My brother Jack’s childhood was completely influenced by his extreme picky eating. From three to about 14, he only ate chicken, peanut butter, apples, cereal, and sweets. We tried everything in the book, but none succeeded.
However, in the past three years, he has gone through an amazing change. Today, he will eat close to ten times the types of foods he was willing to try before. He is even willing to try new things; he constantly asks to order something different at a restaurant. I’ve often wondered what makes a person change so much.
Through some research, several factors come out. The first major player in our food preferences is innate (先天的), and it all starts with genetics. As humans, we all are likely to enjoy a few particular tastes for evolutionary (进化的) reasons.
However, genetics aren’t the only factor that explains why we enjoy or dislike particular foods. In fact, most of our preferences are actually learned, sometimes even before we are born. In one study, mothers regularly drank carrot juice late in the stages of their pregnancy (怀孕). After birth, these babies tended to enjoy carrot-flavored milk more than other babies.
Additionally, I believe that sometimes, cultural influences affect your willingness to try food, Possibly, my brother finally got so sick of having to be the one who needed a special order at a restaurant that he forced himself to try and like those things he was afraid of. It simply takes time. People will learn to adapt and realize their true tastes. An open mind is a positive thing, and most will develop an ever-expanding plate as they age.
24. What do we know about Jack’s eating habit before he was 14
A. He always ate too much. B. He only ate certain foods.
C. He had no chance to try new food. D. His family changed his eating habits.
25. Which word can best describe Jack’s change of eating habits
A. Surprising. B. Scary. C. Dangerous D. Funny.
26. What does the study on pregnant mothers tell us
A. Our food preference can be learned.
B. Genetics influences food preference.
C. Eating habits can’t be changed very easily.
D. People enjoy certain foods for evolutionary reasons.
27. What suggestion does the author make about eating habits
A. Keep a healthy lifestyle. B. Stick to what we like.
C. Understand the food culture. D. Stay open and try something new.

Falls were the primary reason for injury with over three﹣quarters of the injuries occurring as the result of a fall. The severity of fall﹣related injuries had a lot to do with the height of the fall.Patients who were injured after falling from a height over 20 feet were 10 times more likely to be treated than patients who were injured falling from 20 feet or lower.
"We found that the climbers who fell from heights higher than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated for a rock climbing﹣related injury,"explained the study author Lara McKenzie,PhD,director at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Hospital."This trend, combined with the fact that rock climbers have a higher hospitalization rate than other sports and recreational injuries, demonstrates the need to increase injury prevention efforts for climbers."

In recent years, wooden buildings have reached new heights, with soaring wooden skyscrapers completed or underway in countries like Norway, Switzerland and Australia. Sweden, likewise, has come up with a plan as big as a city — building the world’s biggest wooden city. As the world’s largest urban construction project in wood, Stockholm Wood City will be built in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm in 2025.
By using wood, the project is expected to reduce carbon footprint by up to 40%, compared with building in concrete and steel, says Annica An s, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg, a Swedish urban development company. Some people may have concerns over fire risks posed by wooden buildings, but experts say engineered timber(木材)can resist fire as well. As with other modern construction projects using wood, Wood City will still use some concrete and steel in places like the foundations, but the overall amounts will be greatly reduced. As wooden buildings are much lighter, their foundations can be smaller.
The construction will not be as noisy as it is built from concrete and bricks, adds Ms An s. This makes wooden buildings particularly suitable for urban redevelopment in general, since putting them up is less likely to annoy the neighbours. It should also be profitable. Ms An s is looking for a return on investment of 20% or better. “Sweden is progressive when it comes to wood construction,” she says.
The world’s largest wooden city is supposed to make commute(通勤)easier and shorter, decreasing emissions from transportation. The website for the project describes Stockholm Wood City as a “five-minute city,” which means that anywhere one would need to go — work, grocery stores, or school, for example — would only be a five-minute walk away. As An s concluded, “We want to create an environment where our customers, those who will live and work here, can participate in the development and design of the city district of the future.”
32. What is the project about
A. Making Stockholm a low-carbon city.
B. Creating more wooden skyscrapers in Sweden.
C. Building the highest wooden building in Europe.
D. Constructing the largest wooden city in the world.
33. What advantage do wooden buildings have over concrete and steel buildings
A. They can strongly resist fires.
B. They are more comfortable to live in.
C. They are more environmentally friendly.
D. They are built on a more stable foundation.
34. Why are wooden buildings suitable for urban redevelopment
A. They are profitable for investors.
B. They cause less noise when built.
C. They have a short construction period.
D. They are less costly to maintain and repair.
35. How can we describe the future life in the wooden city
A. Secure.
B. Stressful.
C. Convenient.
D. Fashionable.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me “The dream is priceless.” However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular thing happened, which almost ruined (毁坏) my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in Senior Two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $12.25 per pared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect (前景) of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn’t dare to tell my coach. I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, “If you make your bed, you have to lie in it.” I decided to talk to my coach by myself. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me. I gathered my courage and knocked at his door…
