It’s the strongest hurricane to hit Louisiana in over 150 years, and has left behind widespread damage. Laura is now weaker, but is still causing damage as it moves on.Hurricanes are strong storms with fast, spinning winds that form over oceans. In a hurricane, the winds spin in a circle toward the center, which is lower in pressure. As the hurricane moves across the sea, it collects water into huge spinning clouds. The water is released as rain as the hurricane hits land.Experts have been tracking Laura since mid-August. It moved through the Caribbean as a tropical storm. Tropical storms are like hurricanes, but with slower winds. Still, the storm was strong enough to kill 25 people as it moved across Haiti and the Dominican Republic. As it came closer to the coast of Louisiana on Wednesday, Laura gathered strength, becoming a Category 4 Hurricane — the second strongest possible. Over 500, 000 people along the coast were told they needed to leave their homes.Hurricane Laura made landfall in Cameron, Louisiana early in the morning on Thursday. With winds blowing at 150 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour), it was Louisiana’s strongest hurricane since 1856.After hitting land, Laura moved slowly north, bringing heavy rains and flooding, and leaving a path of wrecked homes and buildings behind. All through the state, trees were knocked down, damaging houses and taking out power lines. For over nine hours, Laura’s winds remained at hurricane speeds. Almost no area of Louisiana escaped.Weather experts had predicted a massive storm surge (风暴潮) up to 20 feet (6 meters) in height. Luckily, the storm surge was not as large as predicted, though it still reached heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters). Over 880,000 people were left without power, and up to 100, 000 people have been left without drinking water. At least four people have died.19.What do we learn about hurricanes A.They start under the sea. B.They come with lightning.C.They can cause heavy rain. D.They come after heavy rain.20.Compared with tropical storms, hurricanes .A.last longer B.are strongerC.travel more slowly D.cause less damage21.How does the author show the power of Hurricane Laura A.By listing some numbers. B.By quoting some experts.C.By giving some examples. D.By offering some theories.22.What would be the best title for the passage A.How Hurricanes Take Place B.How Hurricanes Are FormedC.Hurricane Laura Does Great Harm D.Hurricane Laura Attacks LouisianaHaving lived in California until 1970, my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage. There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists, the dates and times as well as the magnitude (震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0. There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant. There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours. The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the famous landmark. My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer — something like, “Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father” . Minutes later, I was safe outside.23.The author writes the passage mainly to tell us about ________.A.a new film about an earthquake B.how to survive an earthquakeC.his three earthquake experiences D.how to save children in an earthquake24.The earthquakes the author has experienced ________.A.all caused bodily harm B.are all recorded in a websiteC.all measured more than 6.0 D.all happened in California25.What does the underlined part “the famous landmark” refer to A.A church. They and their 12-year-old grandson Dean, who lives with them, had most of their personal belongings damaged or destroyed after a fire broke out in Thomas’ home office on Saturday evening.Ally Noctor was in the home with her mother, father, nephew Dean, and brother James when the incident happened. “My mom has COPD (慢性阻寒性肺病) so I said ‘just get out the back’, and she took the dog out the back,” Ally recalled. “My brother came running down looking for a fire extinguisher (灭火器), and my dad was screaming, ‘Fire !’”The fire started in the box room It’s Thomas home office. He’d just done it up. It was clearly an electrical fault but no one thought at the time to turn off the electricity. The room started filling with smoke quickly and they had to leave immediately. The house is located just a short walk away from the fire station. But when neighbors called, the available trucks were already out — so nearly 20 minutes had passed before the fire crew arrived.Thankfully, they managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the attic (阁楼) or to any more homes in the community. The family then went back inside the house to investigate what had happened and survey the damage caused. Dean’s gaming PC was melted, toys were melted, and even the shower was melted. All their clothes couldn’t be taken out.“The downstairs is okay, but there is smoke damage and water damage. And all of the upstairs is completely damaged. My mom is still in shock. She’s just staring into space,” Ally said. But Ally was quick to praise her community, who were right there to help the Noctors get out of the house the moment they sensed trouble and every one of the family got timely help.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置上作答。Ally ran out the door without shoes on when escaping.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The temporary house is OK but New Year may be difficult.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________试卷第1页,共3页试卷第1页,共3页参考答案:1.C2.C3.A4.C5.A6.B7.B 8.A 9.C10.C 11.B 12.A13.C 14.B 15.A16.A 17.B 18.B19.C 20.B 21.A 22.D23.C 24.D 25.B26.A 27.D 28.B 29.B 30.A 31.C 32.B 33.D 34.C 35.B 36.A 37.D 38.D 39.A 40.C41.destructive 42.causing 43.its 44.which/that 45.an 46.of 47.while/but 48.to transport 49.were stuck 50.left51.shock 52.ruined 53.struck 54.swept away 55.damage 56.deaths 57.Electricity 58.evacuated 59.shelters 60.in the open air 61.had a great effect on 62.trapped 63.stay calm 64.coming to an end 65.on hand 66.delivered 67.rescue 68.power 69.bury 70.affected 71.suffered 72.wisdom 73.breathe 74.efforts 75.revive 76.Survivors 77.destroyed78.Ally ran out the door without shoes on when escaping. A neighbour offered shoes to her within seconds. Her mom was given a blanket and a cup of tea by another neighbor. Two more neighbors came to help her dad and Ally didn’t even notice when they left. The following day, the family stayed in the next door’s house and all the other neighbors came over to comfort them. The family soon settled in a nearby temporary house. The temporary house is OK but New Year may be difficult. As the fire ruined almost everything in the house, the budget for New Year might be a little bit tighter. They have to save on anything they can and get it to the new house. But they are really lucky to live in a harmonious community. The neighbors come again with all that is needed for a simple family New Year celebration. The family are so grateful that they decide to throw a party for every neighbor when they are back in their house.答案第1页,共2页答案第1页,共2页 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源列表 audio.mp3 Unit 4 Natural Disasters 提升培优卷(含答案)-2024-2025学年高一英语必修第一册(人教版2019).docx
