Text 10
Today,I’ll talk about a great artist,Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci, near Florence,Italy. At 15,Leonardo went to work with a famous artist. At the age of 20,he was already a master painter.Although da Vinci was a great painter,he never gave up his interest in other subjects. For example,he drew a flying machine 400 years before the airplane was invented. In all,da Vinci designed more than 1,000 inventions. As a matter of fact,da Vinci started many projects that he never finished. He was always more interested in planning projects than doing them.He often quickly lost interest in one project and couldn’t wait to start another. So he completed very few paintings.Da Vinci took four years to paint the Mona Lisa.Unfortunately, the man who ordered the painting didn’t like it and refused to pay him. However, ten years later,da Vinci sold it to the King of France. The King hung it in the Louvre Palace in Paris.Today the Mona Lisa still hangs in the Louvre, which is now a museum.

Getting out of my car one evening in late January,I met my neighbor Theresa, who had seen me drive in.“Mrs Taylor is in the hospital again,” she said.“I thought you’d like to know.” I had last seen Mrs Taylor a day or two before Christmas when I took her a little loaf of pumpkin bread, and she came from the back room in her wheel chair to talk with me.Mrs Taylor and I had been neighbors for 17 years.I remember the dog she and her husband used to have. They called him Beau.He greeted everyone who walked by,and Mr Taylor loved him.
Most of my conversations with Mrs Taylor had been incidental—visits by the mailbox, running into one another at the gas station where she helped me put air in my tire, quiet talks at the funeral home where we went to honor the memory of a mutual(共同的) friend.
When my husband and I moved here with our four noisy, laughing kids,it must have seemed as if the peaceful quiet of the neighborhood had been forever broken. But we showed our enthusiasm to the neighbors sincerely although we had little in common with the mostly elderly folks on our street.Over the years they helped us love our children, picking them up when a bicycle overturned and sending the kids cards for their graduation. We have enjoyed the comfort of living beside people who help us if our tree falls on the fence and feed the cat when we’re away.
Mrs Taylor did not survive her latest set-back.Once again I walked into the funeral home to say goodbye to a neighbor.I remembered the barking dog,the chats by the mailbox, the friendly wave across the fence.I remembered, and I was sad,but I had no regrets. Now there is a new family moving into the Taylor place.I see children’s toys in the yard. It’s time to take a walk.

Scientists near San Francisco work to identify a type of endangered fish using a tool that was originally made for treating cancer.
Currently,CRISPR is used to change the genetic material in specific cells.By changing the structure of immune cells,it helps recognize and fight cancer. The same technology is now used in a special machine called Sherlock, which,of course,is named after the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes. They do not, however, use Sherlock to change fish cells.Instead, the ocean researchers catch the fish, collect a small amount of mucus(黏液) and then test the cells to find the genetic makeup of the fish.It can be done in about 30 minutes. In the past, the researchers would have to wait weeks or months to get test results.
The researchers have found that the technology is extremely helpful when looking at different species of Chinook salmon, because they look nearly the same. However, some of them are endangered, and the scientists need to keep track of them.
In the past, the scientists would catch the Chinook salmon and measure them to tell them apart.“It’s not very accurate,” said Andrea Schreier,an associate professor at the University of California in Davis. Now she is working on the salmon.Schreier said when they catch the fish, the Sherlock machine can quickly tell them if they have one of the special salmon. It’s important because it allows the scientists to do things that will help the endangered salmon live longer. For example, they can catch them in lakes far away from the coast and take them by truck to the San Francisco Bay.In the past, the fish might have tried to make it to the Bay by swimming in rivers. However, due to climate change, the river water is sometimes too warm for the fish to make the trip safely.
Schreier said she feels good about the project because she likes being able to assist with conservation.“I really want to work to maintain our ecosystems and our native populations as much as possible, given all of the pressures that we humans place on them through our different activities.”

