I graduated about 4 years ago, and on that summer day I last hugged my dear professor, and promised to keep in touch. However, I did not.
In fact, I lost contact with most of the people I knew in college, including my good friends. The years after graduation hardened me into someone quite different from the proud graduate who left campus that day and headed for New York City, ready to offer the world histalent.
The world, I discovered, was not interesting. I wandered around my early twenties, paying rent and wondering why the lights were not turning green for me. My dream was to be a famous musician (I played the piano), but after several years of dark, empty nightclubs, broken promises, bands that kept breaking up and producers who seemed excited about everyone but me, the dream soured. I was failing for the first time in my life.
At the same time, I had my first serious encounter with death. My favorite uncle, the man who had taught me music, taught me to drive, thrown me a football-that one adult英语试题 第3页(共12页) 英语试题 第4市
whom I targeted as a child died of pancreatic cancer(胰腺癌)at the age of forty-four.I watched him suffer, night after night. "Ahhhhh, God," he would moan. “Ahhhhhh,Jesus!" The rest of us-my aunt, his two young sons,me-stood there, turning away our eyes, cleaning the plates and silently shedding tears.
After the funeral, my life changed. I felt as if time were suddenly precious, water going down an open drain. I returned to school. I earned a master's degree in journalism and took the first job offered as a sports writer. I worked at a pace that knew no hours, no limits. I was not only penning columns. I was writing sports books, doing radio shows, and appearing regularly on TV. I was part of the media thunderstorm that now soaks our country. I was in demand.

In London, an average of more than 2,000 lost wallets and purses were recovered each month by the city's transport authority during the 2021 fiscal(财政的)year, the data show.New York City's transit system received an average of more than 400 lost wallets per month in 2023. About four in five of those items never saw their owners again. Transport for London told me that the owner-reunion rate for lost wallets and purses in Fiscal 2021was 22.6 percent. At the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York, the current rate for all lost items is 18 percent.
Those figures don't include walletsthat were never found or turned in. A common misconception is that reporting a loss activates an "army of finders", said Les Gray, the chief operating officer for Recipero, a company that operates an international database of
lost-property reports as an effort to stop the movement of stolen goods.“It's an impossible area, really," Mr Gray said of the lost-and-found business.
A 2019 study in the journal Science found that strangers returned lost wallets to other strangers not only because they were nice, but also because they would feel bad if they didn't. For the study "Civic(公民的)honesty around the globe", researchers planted more than 17,000 wallets in public places in cities around the world. Each wallet had a key,a handwritten grocery list and business cards with a common male name. Some had varying amounts of local currency; others were cashless.
The results showed that if the wallet contained money, the chances were higher-51percent compared with 40 percent without it-that it would be reported.Switzerland had the highest overall reporting rates (79 percent with cash and 76.4 percent without).Altruism(利他主义)does not fully explain this, the study's lead author,Alain Cohn, said. "The increase can be explained by this desire to be seen as honest," he said.
28.How was the first paragraph organized
A.By giving examples. B.By giving a definition.
C.By listing figures. D.By quoting a famous saying.
29.Why do people return lost wallets to strangers
A.They feel upset if not. B.They want to get praise.
C.They want to return a favor. D.They have similar experiences.
30.Which of the following has a higher return rate
A.A wallet with a grocery list. B.A shopping bag with a laptop.
C.A wallet with some local money. D.A shopping bag with a business card.
31.What is the 2019 study on lost wallets about
A.Honesty exploration. B.Global research.
C.Wallet experiment. D.Civic behavior study.
A new study has revealed significant progress in the drive to reduce levels in the atmosphere of chemicals that destroy Earth's ozone layer, confirming the success of historic regulations limiting their production.
The findings, led by the University of Bristol and published in Nature Climate 效的)ozone-depleting substances (ODS), called hydrochlorofluorocarbons(HCFCs).These HCFCs are also potent greenhouse gases, so a reduction should also lessen global warming.英语试题 第5页(共12页)
英语试题 第6页(共10页
The Montreal Protocol was agreed to internationally in 1987 to introduce controls on the production and usage of ODS, which were once widely used in the manufacture of hundreds of products, including refrigerators, aerosol sprays, foams and packaging.HCFCs were developed as replacements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). While production of CFCs has been banned globally since 2010, HCFC production and usage is still being phased out.
Lead author Dr Luke Western, Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University's School of Chemistry, said,“The results are very encouraging. Without the Montreal Protocol, this success would not have been possible, so it's a resounding endorsement(支持)of multilateral commitments to combat stratospheric(平流层的)ozone depletion, with additional benefits in tackling human-induced climate change." The international study showed the total amount of ozone depleting chlorine contained in all HCFCs peaked in 2021.Because these compounds are also potent greenhouse gases, their contribution to climate change also peaked in that year. Although the drop between 2021 and 2023 was less than 1%, it still showed HCFC emissions were heading in the right direction. Dr Western said,“Their production is currently being phased out globally, with a completion date slated for 2040. In turn these HCFCs are being replaced by non-ozone depleting hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs) and other compounds. By enforcing strict controls and promoting the adoption of ozone-friendly alternatives, the protocol has successfully curbed the release and levels of HCFCs into the atmosphere."
The results relied on high-precision measurements at globally distributed atmospheric observatories, using data from the Advanced Global Atmospheric GasesExperiment (AGAGE) and the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA).
32.Why should global warming be lessened
A.Because the new study has proved that.
B.Because the HCFCs are also greenhouse gases.
C.Because greenhouse gases decreased in the atmosphere.
D.Because the University of Bristol gave us the evidence.
33. What is the purpose of the Montreal Protocol
A. To cancel ODS. B.To monitor ODS.
C. To produce more ODS. D.To limit the use of ODS.
34. What does the underlined word "curbed" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Started. B.Stopped. C.Limited. D.Watched.
35.What is thefollow-up paragraph about
A.What are AGAGE and NOAA. B.How to measure HCFCs.
C.AGAGE and NOAA's roles. D.How to use big data.

