A 10- year- old swimmer with sky high dreams and a name to match them has broken a record previously (先前地) held by Olympian Michael Phelps.
Clark Kent Apuada, whose friends call him “Superman”, swam the 100 meter butterfly in 1:09.38 at the Far Western Long Course Championships in his home state of California. That’s a second faster than the record Phelps set at the same event in 1995 with a time of 1:10.48 in the same category (类别) of boys under 10.
Clark, a rising fifth grader who is Filipino American, told HuffPost he’s been dreaming about breaking Phelps’ record ever since he started swimming competitively at age 7. “I was so encouraged,” Clark said about his win. “I was so happy that I was able to beat that record.”
Phelps competed in his first Olympics at age 15. He went on to become the most decorated Olympian in history, with 28 medals in total. “Everyone in the crowd was excited when they realized what a special swim they had just seen when we announced the long standing record had been broken,” Cindy Rowland, Pacific Swimming’s director, wrote in an email.
Clark won first place for all the swimming events he competed in at this year’s Far Western Championships. Pacific Swimming, an association (协会) that is part of USA Swimming, organizes the Far Western Long Course Championships. Cynthia Apuada, Clark’s mother, said that her child seems to be “living by his name at this point”.
Asked about the champion swimmer’s unusual name, she said she’d always loved the name Clark. And her husband’s favorite superhero just happened to be Superman. So when their child was born, they decided to give him the name “Clark Kent”. The nickname “Superman” appeared naturally.

Joe DiMaggio was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. A three-time winner of the Most Valuable Player award, DiMaggio was selected to the Major League All-Star team in each of his thirteen seasons. He is best known for his remarkable performance during the 1941 season.
I recently heard a little-known story about how DiMaggio acquired his exceptional ability. As the story goes, a reporter was interviewing DiMaggio at his home and asked him what it felt like to be such a “natural hitter”. Without saying a word, he dragged the reporter downstairs. In the shadows of the basement, DiMaggio picked up a bat and began to repeat a series of practice swings. Before each swing, he would call out a particular pitch such as “fastball, low and away” or “slider, inside” and adjust his approach accordingly.
Once he finished the routine, DiMaggio set the bat down, picked up a piece of chalk, and scratched a tally mark on the wall. Then he flicked on the lights to reveal thousands of tally marks covering the basement walls. Supposedly, DiMaggio then looked at the reporter and said, “Don’t you ever tell me that I’m a natural hitter again.”
We love stories like this — stories that highlight how remarkable success is the product of effort and perseverance. In recent years, the study of hard work has developed into a scientific pursuit. Experts have begun to refer to focused and effortful training as “deliberate practice” and it is widely considered to be the recipe for success.
There is no doubt that deliberate practice can be the recipe for success, but only under certain conditions. If we are serious about maximizing our potential, then we need to know when deliberate practice makes the difference between success and failure and when it doesn’t. Before we can capture the power of deliberate practice, we need to understand its limitations. In highly competitive fields, deliberate practice is often necessary, but not sufficient for success.
5.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.DiMaggio’s life experience. B.DiMaggio’s personal struggle.
C.The great popularity of DiMaggio. D.The great achievement of DiMaggio.

A.Perseverance leads to success. B.Genius comes from hard work.
C.Your hard work will pay off in the end. D.Diligence makes up for a lack of talent.
8.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to deliberate practice
A.Doubtful. B.Confused.
C.Objective. D.Ambiguous.
French officials are preparing to offer flying taxi services to people attending the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024.
Some air taxi developers attended the recent Paris Air Show to show off their products and seek industry support. One of the companies in attendance was Germany’s Volocopter, which plans to offer a flying taxi service during the Olympics.
But so far, no air taxi maker has received government approval to launch service in France. Volocopter hopes to be the first. But the company still needs to run its aircraft through intensive weather tests and provide thousands of pages of documentation to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. “It’s not a walk in the park to be the first,” company chief Dirk Hoke told the Reuters news agency.
Robin Riedel co-leads the Center for Future Mobility at the business advisory company McKinsey. She told Reuters that companies formed to support air taxi projects have lost about 30 percent of their value in recent years. In addition, many investors have decided to put money into drones instead of flying taxis.
Industry experts say they fear these struggles could signal more financial problems for many other companies involved in air taxi development.
In the beginning, air taxi trips are likely to be short and costly. This is because limited battery technology restricts the distance and number of paying passengers the aircraft can carry. The long-term success of air taxis will also be dependent on effective systems to manage all the air traffic using the skies. Experts say such systems will need new technology to provide safety for all flyers. As the industry progresses, the number of air taxis and drones is expected to reach into the millions.
Hoke said that one thing is sure, “It will be a total new experience for the people.” He added, “Twenty years later when someone looks back at what changed based on that, and then they call it a revolution. And I think we are at the edge of the next revolution.”
9.What did Dirk Hoke think of their applying to offer flying taxi services in France
A.It would be an easy job.
B.It would take much trouble.
C.It would probably be refused in the end.
D.It would be supported by the government.
10.What do we know about companies formed to support air taxi projects
A.They will attract more investors.
B.They will put more money into drones.
C.They aren’t successful economically.
D.They win confidence from industry experts.
11.What is Paragraph 6 mainly about
A.The problems with flying taxis.
B.The advantages of flying taxis.
C.The measures to guarantee air taxis’ safety.
D.The major factors in air taxis’ future success.
12.What was Dirk Hoke’s attitude to the development of flying taxis
A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic.
C.Uncertain. D.Concerned.

