Great painter Salvador Dali once said,“A true artist is not one who is inspired but one who inspires others.” These words perfectly describe Umapathy,an art teacher from Puducherry, who plants the seeds of creativity in his students’ minds through arts and crafts(手工艺).
Umapathy makes beautiful crafts out of biodegradable materials like bamboo, dried leaves, seeds, roots, branches, vegetable waste, and so on.This way,he integrates sustainability into his creations, leaving an everlasting impact on his students.
While growing up,Umapathy was inspired by his father,a government school teacher and expert weaver(编织者).“He spent most of his evenings engaging in weaving.I would observe him and eventually developed an interest in the colours, designs and the art,” recalls Umapathy.
While he worked at the government school,it took Umapathy some time to excite the interest of the students. He experimented with different arts and crafts using a variety of materials.“That’s when a big realisation struck me.Most of the students at my school weren’t able to afford the materials or equipment to create craftwork.I decided to opt(选择) for natural materials which are available for free,” he says.
This move made the students more interested in the craft than before. With his guidance they were convinced that they could make wonders even out of waste materials. Now the school exhibits over 300 pieces of artwork, all created by the students over the years,on its walls.“I’m only giving wings to their imagination,” says Umapathy with a smile.
The craft has also aided several students from poor families to support their financial and educational needs. The students, with the help of Umapathy, have saved their earned income for their education.Several students have pursued their studies in fine arts with the income. One such student,Tamilselvan, completed his graduation in Arts and has followed the path of his master to become an art teacher.

Body language, sometimes called “non-verbal communication”,is an important tool. The way you communicate through body language can determine your success in everything from relationships to your career.Up to 93% of communication can be non-verbal.Paying closer attention to the messages you send through body language can help you succeed. 1
Have good posture(姿势).If you go to a job interview and you have bad posture, you’ll probably register more poorly to the interviewer.People will associate bad posture with weak confidence or boredom. 2 To have good posture, your head should be up and your back should be straight.Sit down the front of your chair and lean forward slightly to show you’re interested.
Mirror another person.Mirroring is when one partner copies the posture of the other partner. 3 Specifically, you can mirror a person’s tone or position of the body. You shouldn’t do this obviously or repeatedly though, only skillfully.
Emphasize your point with gestures.Have more than one gesture. 4 If you want to ensure you’re not misunderstood, repeat helpful gestures when you speak the idea aloud. You don’t have to use a body language gesture (or two) for every word, but it’s good to have a toolbox of gestures you can use to reinforce(强化) important but easily misunderstood concepts.
5 Watch for wandering eyes and constant sniffing. If you’re constantly touching your face, you’ll never look confident or at ease.Improving your posture and working to reduce nervous tics(抽搐) can be difficult and will take time, but you’ll quickly improve your overall non-verbal communication.
A.Use hand gestures when speaking.
B.This will help you better get your message across.
C.Avoid gestures that show nervousness or insecurity.
D.Here are some ideas for using gestures to communicate.
E.Keep your legs slightly apart,so you take up more space.
F.They might even think you’re lazy and unmotivated if you don’t sit up straight.
G.By copying the actions of the other person, you’ll make him/her feel connected to you.
2.答案 F
解析 上文说明不好的姿势传递不好的信息,F项中的“you don’t sit up straight”是不好的姿势,“you’re lazy and unmotivated”是不好的信息,因此推断F项“如果你不坐直,他们甚至可能会认为你懒惰,没有动力”符合语境,They指上文中的People,故选F。
3.答案 G
解析 根据本段标题“模仿另一个人”和下文“Mirroring ...of the other partner.”
根据下文“注意那些恍惚的目光和不断的抽鼻子”和“Improving your posture and working to reduce nervous tics (抽搐)can be difficult and will take time, but you’ll quickly improve your overall non-verbal communication.”

