It’s a warm summer afternoon. You’re cooking up the catch of the day over a campfire. Suddenly, a few raindrops fall on your arms, and before you know it, the sky opens up. Then you hear what sounds like thunder in the distance. What should you do Your tent is close by and would offer shelter (庇护) from the pouring rain. There’s a campsite picnic shelter a few minutes down the path. And then you remember that your car is parked down the road. What’s your safest choice to make sure you and your families are safe
It’s a common question for many hikers and campers, especially when they are camping during summer months. Heading to your car is almost always the safest choice. On the one hand, your tent and a picnic shelter will keep you dry, but they offer little or no protection against lightning. Your car, on the other hand, will keep you dry and protect you from lightning strikes. Protecting yourself against possible lightning strikes is very important; lightening kills an average of 62 people in the US each year. If you keep all of the windows and doors closed in your car, you’ll be able to return to your campsite safely.
Of course, if you’re going backpacking (背包旅行), not car camping, and you’re deep in the woods, your car won’t be a good choice. So, what should you do if your car is far away and there’s no other safe shelter nearby First, you’ll have to make sure that tree branches or other objects don’t fall on you or your campsite. In June 2023, Curtis Whitson, Krystal Ramirez, and their son Hunter decided to go on a four-day hiking and camping trip along central California’s Arroyo Seco River. Things went well for the first two days. On June 16, Whitson led the trip to a waterfall.
Whitson planned for the group to rappel (绕绳下降)down the side of the waterfall along the river. However, when the hikers reached the top of the waterfall, Whitson realized that unlike his trip through the area before, the water currents (水流)were too strong. To make matters worse, their rope was missing.
Since going back the way they had come was dangerous as well, they tried to find other routes to get around the waterfall but kept hitting dead ends. There was no other way out.
The three tried shouting from behind the huge rocks each time they heard voices and even threw a stick. When neither worked, Whitson decided to carve (刻)a “GET HELP” message on the side of his water bottle and threw it across the waterfall in the hope that someone would find it. Fearing the carved message was easy to miss, he also put a dated note inside the bottle. Then Whitson and his family went back up the river to a small beach to camp out for the night. Before settling down, they spread out their blue carpet in an open place and spelled out “SOS” using white rocks. To make sure it could be seen at night, they used a headlight to lighten the sign. Sometime after midnight, the three were awakened by a welcome sound—a helicopter flying overhead. Soon after, someone shouted over the loudspeaker, “This is Search and Rescue. You have been found.”
Shortly after being picked up, Whitson was told that two hikers had discovered their water bottle and, upon seeing the message for help, reported it to the officials. Whitson said, “They didn’t leave their names or phone numbers. They just did what was right in their heart, and took it seriously. They couldn’t have done it faster or more selflessly, and I can’t thank them enough.”

“Are you going to Seattle ” an anxious-looking woman asked a female traveler at the Amtrak Airport in Sacramento. “No, I’m going to Eugene,” the traveler replied. “Oh, I was hoping you could watch out for my daughter. She’s never been on a plane alone before.”
Now, as I am quite a seasoned plane traveler, I know that seats and cars are supplied by the destination. So I came up to the woman and her frightened-looking daughter, telling the woman that her daughter could sit with me and that I would take care of her during the journey.
The plane had arrived 25 minutes late, and people walked in line to get their seats. The conductor wanted to know if there were people traveling together, so I went to the front of the line with the girl and we were arranged to sit next to each other. Once on board, I showed her where to put her package, and took her to the bathroom area. Then we settled down to sleep. In the morning, I showed her the dining room and bought her a drink. She became comfortable enough to do what most 15-year-olds do: talk and text on her mobile phone.
Throughout the trip, I made sure she picked up her ID, which had fallen out of her backpack, and some money, which had fallen into the crack (缝隙) of the reclining seat, and continuously kept an eye on her. I hope someone takes her under their wing when she flies back to Sacramento.
I do hope that kindness will spread around the world through these ways. We’re conditioned to think that our lives go on with great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped (包裹) in what others may consider a small one.
