A jobless man applied for a job as an office boy at a big company. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.

The man replied, “But I don’t have a computer or an email account.”
“I’m sorry,” said the HR manager. “We can’t accept persons who do not use email.”
The man left with no hope at all. With only ten dollars in his pocket, he decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10 kg tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes from door to door. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated this three times, and returned home happily with 60 dollars.

Richard Daintree: December 13, 1832 — June 20,1878
A geologist and explorer who used photography as his medium to record field research, he was probably one of the first people to do so. He also discovered several coal-fields, gold-fields, and copper fields during his explorations. His photographs of these discoveries are an excellent source of information for researchers today. The Daintree rainforest, Daintree river, and Daintree National Park have all been named in his honour.
Headlie Taylor: July 7, 1883 — March 22, 1957
A farmer in New South Wales, Australia, he came up with the Sunshine Header Harvester that has benefited countless farmers over the decades. Though he was barely educated, Taylor had a brilliant mind that led him to try improving the existing farm machinery. With hard work and creation, he taught himself engineering, and built a machine that could not only collecet grains from standing crops, but also from damaged or fallen ones, thus saving grain that would otherwise be lost. This machine, or the “Header Harvester”, also cut the crop heads instead of pulling them out.

After the bomb killed civilians in the two cities, he decided to never get involved in the development of nuclear weapons that could be used for military purposes. His work then focused around finding other, non-violent uses for atomic energy.
Dorothy Hill: September 10, 1907 — April 23, 1998

In Colonial days, farm families worked from sunrise to sunset and sometimes longer. People had little time for play. They did not have a chance to see other people as much as we do today. But sometimes they were able to turn hard work into good times and still visit with their neighbours.
In Virginia, Indian corn was an important crop. In late autumn after the weather had turned cold, the corn was ready to be harvested. Each ear had a cover of leaves called the husk (壳). The colonists pulled ears of corn from the dry stalks and stored the ears of corn. Later, they held a corn husking party.
On a clear night in November, neighbouring families gathered to husk (剥去……的壳) the corn. They lit lanterns in a barn and piled the corn in high mounds(垛) on the floor. Then everyone went to work.
Most of the corn was yellow or white. But from time to time, a red ear was found. The person who found it was supposed to have good luck.

Born in London on 28 November 1772, Luke Howard was interested in the weather from an early age 36 He was instead easily distracted (分心) by the clouds he could see through the window. He started his career as a pharmacist, producing and sending out medicines for people. 37 He soon became an amateur meteorologist (业余气象学者).
In 1802, Howard presented his research in a lecture to the Askesian Society, a club for people who were interested in science. At this point, meteorology hadn't progressed as much as other sciences, because it was difficult to take observations when the weather was always changing. To take his observations, Howard did sketches (草图) of the clouds as they moved and changed in the sky. 38
Howard suggested that although the shapes of clouds were changing, there were three basic types of clouds in the sky, to which he gave Latin names. 39 . The second was“cumulus”, meaning heap (一堆) or pile. And the third was “stratus”, meaning layer or sheet. He also introduced four other cloud types to recognize the changing clouds when they are joining together or breaking apart. In 1803, he published his research in a paper called “On the Modifications of Clouds”.
After the publication of Howard's research, the field of meteorology continued to develop. Scientists now have a much greater understanding of weather patterns (模式) all around the world. 40 Professor Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, said, “His scientific work helped us understand our climate.”
A.There are now 10 types of clouds.
B.But his true passion was meteorology.

Miguel opened the door to his grandpa’s shoe shop. Grandpa was drawing a customer’s foot onto a piece of paper. He didn’t look up. Miguel sat down. He looked at the cut leather, hammer (锤子) and pliers (钳子).
The tools reminded Miguel of something else he loved. Grandpa always gave him a piece of candy whenever Miguel helped clean up. Miguel knew he wasn’t supposed to take candy without asking. But he was hungry then. It looked like Grandpa would be busy for a while. “Maybe I don’t need to wait,” Miguel thought.
Miguel reached secretly for the candy box. He hurried and put it in his mouth. Pretty soon the customer left. Grandpa was busy picking up a piece of leather and putting it in some water. Miguel ate the rest of the candy as fast as he could. Then he walked over to Grandpa.
Grandpa looked up from his work. “Hello!” he said with a smile. Miguel hugged Grandpa. He hoped Grandpa couldn’t tell he’d eaten a piece of candy. “It looks like you’re busy today,” Miguel said. “Do you need any help ” “Sure! Could you pass me that thread (线) ” Miguel nodded. He pulled it between his hands. “Wow, that’s strong.” Miguel said. Grandpa laughed, “It has to be, to last through the wear and tear of life.” Grandpa pulled the thread through the leather.
“You know, we need to be more like this shoe,” Grandpa said. Miguel looked at the leather, “Um. We do ” “Yes, indeed. We need to stay strong. That way temptations (诱惑) won’t make us fall apart,” Grandpa said with a nod.
Miguel suddenly thought of the candy. He knew he should tell Grandpa about it. Grandpa took an old shoe off the shelf, “See this big hole ” Miguel nodded. “This was once a small hole that could have been fixed easily. But the owner waited, and now it’s going to be much harder to fix. Bad habits and bad choices are like that hole. It is best to fix them early.”Paragraph 1:
They kept talking as Grandpa worked.

The summer holiday is coming. Our classmates have had a discussion about what to do during the holiday.
Some are in favour of staying at home. They think they can have a good rest and stay with families at home, which is comfortable. And staying at home costs little so they can save money. But people staying at home will lose the chance to get to know the outside world.
However, others prefer to go out for travelling since it can deepen their knowledge and broaden their horizons when they enjoy the scenery and relax. But they will spend much money and may encounter some inconveniences while travelling.
In my opinion, it would be much better to stay at home for I can do what I like, such as reading books, watching TV, and helping my parents with the housework. So I would like to stay at home.
67.One possible version:
They kept talking as Grandpa worked. The whole time, Miguel kept thinking about the candy. When Grandpa finished, Miguel helped him clean up. Then Grandpa reached for his box of candy as usual. Finally, Miguel couldn’t take it anymore. “I took one piece of your candy without asking,” he said and hung his head in shame. Grandpa set down the box in surprise and wondered what had actually happened.Miguel told him all about taking the candy. “I’m so sorry, Grandpa! I’ll never do it again. I promise!” Grandpa hugged Miguel and kissed him lovingly. Miguel felt so much better. “Thank you for being honest. That’s more important to me than just about anything else.” On the way home, Miguel felt just like one of Grandpa’s new pairs of shoes, strong and ready for life.