As humans,we’ve built connections and bonds with certain genres(体裁) or musical styles as a way to express ourselves.Music is a powerful tool to access information about ourselves.A recent study is offering a new insight into how our favorite tunes are linked to our personalities.
The study spanning six continents with more than 350,000 participants showed that personality types are linked with certain musical preferences.During the study, people from more than 50 countries self-reported their enjoyment of 23 different music genres while also completing a personality questionnaire. The researchers also had the participants listen to brief clips of music from 16 different genres of Western music and rank them.
Songs like Ed Sheeran’s Shivers appeal to extroverts(性格外向者),while adorable people would be happy listening to What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye.Meanwhile, open people tend to enjoy Nina Simone or David Bowie’s classic Space Oddity. And all of these types of songs have appeal that crosses national borders, according to the study.
“We were surprised at just how much these patterns between music and personality were alike across the globe,” said study author David Greenberg, honorary research associate at the University of Cambridge,in a statement.
“People may be divided by geography, language and culture, but if an extrovert in one part of the world likes the same music as extroverts elsewhere, that suggests that music could be a very powerful bridge.Music helps people to understand one another and find common ground.”
The researchers acknowledge that musical taste isn’t set in stone and can change. But the study provides a foundation for understanding how music can cross other social divisions and bring people together.

Recently, there have been huge advances in Artificial Intelligence(AI) programs that create art.The programs, which create artworks based on short descriptions, have amazed many people. They have also raised difficult questions.
In April, reported on Dall-E 2,a tool from OpenAI.Dall-E 2 uses AI to create incredible paintings, photos, and other artworks in many different styles based on simple descriptions.Since then,OpenAI has changed its rules to allow anyone to sign up and use the tool. But it’s still putting strong control on the art that can be created.
But now there are several other AI tools that work in similar ways. These new tools are free or cheap, and don’t have some of Dall-E 2’s limits.Midjourney is a website that allows users to create images from short descriptions.Stable Diffusion is similar, but users can also run the program on their own computers.
The new tools are entertaining and powerful. They allow people to quickly see almost any idea they can imagine, even if they aren’t artists. For some creative workers, like those at companies that create ads or images, the tools allow them to quickly explore new ideas.
Many artists are upset that they’re now competing against computers for attention, prizes and jobs. It’s hard for a single artist to compete against all the art and photography that have ever appeared on the Internet. In August,Jason Allen won first place at the Colotsfo State Fair with his picture Theatre D’opera Spatial, which was created with Midjourney. That upset many people.
The images and the descriptions used to train these AI programs were taken from the Internet. The training images were without permission, which has raised questions about whether what these tools are doing is fair or legal.
The creators of training pictures haven’t given permission for their images to be used, but their skills and talents are a huge part of what makes the new tools so successful. Some artists’ groups say artists should get to decide if their work can be used by these tools.

The sweet art of painting with caramelized sugar(焦糖) can be witnessed in China’s Sichuan Province. This ancient craft still manages to amaze tourists lucky enough to stumble upon a skilled street artist.
According to experts, this type of Chinese folk art originated from the Ming Dynasty when sugar animals and figures were created as part of ceremonies for sacrifice.During the Qing Dynasty,it gained even more popularity and the techniques were upgraded, which resulted in an increased number of patterns, most of them inspired by nature, wildlife and religion. In the beginning, people used molds(模具) to shape the caramelized sugar, but they were gradually replaced with a small bronze(青铜的) spoon that had to be used by talented artists who were experts at the art of normal painting as well.
“Painting” artistic pieces from melted sugar is very different from regular painting.Because the hot sugar cools down very quickly, the painter has to work swiftly, making sure he follows the correct order of strokes(一画,笔画) to get every shape just right. In order to get familiar with the process and the technique,it’s recommended that artists practice normal painting first.
Masters of this centuries-old craft use brown or white sugar as the main material.A bronze spoon and a small spade as tools, and a slab(厚块) of marble as the canvas. The sugar is melted over a fiery pot and spread over the canvas with the spoon.Once the shape is completed, the spade is used to glue a wooden stick to the artwork and to separate it from the marble slab. Then you can have your very own caramelized sugar dragon or tiger and a unique souvenir.