Pilates, yoga and the running machine get all the attention when it comes to popular ways to stay healthy. There is, however, a more humble exercise that might not be so attractive, but has all the benefits—walking.
Certified fitness professional Jolynn Jaekel explains, “What I love about walking is that anyone can do it at any age and any fitness level. Plus, it is good for your heart, your head and your wallet.”
A recent report details the health benefits of walking. The report found that walking regularly to fulfill the 150 minutes of moderate physical exercise every week, recommended by the UK’s chief medical officer, could save 37, 000 lives each year. Scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that quick walking reduces the risk of heart disease more effectively than running. They observed participants aged between 18 and 80 over a six year period and found that walking reduced the risk of heart disease by 9.3%, while running reduced it by 4.5%. And there is even more good news: 30 minutes of quick walking over five days could help you sleep easily, according to research by Oregon State University. The study by the university showed that walking helped participants sleep better and feel more alert during the day. The sooner you get started, the sooner you’ll notice the differences in your mind and body. So, go out for your 30 minute walk in a nearby park or green space.

You probably consider calorie (卡路里) burning with training. You can get great calorie burning effects with the following exercises.Running
Running is one of the best calorie burners out there. An average person can burn anywhere from 500 to 1,000 calories in one hour of running. Speed and pace are all factors that can affect calorie burning. But running uses every muscle group in the body, allowing you to burn more calories.High Intensity Interval (高强度间歇运动) Training (HIIT)
If you want intensity, HIIT is right for you. This physical exercise involves working hard in intervals, then resting. Because your heart rate will stay at a high level, you’ll burn more calories in less time. On average, a person will burn 400 to 600 calories in 30 minutes.Jumping rope
This childhood activity can actually do wonders for your health. Jumping rope is great for strengthening the lower and upper body while training your balance and coordination (协调能力), because your mind has to work while you jump. Jumping rope can burn 600 to 1,000 calories in an hour.Swimming
Swimming is a low-intensity form of exercise that also uses muscle groups of your body. In just 30 minutes of swimming, an average person can burn 200 to 300 calories. Swimming also helps to shape body, control blood pressure, and increase strength—all great reasons for you to jump into the water.
24.Which kind of exercise burns the most calories in an hour
A.Running. B.Swimming.
C.Jumping rope. D.High Intensity Interval Training.
25.Who may also be interested in the third exercise
A.Those who want to train their mind. B.Those who want to have good balance.

