Throughout all the events in my life, one in particular sticks out more than the others. As I reflect on this significant event, a smile spreads across my face. As I think of Shanda, I feel loved and grateful.
It was my twelfth year of dancing. I thought it would end up like any other year: stuck in emptiness, forgotten and without the belief of any teacher or friend that I really had the potential to achieve greatness.
However, I met Shanda, a young, talented choreographer(舞蹈指导). She influenced me to work to the best of my ability, pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up, encouraged me and showed me the real importance of dancing. Throughout our hard work, not only did my ability to dance grow, but my friendship with Shanda grew as well.
With the end of the year, our show time came. As I walked to a greenroom filled with other dancers, I hoped for a good performance that would prove my improvement. I waited anxiously for my turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the loudspeaker announced my name. Butterflies filled my stomach as I took trembling steps onto the big lighted stage. But, with the determination to succeed and eagerness to live up to Shanda’s expectations, I began to dance. All my troubles and nerves went away as I danced with my whole heart.
As I walked up to the judge to receive my first place shining, gold trophy(奖杯), I realized that dance is not about becoming the best. It was about loving dance for dance itself, a getaway from all my problems in the world. Shanda showed me that you could let everything go and just dance what you feel at that moment. After all the doubts that people had in me, I believed in myself and did not care what others thought. Thanks to Shanda, dance became more than a love of mine, but a passion.
24. What did the author think her dancing would be for the twelfth year
A. A change for the better. B. A disappointment as before.
C.A proof of her potential. D. A pride of her teachers and friends.
25. How did Shanda help the author
A. By offering her financial help. B. By entering her for a competition.
C. By coaching her for longer hours. D. By awakening her passion for dancing.
26. How did the author feel when she stepped on the stage
A. Proud. B. Nervous. C. Scared. D. Relieved.
27. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. Success lies in patience. B. Fame is a great thirst of the young.
C. A good teacher matters. D. A youth is to be treated with respect.

Hair that is tightly coiled(盘绕) offers the best protection against the sun’s potentially damaging rays, which could explain why this trait evolved in early humans in Africa and straighter hair emerged as some humans moved into cooler areas.
It has long been suggested that the reason our body hair became so fine that it is sometimes barely visible, while our scalp hair remained thick, is to prevent our heads from overheating in the sun. In our bipedal(双足行走的) ancestors, the beneficial shading effect of head hair may have outweighed its insulating effect.
Tina Lasisi at Penn State University wondered if the type of hair on a person’s head also makes a difference. To learn more, Lasisi and her colleagues put three different wigs(假发) on a thermal manikin—a model of the human body with heaters and sensors that is used to measure the thermal effects of clothes. One of the three wigs was straight, one had moderate curls(卷) and one had tight curls. Lasisi says the tightly coiled wig was within the range of curl found in people of recent African ancestry.
The team found that the hair’s type made a big difference to how much heat the head of the manikin gained from simulated sunshine at 30℃. The head with a straight wig gained less than half as much heat as a control head with no wig. The head wearing the moderately curled wig gained around a quarter as much heat and the head with the tightly curled wig gained less than a tenth as much as the no-wig control.
The researchers think that the curls reduce how much heat reaches the skin by increasing the gap between it and the hair surface. Making straight hair longer doesn’t achieve this because it lies flat, says Lasisi.
The team also found when wetting the manikins to simulate sweat, the head with no wig lost twice as much heat via evaporation as those with the wigs. However, having any head hair more than halves the amount of sweat required to prevent the head from gaining heat, with tightly coiled hair reducing this more than moderately curled or straight hair, the result shows.
“Any mechanism that could help cool the body, and at the same time save precious water, would definitely have been acted on strongly by natural selection,” says Joseph Graves at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. The study findings are important because they could help change some people’s prejudiced views, says Graves.
28. What does the underlined word “trait” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Curl. B. Feature. C. Situation. D. Essence.
29. What will Tina Lasisi probably agree with
A. The three wigs were made of hair from different races.
B. The head with no wig gained the least amount of heat from the sun.
C. Wearing long straight hair could reduce the heat reaching the skin.
D. The head without a wig had the best cooling effect of sweating.
30. For what purpose was the research carried out
A. To gain insight into early humans. B. To prove all races are born equal.
C. To clarify a question. D. To learn about the use of wigs.
31. What might be the best title of the passage
A. Curly Hair Protects Us from the Sun B. Curly Hair Evolves into Straight Hair
C. Natural Selection Is What Really Counts D. A Study Changes Prejudiced Views

