阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Words! Words! Words! So many words! We use them to express feelings and ideas. But where do those words come from And how do they end up in a dictionary The answer is through wide reading of published materials by dictionary researchers.
The editors (编辑) of Merriam- Webster Dictionary spend an hour or two reading every day. What do they read They read online articles, books, magazines and newspapers. They pay special attention to new words, new usages and differences in spellings. They also find out which words are being used the most. And they pay attention to the way they are being used.
The Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED’s) Reading Program uses paid and volunteer readers to help. If these people have new findings in their reading, they provide examples and explain their usages. The history of a word’s usage and current (当前的) usage are also pointed out.
Millions of historical and current words are kept in the databases (数据库) of these and other dictionaries. Many recently added words may come from electronic files (文件), pop culture and politics. The OED has added many new English words from Republic of Korea recently. Korea, first spelled Corea, has been used as the country’s name since the 17th century. In 1999, “K- pop” appeared in Billboard Magazine and was added to the OED in 2016.
From Merriam- Webster we have 455 recently added words including “dad bod”—a typical middle- aged dad’s body shape. “Digital nomad” was also added, meaning someone who does his job over the Internet from anywhere.
There are so many words in the world. With the great effort of the dictionary researchers, there will be more on the way!

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks ” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today ” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.

C.Because some students didn’t understand his questions.
D.Because he did not know much about Indian culture.
Nowadays China plays an increasingly significant role in world politics, economy and culture integration. English has many differences from Chinese.
This is a brief introduction to the differences between Chinese and English Grammar to help those who have some basis in Chinese to learn this language more easily.
1. English emphasizes on the structure, while Chinese focuses on the meaning. In English, several meanings can be expressed clearly with complicated structure in just one sentence. In Chinese, a sentence is usually short with little modifier (修饰语), or it will cause confusion in meaning.
2. When expressing the meaning, long sentence is regularly used in English and short sentence is used in Chinese. From point one above, we could conclude that English sentences are usually long and Chinese sentences are usually short. One should “Get the meaning, forget the words” in Chinese learning.
3. It has many clauses in English sentences which are often separated into small sentences in Chinese way of expression. In an English sentence, except some modifiers, it has a lot of clauses which makes a sentence much more complicated. In Chinese, one meaning is usually expressed in separated sentences connecting with a comma.
4. In English people use pronouns a lot, but in Chinese people often use nouns. In English, people not only use “we”, “you”, “she”, “they”, but also use “that” and “which” to keep a sentence well structured and clear, and avoid repeating meaning. Due to short sentence structure, a pronoun is commonly replaced by a noun in Chinese expression.
5. The passive voice is often used in English expression; In Chinese, one usually uses the active voice. The passive voice is widely used in English, especially in some scientific articles. For example, “It is (always) stressed that…” is generally expressed as “People (always) stress that…” in Chinese.
29.This text is written for ______.
A.foreigners who visit China B.foreigners who live in China
C.foreigners who learn Chinese D.foreigners who teach Chinese
30.What will happen if a sentence in Chinese is too long
A.The sentence is likely to be confusing.
B.The structure of this sentence is wrong.
C.There will be mistakes in the sentence.
D.The sentence’s meaning can be expressed more clearly.
31.Which is TRUE according to the text
A.The active voice is often used in English expressions.
B.Pronouns are used in Chinese frequently.
C.Chinese prefer clauses to small sentences.
D.English sentences are usually longer than Chinese sentences.

C.Tea is enjoyed by people worldwide and it is good for health.

“Baby signing”classes established to improve language skills actually make little difference to children’s development, according to new research. Scholars claimed there was no evidence that the lessons —in which babies are taught simple gestures to communicate their everyday needs —enable children to talk quicker than others.
In a three-year study, it was claimed that the method could make mothers more responsive to their children’s behaviors but failed to actually increase babies’vocabulary. An active home environment in which parents regularly talk to their children was much more effective, researchers warned. The findings will cast doubt on the movement —born in the United States—which has proved hugely popular among middle-class parents.
Baby signing is now a multi-million pound industry, with thousands of mothers and fathers paying for classes, books and DVDs, Young children are taught simple gestures for words and phrases to communicate their everyday needs, such as“milk”“more”“all gone”“food”and “tired”. It is claimed that the technique brings great benefits, including improving the relationship between mother and child, helping language development and even increasing a child’s intelligence.
But research from Hertfordshire University has found no evidence that using baby signing helps to improve their language development. The scholars added,“Baby signing has become big business and mothers, particularly first-time mums or less confident parents, feel the pressure to do it. Some even think if I don’t do it and everyone else does, I must be a bad mother.”
However, baby signing experts hardly sustained the findings. Wendy Moat, 45, who has been running baby signing classes for three years, said that the classes encouraged speech development, and may help develop a higher IQ. She said“So many mums say that their children talk so well because they did baby signing when they were babies. Parents wouldn’t say it if they didn’t believe it.”
33.Which of the following may help improve children’s language skills
A.Talking to them as much as possible B.Using simple words and phrases
C.Buying them more books and DVDs D.Creating a serious home environment
34.The underlined word“sustained”in the last paragraph means ________
A.found B.got rid of C.supported D.quit

“Ouch! Stop pulling my hair! You can have the lunchbox. Please let go,” Fraser said as Umar, another boy, snatched (一把夺过) his lunch.
At break, my friend Fraser was crying loudly. He had always been bullied (霸凌) by Umar, who was big while Fraser was a small, shy boy.
Umar would always snatch Fraser’s lunch. It was becoming an everyday problem because if Fraser wasn’t there, Umar would look for some other boys. Fraser told me that he was hungry but could do nothing about this. I asked him why he didn’t tell this to the teacher.
“I can’t because Umar has said he’ll beat me if I ever tell my teachers or parents. See my face. He pushed me hard against the tree the other day, and I hit the tree! ”
I was thinking of a plan, a plan to stop all this. The next day, I brought some hot ketchup (番茄酱). At break time, I asked Fraser to put all the hot ketchup into the burger he had brought. As usual, Umar came and snatched Fraser’s lunchbox and put the burger into his mouth.
No sooner had he done this than he let out a great cry and ran to the nearest drinking water cooler. After a while, he came back and hit Fraser hard and snatched my lunchbox.
This was too much! I decided to go to the headmaster the next day and tell him about this. The next morning when I arrived at school, I saw Umar already crying in the passageway.
I went to him and asked him why he was crying. He didn’t want to tell me. I could not help asking, because I wanted so much to know what had happened to him.注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

66. Many people have trouble learning English and think it is a crazy language. Many expressions can lead to misunderstandings. When it comes to this, they give many examples in which even the smallest words are confusing. This is because English was invented by people, not by computers, and it embodies human creativity. This reminds us that a lot of the English we learn in the classroom is very different from the English we learn in the real world. Only in the real context can we understand the characteristics of language.
67.范文
Finally, he decided to tell me what was going on. He said that yesterday another student had seen him snatching the lunchboxes and that boy had gone straight to the teacher and reported the matter. As punishment, he was standing outside and the teacher had said that she would tell the headmaster. He would be suspended unless we forgave him.
I didn’t want Umar to get suspended so I agreed to forgive him. I asked him why he always snatched others’ lunch. He told me that he got up late so he rushed to school without having breakfast or taking lunch with him. I told Fraser the whole story. To my surprise, he also agreed to forgive him. We then asked him to wake up early if he wanted to live a meaningful life and didn’t want to be suspended from school. Umar happily agreed, so from then on he did not snatch anyone’s lunch and became our friend.