Being called “nerd(书呆子,宅人)” was a bad thing in the past.
That is happily different now, says Sarah Jane, director at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, which is home to the exhibit “Obsessed:The Art of Nerd-dom” through March 15.“I think the majority of my friends are nerdier than I am,” she said,“and I mean that in a ‘my friends are cooler than I am’ kind of way.”
Jane said the development of the Internet certainly helped blossom(兴旺),connecting people with shared interests across geographies. Now,it’s almost mainstream—exhibitions of nerd culture(宅文化) fill convention halls, comic book superheroes and science fiction stories are the focus of blockbuster(重磅) movies, and more.
“It has made being a nerd less of an isolating experience, and more of a community experience because you’re connecting with other people who have that shared interest,” she said.
Holladay, the co-curator(副馆长),spoke up in a meeting about what the coming exhibition season would look like.“I knew of another nerdy exhibition that had happened in LA recently...and I just thought ‘you know,I bet there are nerdy artists on the(Olympic)Peninsula and in Washington who have really quality work, where the subject matter might not fit into most exhibits’,” she said.
And she wasn’t surprised when they received plenty of recommendations.“My theory was that nerds are everywhere,” she said.“Once I got in touch with the right people, everyone was coming out of the woodwork.”

Every year in May,art galleries and museums prepare shows to honour Leonardo da Vinci, who died in France on May 2,1519.He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and the most creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape 8P,which they think is Leonardo’s earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images(图像),not one.One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5,1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old.It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off.Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “mirror writing”.It’s a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said,“By looking at his writing, including that from this drawing,we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples(样本)and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list.It is part of an exhibit at Italy’s Uffizi Gallery. The gallery-director,Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo’s drawing technique and his abilities in writing.

With big features around the corner like 5G,it may be quickly approaching the time to upgrade your device. 1
Price is important. The newest devices are all starting to cross the four-digit price range, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend big to get quality. 2 Non-flagship devices for the current year can also offer all of the features you’re looking for and make some savings too.
What will you be using your device for?You need to identify your needs to understand if the price is worth paying. Most devices come equipped with packed features like cameras for use or with social media and bigger screens that have been useful for many gaming options. So be clear about what you’ll be using your device for. 3 That will certainly help cut costs down, especially the big-ticket items that are only aimed towards a certain audience.
4 With rising prices, many of us are holding on to our devices for a longer period of time, but months of updates and file storage can slow devices down, and internal hardware could fall behind in times too.Make a list of must-haves and do a little research to see if something new is coming.
It can be no small task to find a suitable replacement. 5 After all, this is a type of device you’ll be stuck with every day.
A.Think of longevity(持久) too.
B.Still,it’s worth your effort to get it right.
C.You may use it mainly for mobile games.
D.Then look for devices without certain useless features.
E.But there are definitely reasons for wasting money on quality.
F.So what should you consider when picking out your new device
G.Second-hand devices from a year or two before can provide all the features you need.
2.答案 G
解析 前文提到不需要为了获得高质量而花费大价钱,后文提到可以选择非旗舰设备这种省钱的方式,其中的also说明空处讲述的也是选择物美价廉设备的一种方法,且G选项中的“can provide all the features you need”和后文的“can also offer all of the features you’re looking for”相照应。故选G。
4.答案 A
根据后文“With rising prices, many of us are holding on to our devices for a longer period of time...fall behind in times too.” 故选A。
5.答案 B
解析 前文提到选择合适的设备并不容易,再结合后文“After all, this is a type of device you’ll be stuck with every day.” B。Section Ⅳ Using language(1)—to -infinitive, -ing and -ed as predicative