How to Sleep Better
If you’re having trouble getting good sleep through the night (turning, waking up more than once, for example), this text will tell you what you can do to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep.
Get up on schedule. Changing your sleeping time by more than an hour can severely disturb (干扰) your sleep quality. 27 For example, if you normally wake up at 6 a.m. on weekdays to get to work, you might go to bed around 10 p.m., because that’s when you start to feel sleepy, and it’s also a good time to ensure 8 hours of sleep. If, on the weekend, you sleep until 9 a.m., you probably won’t be able to fall asleep that night until 1 a.m.
Be mindful of what you eat or drink before bed. 28 Digestion (消化) slows down while asleep, and a full stomach may interrupt (打搅) sleep. Similarly, you should avoid going to bed on an empty stomach, as a completely empty stomach may equally disturb your sleeping patterns.
29 Exposure (暴露) to light during the time when you’re supposed to be sleeping can destroy your body’s internal clock. Turn your light off, or use a very dim (暗淡的) night light. 30 They include windows, LED clocks and computer lights.
Change your sleeping position. You may think that it’s impossible to control what position you sleep in since you aren’t fully aware of what you are doing, but it is possible and it can make a considerable difference.
31
A.Try to avoid all sources of light.
B.Keep the room as dark as possible.
C.Make note of unusual circumstances.
D.Wait at least three hours after dinner before going to sleep.
E.Sleep is considered to be adequate only when there is no daytime sleepiness.
F.In other words, sudden change of sleeping time will affect your “biological clock”.
G.If you wake up in the middle of the night , make an effort to have a comfortable position.
Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment, rather than in a health club or gym. 32 Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible.
33 For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibres. Others consider barefoot (赤脚的) running or walking would be greener and thus be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.
A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on fresh air, sunshine, and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing. 34 . Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered green exercise.
Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people’s blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem (自尊). 35 Not everyone believes that green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. 36 Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts, which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage.
A.All forms of green exercise are good for you.
B.A green gym uses as little equipment as possible.
C.Spirits are also believed to be positively affected.
D.Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ.
E.So riding a bicycle in a forest can be called a type of green exercise.
F.Besides, it usually doesn’t use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym.
G.Some point out that many health clubs are constructed to take advantage of natural light.
Is Adventurous Sports Teaching Good or Bad
In recent years, adventurous sports such as bungee jumping have become increasingly popular. More and more people are taking these kinds of sports whatever the cost is. They say it is so exciting and enjoyable to take part in an adventure, which can relieve pressure or stress.
According to ED, some schools in the U.S. have also been urged to increase class teaching about adventures. And many have. 37 Injuries increased one hundred fifty percent between 1997 and 2007.
The study involved injuries treated in hospital emergency departments. Only two percent were serious.
The researchers did not try to identify the causes of the increase, but they have some theories. Lara McKenzie from Ohio State University was the lead researcher. She says one possibility is a decrease in the number of school nurses during the period they studied. For example, a study in 2004 showed that the number of school nurses nationally failed to meet federal guidelines. 38
Another possible reason for more injuries is a change in the traditional idea of adventure. Cheryl Richardson is with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. From her point of view, this “New adventure” expands the kinds of sports that are taught. 39 Also, she says not all states require relevant teachers to be specially trained. Untrained teachers could be less likely to recognize unsafe conditions. Cheryl Richardson points to one of the study’s findings — that injuries are often the result of contact with a person or a structure.
The researchers say larger class sizes are another possible reason for the increase in injuries. 40 The National Association for Sport says twenty to thirty students in such kind of class teaching should be the limit.
A.Classes on large scales can mean less supervision and cause potential injuries.
B.Yet now comes a study showing an increase in the number of injuries in “adventurous” class.
C.Generally speaking, untrained nurses could be more likely to be unemployed.
D.Adventurous sports help to relax students’ pressure and benefit their mental health.
E.But high-risk activities some schools offer now, like bungee jumping, can also expand the risks.
F.Schools without a nurse on duty may be more likely to send an injured child to a hospital.
They are drawing the attention of the world. They are the ones who are going to shape our future. Who are they They are the young generation who were born after 2000. This year, several young athletes have shone brightly at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, showing us their generation’s nature.
The young generation are brave and always want to challenge themselves. Freestyle skier Gu Ailing is a good example. After she performed well in the first two runs in the women’s freeski big air event, it was certain that she could get a medal. However, in the last run, Gu decided to attempt a difficult trick: a left-side double cork 1620—four and a half rotations (一圈) in the air before landing. “I have never done it before,” Gu told China Daily, “but I felt it was a chance to push myself to the limit.”
But for these young athletes, the sport is never just about scores, but also about having as much fun as possible. “I’m an 18-year-old girl out here living my best life. I’m having a great time,” Gu said. “It doesn’t really matter if other people are happy or not, because I feel I’m doing my best and I’m enjoying the entire process.” Gu Ailing’s good friend, snowboarder Su Yiming shares this attitude. He takes sports as a way to have fun. After he was judged to have lost the gold medal to Canadian athlete Max Parrot in the men’s slopestyle final, the 17-year-old didn’t feel upset. Instead, he was happy to have the chance to compete with his idol. “When I was hugging Max Parrot on the podium(领奖台), it felt unreal,” Su told China Daily. “All I did today was enjoy the runs and concentrate on my tricks. As long as I am on my snowboard I am happy.”
This is the young generation that dares to push the limits but also enjoys life.
41.Why did Gu Ailing want to try the difficult trick in the last run
42.How did Su Yiming feel after he was judged to have lost the gold medal

Thanks for your email. You do lots of sports at school in Canada. I’d love to play ice hockey one day.
We do lots of sports at our school too. We’ve got a swimming pool and our class go swimming every Wednesday. We also play tennis, volleyball and football, but football in Australia is different from soccer. We can touch the ball with our hands!
There are lots of after-school sports clubs in Australia too. I go to a surfing club after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We go to the beach and learn how to surf. It’s great fun!
Can you surf in your country Looking forward to your reply.