Many of us have the habit of procrastination(拖延). 36
Make getting started ridiculously easy
A real mood boost comes from doing what we intend to do-the thingsthat are important to us. Knowing this, we can reason that although getting started might feel uncomfortable, we're likely to feel much better once the task is done.
Ask for help
To put this into practice, you could ask a friend or colleague to help you get started on something you've been putting off. 37 This can get rid of the boredom and loneliness that make working alone a drag.
38
Some scientists say we're geared to thinking about now, but not the future. Some studies have shown encouraging people to imagine the future can help them make better decisions now.
Avoiduncomfortable tasks
If you can't stop procrastinating, the good news is that you can use this “bad" habit to your advantage. "Structured procrastination" is a clever way to stay productive even while you procrastinate. 39
Use a timer
This probably sounds similar to the Pomodoro Technique. If you haven't heard of it,Pomodoro works with a simple kitchen timer. 40 You set the timer for 25 minutes, work until it goes off, then take a 5-minute break.
A. Do the right thing
B.Imagine the future
C.Then how can we tackle it
D.What is procrastination at all
E. Have someone else work with you.
F.A timer on your phone or computer can work, too.
G.The trick is avoiding the less important things on your to-do-list.英语试题 第7页(共12页) 英语试题 第8页(共12页)

Monica,a seventeen-year-old girl, lives in Flatbush, New York, in the same house as her father, mother and two younger brothers. They are one of many ordinary families who live in that area. The street before her house is a playground for the neighbourhood children. After the homework is done, the neighbourhood children will run outside and play together, talking about the brilliant things they want to do in the future. However, Monica doesn't like the noisy children. She has her own friend, Eileen, a quiet girl.
Monica and Eileen, who have been inseparable since elementary school, found themselves at odds one afternoon. The misunderstanding arose when Eileen, without consulting with Monica, decided to attend a birthday party that Monica had not been invited to because Monica disliked the girl who would hold the party. Monica felt betrayed,as she had told Eileen about the hope of her turning down the invitation to the party. When Monica confronted Eileen about her actions, a heated argument happened later, leaving both girls hurt and annoyed.
Monica felt that Eileen's decision was a deliberate act of disloyalty. She believed that her best friend should have considered her feelings and discussed the opportunity before making a move that could affect bothof them. Monica's emotions were running high, and she felt that an apology from Eileen was necessary to mend their friendship.
On the other hand, Eileen felt that Monica was overreacting. She argued that the
decision to join the birthday party was based on her own choice and had nothing to do with hurting Monica,Eileen believed that she had the right to make friends with anyone, even if it meant making choices independently of Monica.
After the argument, Monica expected Eileen to apologize for not considering her feelings. However, Eileen maintained that she had done nothingwrong and refused to apologize. This situation left Monica feeling frustrated and uncertain about how to proceed.
Then, one day Monica came into her mother's room and told her the whole thing.Monica's mother, Paula, listened to the incident patiently when Monica began to weep, the tears streaming down Monica's cheeks.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