“Is it art?” Tyka,an artist and software engineer, asked the audience at Christie’s 2019 Art + Tech Summit in New York in June 2019.The event’s theme was “The A.I. Revolution” and Tyka was referring to artwork created using artificial intelligence. He flashed an image of a urinal(男用小便池) on two large screens at either side of the stage—Marcel Duchamp’s famous and controversial sculpture Fountain. The audience laughed.“Obviously,it can be,” he said.
However, many in the art community are wrestling with several unanswered questions after an algorithm-generated print that resembled 19th century European portraits was sold for $432,500.For example:When artwork is accomplished by means of the algorithm(算法),who is the artist—the programmer or the computer Because many works of AI art are digital, how do you value a creation that’s designed to live natively on the Internet and be widely shared And where, exactly,is the market for this new kind of work headed There are few clear answers.
Claire Marmion, the founder and CEO of Haven Art Group, says collectors are still trying to figure out where the market for AI art is heading, and that it may not be the disruptive(破坏性的) force that some think it will be.Or,at least, the industry will adapt to it.
Mario Klingemann, whose work was sold by Sotheby’s,prefers the term “generative art”,which includes all works created using algorithms, and believes the current buzz will eventually die down, otherwise AI art isn’t going anywhere.Instead,he thinks it will one day be viewed as simply another tool of the artist.
“Just like photography never goes away,or making movies doesn’t,I’m pretty sure it will establish itself as a new media format,” he says.“Right now,of course,it’s all this mystery about AI,but I expect this to become really just a normal thing, where people will focus on what artists are actually saying with their art.”

In many people’s eyes, artist Mark Rothko’s enormous paintings are nothing more than masses of color.Yet,a painting can be worth nearly $100 million.Besides,Pablo Picasso’s twisted faces attract some viewers but terrify others.
Why does the phenomenon happen The answer may lie in our brain networks.Researchers have now developed an algorithm(算法) that can predict art preference by analyzing how a person’s brain breaks down visual information and decides whether a painting is “good”.The findings show for the first time how basic features of a painting combine with human judgment to give art value in our minds.
Most people, including researchers, consider art preference to be various, says Anjan Chatterjee,a neurologist(神经学家) at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study. In some cases, personal preference is rooted in biology. For instance, sugary foods help us survive and people tend to share similar standards of beauty when it comes to human faces and landscapes. However, when it comes to art,we seem to care about and value relatively arbitrary(任意的) things, according to Chatterjee.
To figure out how the brain forms value judgments about art, neuroscientist Kiyohito Iigaya and his colleagues first asked more than 1,300 volunteers on the website Amazon Mechanical Turk to rate a selection of 825 paintings from four Western types including impressionism, cubism, abstract art and color field painting.Volunteers were all over the age of 18,but researchers didn’t give exact information about their familiarity with art or their ethnic(种族的) or national origin.
The researchers revealed that paintings preferred by the same groups of people tended to share certain visual characteristics. These characteristics all fell into two categories: “Low-level” characteristics, like contrast and color, were intrinsic(固有的) to an image; “High-level” characteristics, like the emotion a painting brought about, required human understanding.Once the method was trained,it could analyze these characteristics in new paintings and accurately predict which works a person would like.

A new study suggests classic paintings by well-known Impressionists Joseph Turner and Claude Monet may have been influenced by air pollution during the Industrial Revolution.
The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by authors from Harvard and Sorbonne universities, analyzed 60 oil paintings by Turner from 1796 to 1850 and 38 paintings by Monet from 1864 to 1901.
Scientists don’t know exactly how polluted the cities were during that time for lack of data. However, researchers say examining the works of Turner and Monet can give a picture of long-term environmental change with the air pollution.
In particular, researchers said changes in local sulfur dioxide emissions from burning coal may explain changes in the colour contrast and intensity(强度) of Turner,Monet, and others’ works, even after taking into account the artistic trends and subject matter of the time.
Scientists successfully measured painters’ representation of nature, focusing on differences in local weather patterns which influenced colour in works painted in different parts of Europe.Paintings done in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than other works in other parts of the continent.Generally, artists can historically accurately represent their environment,so Turner and Monet were chosen because they are famous for their landscape and cityscape paintings and also because they were active during the Industrial Revolution, when air pollution grew at a rate never seen before.
Additionally, researchers say that as the air in London and Paris became more polluted, the cities would appear hazier (模糊) to the eyes as well as in photographs.By comparing the paintings of Turner and Monet to pictures from the era, they were able to determine the artists were at least partly influenced by the change in emissions.

