五、阅读理解
Once, a king had a great highway built for his people. Just before it was opened to the public, the king decided to have a contest (竞赛). He invited his people to take part in the contest. Their challenge was to see who could travel the highway the best.
On the day of the contest, some people came to the highway in fine clothing; some had fancy hairstyles or brought great food. Some young men came in their sports clothes and ran along the highway. People travelled the highway all day, but each one, when he or she completed the trip, complained to the king that there was a large pile of stones in the way that had blocked his or her travels.
At the end of the day, a lonely traveller crossed the finishing line and walked over to the king. He was tired and dirty, but he showed the king great respect and handed him a bag of gold. He explained, “I stopped along the way to clear a pile of stones that was blocking the road. This bag of gold was under it all. I want you to return it to its rightful owner.”
The king replied, “You are the rightful owner. You’ve earned this gold, for you won my contest.”

The most valuable gift I have ever received was a photo album from my best friend Kevin.
Kevin and I were classmates for all six years of primary school. We both had the same interests, so we always had a lot of things to talk about. It is wonderful to have such a good friend.
However, last summer, Kevin had to move to another city because of his father's job. Then he gave me a photo album. "It has photos of the memorable events we have experienced together. I've also written some notes under each photo," he said. I was deeply moved.

Dear Jim,
Welcome to China. Here are some customs that you should know in China. Hope I can help you.
In China, when people meet for the first time, they usually say hello and shake hands with each other. If someone invites you to his home, it’s polite to take gifts such as some fruit and flowers. But you mustn’t give a clock. While you are eating, you mustn’t speak to others with food in your mouth. What’s more, you’d better not eat up all the food because it is bad manners.
So much for this. I hope you will enjoy your stay in China!
Yours,
Daming
