Luban is a great carpenter in Chinese history. During his life, he invented and improved a number of carpenter's tools.
One day, a young man passed by a red gate. He held up an axe and yelled: “This axe is really good. I can make the greatest furniture with it.” Hearing this, an old man pointed at the gate and asked him: “Can you make a better gate than this one ”
“I was the student of Lu Ban! It’s a piece of cake to make a better one!” The young man said without thinking.
“But the gate was made by Lu Ban himself!” The old man said. All the people around burst out laughing.
This idiom story reminds us to be humble and to learn from those who are more experienced and knowledgeable.
中文大意班门弄斧
鲁班是中国历史上著名的能工巧匠，他一生中发明和改进了多种木匠工具。
一天，有个年轻人路过一扇大红门，他举着一把斧头喊道：“我的这把斧头可是了不起，我能用它做出最好的家具。”听到这句话，一位老人指着大门问他：“你能做出一扇更好的大门吗？”
年轻人不假思索地说道：“我可是鲁班的徒弟，做一扇更好的门对我来说简直就是小菜一碟。”“但这扇门就是鲁班本人做的呀！”老人说道。周围的人群中顿时爆发出一阵笑声。
这个故事提醒人们要保持谦逊，并向拥有更多经验和知识的人学习。

There once was a man who wanted to go to the south, but his carriage was heading north.
A passer-by asked him: “Now that you are going to the south, why is your carriage heading north ”
The man answered: “My horse is good at running, my cart driver has excellent driving skills, and I have enough money. In any case, I am able to get to my destination.”
The man didn't realize that if he was heading a wrong direction; the faster his horse ran, the further he would be away from his destination.
This story is always used to describe a stupid behavior that prevents one from reaching the goal.

从前有个年轻人乘坐马车去南方，但是他的马车却朝着北方行驶。一个路人看到了问他：“既然你要去南方，为什么你的车子要往北走呢？”年轻人回答道：“我的马善于奔跑，我的马车夫也有很高超的驾驶技术，我呢，又有充足的钱。无论如何，我都会到达目的地的。”这个人没有意识到，如果他朝着一个错误的方向走，他的马跑得越快，他离目的地就会越远。

More Haste, Less Speed
Once upon a time, there was a farmer. He was always worried about his crops. Everyday he went to see them. But the crops grew much slower than he expected. The farmer was very anxious. Suddenly, A good idea came to his mind. He rushed towards the fields and pulled up the crops one by one.
Looking at the 'taller' crops, he couldn’t wait to tell his family this good news. 'I am exhausted, but you know, my efforts were not in vain. I helped all the little crops grow faster.' the farmer said joyfully.His son was astonished. He ran to the fields in a hurry, but it was too late. All the crops were dying.
This story tells us that anxiety and impatience do not speed things up: they make them even slower.
中文大意拔苗助长
从前有一位农夫，他总是为田里的庄稼发愁，每天他都要去田里转悠，但是庄稼长得比他想的慢多了。农夫很着急，突然他想到了一个办法，他立刻冲到了田里，把庄稼挨个往上拔高了点。
看着“长高”了的庄稼，农夫迫不及待要告诉家人这个好消息。“可把我累坏了，好在没白忙活。庄稼在我的帮助下长得快多了。”农夫兴高采烈地说。
农夫的儿子大吃一惊，他赶忙跑到了田里，但是已经晚了，庄稼都蔫掉了。
这个故事告诉我们，忧虑和急躁解决不了任何问题，有时只会让情况更糟糕。

相似表达
英文里面也有很多类似的表达，比如，Haste makes waste；More haste, less speed. 这两句习语既可以翻译成“欲速则不达”，也可以翻译成我们今天学习的“拔苗助长”，因为它们的寓意是一样的。
或者我们还可以说，A watched pot never boils. 当你站在锅边时，会感觉水热得很慢，总也烧不开，就像故事中的农夫天天在田里转悠，总觉得庄稼一点都没变，所以这句习语也是劝我们要耐心等待，我们还可以把A watched pot never boils翻译成“心急吃不了热豆腐”，是不是很形象呢！
