Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. Those without children might welcome the chance to bond with friends’ kids. And for people who live alone, living closer to friends can make savings on some things easier. Friends do all they can to help friends. That’s why teacher Eli Fanus’ sixth grade group at Poland Community School joined Joseph “Joey” Banks in his fight against Type 1 diabetes.
Each year members of the group choose a cause they can get behind. Their pick for a cause to work on during their last year at the school was Joey Banks, one of their own, who had diabetes the year before.
Student Sydney Dick said three Poland Community School students have Type 1 diabetes, including her little sister. Dick said when a person has diabetes, their body produces little or no insulin (胰岛素) and they will depend on man-made insulin for their lifetime. She also noted that getting Type 1 diabetes has nothing to do with lifestyle, can happen at any age, and has no cure (特效药). “At least not yet,” she said.
This year the group’s plan is clear: raise money to help support the search for a cure.
“We put posters up all around the school,” Dick said, “telling people to come to the fair and support us.”
The fair was the Fall Harvest Fair on Nov. 14, a date that happened to be World Diabetes Day. The group put plenty of thought into how and what they might offer for donations (捐赠) to their cause.
“Anna was looking for crafts (手工) we might make and saw butterflies,” Lily Moreau said.
“My father even created a butterfly from wood!” Alan Tibbetts said.
Various crafts and some sweets were also for sale. With each sale of goods, fairgoers were given small paper butterflies made by all the members of the group, to thank them for their donations.
Banks’ friends had set what they thought might be an unachievable fundraising goal (筹款目标) of $500.
“With five minutes to go, we finally made it to $502,” David Tjalsma said.
The group presented a check on Monday to Christina Foster, development coordinator for the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation in Maine.