A
Robots in the art world are nothing new.In fact, for centuries, people have built robots as art objects. However, what’s different now is that artists and engineers are building robots that actually create art.
In 1973,British-born painter Harold Cohen wrote a computer program and called it AARON.At first,AARON only made simple outlines whose color and details Cohen would later add.Fifty years later,AARON is able to paint anything a human could paint. So can AARON be called an artist or creative In 2010,Cohen explained,“Although I wrote the initial computer code that AARON follows,AARON can generate unlimited numbers of images.” So according to Cohen, the simple answer is yes—AARON is creative.
It’s not just paintings that robots are creating, though.Last year,a robot called Shimon released its first album(唱片) on Spotify.Shimon began life as a simple robot marimba(木琴) player.Over the years, however,it’s learned how to perform with other musicians, write original songs.Shimon does this by analyzing huge amounts of music—roughly 50,000 rock, jazz and hip-hop songs—to identify patterns and then uses that information to create original works.
It may be cool to hear a song created by a robot, but is there any other reason to build robots that can play music According to Gil Weinberg, one of Shimon’s creators, because the robot is capable of doing things that a real musician might not think of,he and his team “hope and believe that these new abilities would lead to new directions that could not be achieved in human-to-human cooperation”.
While questions about robots creating art are fun to think about, there are many other ways that robots can help artists in the way they create their works. For example, advancements in 3D-printing technology will allow artists to build more complex pieces for their sculptures. Therefore, robots in the art world are here to stay.
1.What was AARON able to do at first
A.Paint people and landscapes.
B.Prepare basic outlines for Cohen.
C.Draw pictures of itself and Cohen.

Jason M.Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now,his award-winning image is stirring debates about whether art can be generated by a computer, and what, exactly,it means to be an artist.
In August 2022,Allen,a 39-year-old game designer who lives in Pueblo West,Colorado, won first place in the “digital arts/digitally-operated photography” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning image, titled Théatre D’opéra Spatial, was made with Midjourney—an artificial intelligence system that can produce detailed images when fed written prompts(提示).
Allen’s winning image looks like a bright cross between a classic and modern painting. It’s one of three such images he entered in the competition.Allen posted excitedly about his win on Midjourney’s Discord server on August 25,along with pictures of his three entries; it spread quickly on Twitter days later, with many artists feeling angry about Allen’s win because of his use of AI to create the image.“He just ‘pressed a few buttons to make a digital art piece’,” one Twitter user wrote.“We’re watching the death of art unfold before our eyes.”
However,to get the final three images he entered in the competition,Allen said,he took over 80 hours.First,he played around with phrasing that led Midjourney to generate images of women in nice dresses and space helmets.Over time, with slight adjustments to his written prompts,he created 900 repeating processes of what led to his final three images. He gave the final touch to those three images in Photoshop. Then he ran the images through another software program called Gigapixel AI that can improve resolution(分辨率) and had the images printed at a local print shop.
Allen is glad that the debate over whether AI can be used to make art is getting so much attention.“Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it,we need to recognize it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward,” Allen said.

Household chores like cooking, cleaning, washing the dishes, and making the bed are never done; they just get repeated like a broken record.Boring! 1 But there are science-based reasons for changing your attitude towards chores. It turns out that doing chores is great for your health.
2 As researchers state in a report, doing undemanding tasks allows the mind to wander.Your mind gets a break, which allows you to consider old problems with new eyes.In fact, undemanding tasks stimulate(激发) more creative ideas than demanding tasks or just resting.
Chores are linked to a lower dementia(痴呆) risk.To discover what activities might be linked to a lower rate of dementia, researchers analyzed massive amounts of healthcare data from the UK Biobank. They found that those most engaged in household chores had a 21 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those least engaged in chores. 3
Finishing your chores can increase motivation.BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything, states that the most important skill is recognizing and celebrating pleting even a small task, like making your bed,can give you a sense of satisfaction. 4 Similarly, author Admiral William H.McRaven argues that if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
Chores are good for children’s mental health.Children develop a sense of ownership when they have jobs to do around the house and it makes them feel like they are an important member of the household. 5 In my own case,I bond with my daughter by gossiping(闲聊) and singing while we do chores together.
A.Chores are an opportunity for “me time”.
B.Chores can lead to creative problem-solving.
