Young people and concussions
Hannah Parmenter is 21 now. She got a serious concussion (脑震荡) when she was 11 while playing soccer. She still has problems from the concussion today.
According to a study, 1.7 million to 3 million young people get concussions every year while they are playing sports.
What should young people do after they get such a problem
Doctors once thought that rest (休息) was the best treatment (治疗) for concussions in children. However, these days, researchers at Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC say that rest may not be the best treatment for young people with concussions. Paediatric neuropsychologist (小儿神经心理学家) Dr. Chris Vaughan said that going back to school soon after a concussion might be better. If children miss less school they will have fewer problems after two weeks. This means that returning to school and daily life may help the brain (大脑) recover.
Doctors give parents some advice. They say that when children get concussions, parents should help them socialize (交际), but not let them miss too much school. Doctors also advise this kind of children to sleep well, and do some easy exercise.