If a traditional sport bores you, it’s time to try something new! Cycling, but outdoors on city roads; surfing, but on the land; playing Frisbee (飞碟游戏), but with a group of people... New sports have been bringing fresh air to our minds and more joy to exercise.
National fitness has been a part of the national plan, aiming to keep people healthier. With great attention paid in support of national fitness, new sports begin to develop. According to a study by Houlang Research Institute, more than 93%of young people born after 2000 are interested in doing sports in the city.
Why do young people like new sports Houlang’s report says that except for keeping fit as a kind of exercise, many young people pick them up to socialize—allowing them to build up their social circles. Players tend to have online group chats talking about their usual activities and simply sharing their lives.
New sports are also “fit for taking photos and are less prevented by places”, ZouQingling, the CEO of Lvmama, told China News Service. Gathered together through social media, people can enjoy new sports at many places in the city, from parks to the side of roads.
Qianjiang Evening News also says that new sports are easier for new players to start, different from traditional sports, such as football and basketball, which usually require strict and difficult rules. Thus, new sports are less competitive but could bring more fun.
New sports have brought different lifestyles in China as they express various sorts of youth(青春)and fun. This new thing also shows that more people are prepared to enjoy sports, according to China News Service.

Starting exercise
You want to start doing exercise Congratulations! You have just taken your first step towards a new and improved you!
Most people assume that regular exercise does wonders for the body and mind—but what exactly are its health benefits To start with, physical activity increases the efficiency of your heart and lungs. During exercise, your heart and lungs must work harder. This extra effort makes them grow stronger over the long term. Moreover, exercise is good for your mental health. Working out can help you reduce stress and get over negative feelings.
Exercise is any activity that gets your body moving. Exercise doesn’t have to mean breaking a sweat at the gym or running a marathon. Any physical activity counts towards improving your health — something is always better than nothing. If you are just starting exercise for the first time, remember to start at a level that is comfortable for you.
Scientists have long known that what you eat can make or break a workout and possibly affect your fitness results. Like cars that run on petrol, your body burns carbohydrates (碳水化合物) for energy. Foods like noodles, rice, fruit and vegetables give your body plenty of carbohydrates to keep up your energy during a long workout. To help your muscles recover and repair themselves after exercise, you need to eat foods rich in protein, such as fish, eggs and milk products.
Choose the right clothing and shoes for the exercise and physical activity you plan to do is also important. To prevent injury, make sure your clothes and footwear are both comfortable and safe. What’s more, remember to warm up before exercising and stretch at the end of your workout.
So, now you know the benefits of exercise and how to do it safely and effectively. What are you waiting for

The legendary charity runner Rosie Swale Pope has jogged (慢跑) her way across Europe to Istanbul, Turkey, as she continues her 6,000-mile journey from Brighton in the U.K. to Kathmandu in Nepal. The 73-year-old took on the challenge in an effort to raise support to improve health, education and living of local communities in Nepal, which was destroyed by a destructive earthquake in 2015.
“It is not about just giving people food. It is about helping these talented people to grow their own food,” she said as she jogged by the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, the top tourist attractions in Istanbul.
Pope, from Tenby, Wales, began her journey to Kathmandu from Brighton, a town on the English Channel, in July 2018. Turkey is the 13th country she’s jogged through. The Republic of Georgia is next on her itinerary.
“I never know where I sleep every night. I sleep in fields. I sleep in the streets. I get up and run. I meet people I would never meet any other way,” she said. She transports her belongings in a bright red cart (手推车) that she drags behind her while she runs.
Recognized as one of the world’s longest solo runners, she ran around the world in 2004 to raise money for charity, and in 2015 she ran across the United States — from New York to San Francisco — to honor her late husband, Clive, who died from prostate cancer.
Her adventures also include sailing alone from the U.K. to the U.S. in a 17-foot boat. She described herself as “just an ordinary person, and I am old,” but she’s made special connections all over the world. “I meet people I would never meet any other way and actually it is a way of giving more to life because I have more. You don’t go out and you don’t wait for the world to come to you,” she said.
