reading(1b~1d)
Work on 1b
1.Ask students to read the posts from an online forum and choose the main idea of the posts.
T:Judy Clark and Yu Xiaoming are talking about their ways to celebrate their birthdays in an online discussion forum.Read the two posts and choose the main idea.
2.Ask students to share the answer and speak out the reason.
Work on 1c
1.Ask students to read the posts again and complete the table.
T:When are Judy and Xiaoming's birthdays?What do they usually do to celebrate their birthdays.Read the text carefully and fill in the table.
2.Ask students to share the answers and the teacher helps to correct if necessary.
(Students must share in complete sentences with the sentence patterns:Judy's…is on…She usually enjoys the cake and opens the gifts…)
Work on 1d
1.Ask students to read the posts again and answer the questions.
2.Choose four or five students to share the answers in class.
3.The teacher summarizes other meaningful ways to celebrate birthdays.
