Some people may think that empty water bottles and milk boxes are trash(废物),but to brothers Rohit and Sidharth Srinivasan, they offer a chance to teach STEM(Science,Technology,Engineering,Mathematics). They use these and other everyday things to create Trashbots, which is an affordable robotics platform(平台) for schools.“The name came from the idea that we wanted our products to be as easy to get as trash,” Rohit said.“That’s what real engineering is about—taking things you find around you and reusing them to create something new.”
Rohit and Sidharth created Trashbots while they were still in high school. They got the idea to make something that would help more kids learn about robotics while doing their volunteering activity in India.“We’d been spending every winter break traveling to India,” Sidharth said.“We’d be going there and teaching kids computer science and math activities.”
During those trips, they learned STEM education was impossible for many of those children. Many robotics kits cost an arm and a leg.Rohit and Sidharth wanted to help solve the problem. Thus they developed an affordable basic robotics kit. They also made a computer program to go with it and a plan for teachers to use in class.
The computer program helps kids learn how to program at a young age. There is also a plan for teachers to use to help students learn STEM subjects. It has over 100 hours of lessons for children from kindergarten to high school. The lesson plan makes it easy for teachers to teach and for kids to learn. In the process, kids learn more about real-life engineering and solve problems with their own hands.
“In life,we are not always given all the parts we need to build everything perfectly,” Rohit said.“Instead,we’re often handed usual and incomplete parts,so we need to find out how to make them work together. And that’s where Trashbots came from.”

Tall,long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies.Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However,a Tennessee zoo made headlines recently after it welcomed one of the world’s most uncommon giraffes.
On July 31,2023,a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated giraffe(网纹长颈鹿),one of the four different kinds of giraffes.Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots,a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. At six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother’s care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such as eating rocks.
Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan.A giraffe’s pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.
“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild.Being single-colored,she may not be able to hide quite as well,” said Mr David Bright, who runs the zoo.“It will easily be a key target for poachers(偷猎者) because she’s so unusual.”
Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018,they were officially listed as “threatened”.Thirty-five years ago, there were 36,000 reticulated giraffes. Now,the number has been cut by more than 50%.Only about 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain.
This brown giraffe’s birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild.By supporting efforts like this,we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.
28.What do we know about the spots of giraffes
A.They help protect giraffes.
B.They are the same pattern.
C.They look like giraffes’ footprints.
D.They appear on giraffes occasionally.
29.What makes the young giraffe born at Brights Zoo special
A.Its extremely large size.
B.Its light brown fur.
C.Its unusual eating habit.
D.Its absence of spots.
30.What does the underlined word “imperiled” mean in paragraph 5
A.Recognized. B.Endangered.
C.Doubled. D.Balanced.
31.Which word can best describe the birth of the young giraffe
A.Awkward. B.Worrying.
C.Meaningful. D.Foreseeable.

Humans and horses have enjoyed strong working relationships for nearly 10,000 years. Can these age-old relationships teach us something about building robots?Researchers at the University of Florida carried out research and said yes.“As we work to improve how humans communicate with robots,I thought why not learn from our partnership with horses to help solve the problem of natural interaction(互动) between humans and robots?” said Eakta Jain,an associate professor of computer and information science and engineering.
Looking at our history with animals to help shape our future with robots is nothing new.But Jain and her colleagues are the first to bring together engineering and robot researchers and horse experts and trainers to do on-the-ground field studies with the animals.
Jain first reached out to Joel McQuagge, who managed the UF Horse Teaching Unit.He provided Jain with full access,so Jain spent months observing classes. She interviewed and observed horse experts, including horse trainers and owners.Jain’s notes resulted in findings and design ideas that can be applied by robot designers.
“Some of the findings are easy to visualize(可视化),while others are not very specific,” Jain said.“ For example,we learned that a horse speaks with its body. You can see its ears pointing to where something caught its attention. We could build similar types of expressions without speech in our robots, like ears that point to something visual in the car when there’s a person walking on that side of the street.”
A groundbreaking finding is the sense of respect. When a trainer works with a horse,he looks for signs of respect from the horse for its human partner.“We don’t typically think about respect in the situation of human-robot interaction,” Jain says.“Can we design behaviors similar to what the horse uses? Will that make the human more willing to work with the robot?”
32.Why does the author mention horses in the first paragraph
A.To provide examples.
B.To make comparisons.
C.To introduce the topic.
D.To support his argument.
33.How did Jain carry out her research
A.She interviewed engineers and robot designers.
B.She worked with horse experts for observations.
C.She discussed her design with robotics and horse experts.
D.She checked historical records of human-horse partnerships.
34.What lesson can robot designers draw from Jain’s notes
A.Body language can be designed into robots.
B.Early warnings could be given if something happens.
C.Robots may hardly understand non-speech instructions.
D.Robots can perform better than horses in locating things.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.Study the Influences of Robots on Horse Training
B.Improve the Interaction Between Robots and Humans
C.Explore the Relationships Between Humans and Horses
D.Build Better Robots Through the Experience with Horses