In many people’s eyes, artist Mark Rothko’s enormous paintings are nothing more than masses of color.Yet,a painting can be worth nearly $100 million.Besides,Pablo Picasso’s twisted faces attract some viewers but terrify others.
Why does the phenomenon happen The answer may lie in our brain networks.Researchers have now developed an algorithm(算法) that can predict art preference by analyzing how a person’s brain breaks down visual information and decides whether a painting is “good”.The findings show for the first time how basic features of a painting combine with human judgment to give art value in our minds.
Most people, including researchers, consider art preference to be various, says Anjan Chatterjee,a neurologist(神经学家) at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study. In some cases, personal preference is rooted in biology. For instance, sugary foods help us survive and people tend to share similar standards of beauty when it comes to human faces and landscapes. However, when it comes to art,we seem to care about and value relatively arbitrary(任意的) things, according to Chatterjee.
To figure out how the brain forms value judgments about art, neuroscientist Kiyohito Iigaya and his colleagues first asked more than 1,300 volunteers on the website Amazon Mechanical Turk to rate a selection of 825 paintings from four Western types including impressionism, cubism, abstract art and color field painting.Volunteers were all over the age of 18,but researchers didn’t give exact information about their familiarity with art or their ethnic(种族的) or national origin.
The researchers revealed that paintings preferred by the same groups of people tended to share certain visual characteristics. These characteristics all fell into two categories: “Low-level” characteristics, like contrast and color, were intrinsic(固有的) to an image; “High-level” characteristics, like the emotion a painting brought about, required human understanding.Once the method was trained,it could analyze these characteristics in new paintings and accurately predict which works a person would like.

Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends,Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class.Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn’t looking.
Now,Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all,she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass(放大镜) abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence’s table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing This was definitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on,but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way.Of course,Agatha could have asked them what they were up to,and they might have told her—but she wouldn’t have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school,Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum.Agatha saw them go into the bookshop.Strange,again.Florence didn’t read much—no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school,Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn’t because they were busy.Even more mysterious...
When Agatha’s mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along, which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Opening the door of the living room,Agatha heard voices shout from darkness,“SURPRISE!”
After eating the cake,Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents.

On the table were a cake with candles and a pile of presents.Mum and Dad followed her into the living room and lit the candles, saying,“Happy birthday, dear. You were so distracted by the mystery to be solved as to forget today is your birthday! Now,blow the candles, make a wish and enjoy the cake.”
After eating the cake,Agatha got down to the business of opening her birthday presents. The first gift was the big red and pink birthday card with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” written on it in Timmy and Florence’s childish handwriting.“We hope you like the card we made for you!” said Timmy, and Florence added,“We also bought the latest Sherlock Holmes Detective series for you!” Agatha hugged her friends in appreciation of their surprise gifts.Mum and Dad handed her a brand-new magnifying glass in place of the old broken one.Agatha might not have solved the mystery, but it was still a wonderful birthday party!单元检测卷(一)

28.Which of the following best describes the technology
A.Immature. B.Efficient.
C.Inaccurate. D.Economical.
29.What do the new technology and the traditional way have in common
A.They originally aimed at detecting cancer.
B.They test the fish mucus to tell them apart.
C.They are carried out by researchers in the lab.
D.They help researchers tell different salmons apart.
30.What can be inferred about the Chinook salmons
A.They will soon die out. B.They are of the same size.
C.They are used to cool water. D.They are now well protected.
31.What do we know about Andrea Schreier from the text
A.She is rather devoted to the conservation.
B.She can now spend less time on her work.
C.She thinks her work needs improvement.
D.She thinks humans are greatly pressured.

32.What do the cases in paragraph 1 mainly indicate
A.The value of different works of art.
B.The characteristics of different artists.
C.The importance of facial appearances.
D.The differences in people’s appreciation of beauty.
33.Which of the following ideas may Anjan Chatterjee support
A.People’s preference is mainly rooted in biology.
B.People usually share common feelings towards scenery.
C.Researchers’ art preference is different from others’.
D.Art works have fewer arbitrary things to value.
34.Which of the following factors was taken into account during the study
A.The identity of the participants.
B.The background of the paintings.