A simple and common way to water plants is to hold a garden pipe and let the water fall down directly on the plants and soil. This is a good choice that doesn’t waste water. It also can help prevent plant disease. But a garden pipe isn’t the only way to water your plants.
The When and How of Watering
36 This lets the water go deeply into the soil before the weather gets too hot.If you water late in the day,the water will just evaporate(蒸发) from the surface. If you water in the evening, the plants stay too wet overnight.
How you water is just as important as when you water. If you water quickly every day,it doesn’t help the roots, which can spread over 30 centimeters into the soil.Water the soil less often, but deeply.Be careful when watering very dry soil because the water will just run off without getting into the soil. 37
Collect and Reuse Water
One way to help keep costs low for watering is to use used water.Instead of emptying water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants. 38 You can also catch and use rainwater.
Choose Native Plants
Most gardeners just think about which plants look good and the plants’ sunlight needs. 39 Drought-resistant plants shouldn’t be overwatered when trying to keep thirstier plants watered.
It’s also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants are likely to be resistant to drought. 40 After that, they can live on just rainwater except for during times of extreme heat.
A.Put more pipes around the plants.
B.But watering needs should be considered, too.
C.They just need watering for the first two years.
D.Just make sure the water does not have salt in it.
E.The best time to water your plants is in the morning.
F.Growing plants in containers usually needs much water.
G.Water your plants slowly and make sure the water is taken in by earth.

(2024·河北张家口高一期末)
On a bright Saturday,my peaceful lunchtime was suddenly interrupted when my dad surprised me with an unplanned idea.I couldn’t hide my annoyance as what was supposed to be a relaxing Saturday turned into a day focused on football—a sport I wasn’t very excited about.
Many of my friends loved sports, while I preferred to find comfort in the pages of a good book rather than run around on a football court. My lack of interest resulted in average performance on the team, and I often felt like I was a problem for both my coach and teammates.
Things changed last week when our coach announced a coming match against the champions scheduled for a month later. The realization that this important game would have a big audience only made me more anxious. The fear of possibly letting down the team weighed on me.
Determined to make a positive impact,I decided to practice hard every day.My motivation came from wanting to help the team and to overcome the self-doubt affecting my performance.
As the match day approached,my teammates seemed unsure about including me in the lineup(阵容).I wouldn’t have minded sitting out,but the situations were different. With one player short, they reluctantly(不情愿地) included me,and The Thunder Strikers, our team, stepped onto the field to enjoy cheers from the crowd.
The pressure was intense. The game started, and within the ten minutes,I received a warning. Before long, the referee showed me a second yellow card, forcing me to leave the field. When I got back into the game, the score was tied, and the next goal would decide the winner.
As the ball came toward me,I felt a bit scared. My teammates seemed tired, and the other team really wanted to win. With great courage,I kicked the ball. The opponents(对手),maybe not expecting much from me because of my earlier struggles, were surprised when the ball went past the goalkeeper.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
The Thunder Strikers won!
After this win, football became different for me.