In an interview with Xinhua, Wang Yanan sounded no different than any other energetic freshman in college. But what’s on the surface doesn’t always tell the whole story. In a calm tone, she spoke about her experience with depression. She had the strange idea that she had nothing to do with the rest of the world. She said, “It’s not because of my grades. I just felt my life was meaningless.”
Wang’s struggle with mental health is not rare among people her age. A report by the Chinese Youth & Children Research Centre showed that about 30 million people under the age of 17 in China are dealing with emotional or behavioural disorders. But why are teenagers more prone to these mental upheavals(剧变)
According to Zhu Yongxin, deputy secretary-general of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, academic pressure is one of the main factors.
After entering senior high, Wang felt very tired. She often went to bed at 3 or 4 a.m., only to rise at 5. Lack of sleep and the inability to concentrate left Wang feeling overwhelmed.
Too many examinations, struggling with competitive rankings and pressure from parents are other factors that lead to students’ psychological problems, Zhu said.
“My parents always tell me my classmates are competitors, so I view them as my enemies and feel upset whenever I see them,” Xiao Min, a 14-year-old, told Xinhua.
In adolescence, when the ability to cope with setbacks has yet to fully develop, young people are far more susceptible to mental health issues, according to Liu Huaqing, a physician with Beijing Huilongguan Hospital.
Unfortunately, the symptoms are often ignored, met far too often with responses such as, “Why can others deal with setbacks and you can’t ” or “You’re just making something out of nothing.”
Mental health is an important factor when considering the well-being of the country’s youth. And this is why the issue is being addressed. Measures such as easing workloads, avoiding public posting of test results and urging schools to stress importance of adequate sleep have previously been taken. But in addition to these efforts, a new action plan has been put into place. The plan calls for all schools in China to offer psychological services on campus.
Aside from the authorities’ efforts, families and teenagers need to be proactive(积极主动的), noted psychological consultants, Yang Guilin. “Parents should try to be supportive, warm and open with their kids,” Yang added. “Teenagers should engage in aerobic exercise, such as playing badminton, to release negative emotions.”
32. What led to Wang Yanan’s suffering from depression
A. Her parents’ expecting too much of her. B. Her constant poor academic performance.
C. Her lying sleepless at night frequently. D. Her tiring and heavy academic burden.
33. How does Xiao Min react to the competition between classmates
A. Negatively. B. Positively. C. Indifferently. D. Doubtfully.
34. When faced with setbacks, why are middle school students more likely to be affected
A. Because they are undergoing too much pressure.
B. Because they are afraid of fierce competition.
C. Because they are not mentally mature.
D. Because they are lacking in peer support.
35. Which of the following describes a new phenomenon in schools across China
A. The students will no longer be troubled by the practice of posting test results publicly.
B. The students will have more time to relax themselves and enjoys better health.
C. The students may learn to cope with psychological problems under professional guidance.
D. The students can develop some hobbies to rid themselves of negative feelings.

Last Sunday morning, my parents and I were going on a vacation in Sydney, where my grandparents lived, to celebrate my birthday. Actually, celebrating my birthday in my grandparents’ home had been a family tradition. As a result, their neighbors, warm-hearted and friendly, were familiar with me. Sometimes, they even came to the house and brought me birthday gifts in person.
We took the subway there as usual. When we got off the subway, I found I had lost my bag. The bag was memorable to me because it was given by my parents when I became a senior high school student. It also had some valuable items inside, including an expensive watch a birthday gift from my grandparents.
I couldn’t help but cry because the bag meant so much to me.“What’s the matter. Lily ” my mom asked. I told her that I might leave the bag on the subway. Hearing that, she comforted me and said. “We have plenty of time. Let’s talk to the staff (工作人员).”
Instantly, my parents reported the situation to the staff at the subway station. A kind worker smiled to me and said. “If someone found it, they would hand it in.” He asked us to wait patiently for a while, and then he called for help. After half an hour, the worker didn’t give us any information. I started to become anxious and lose hope. My father said. “No news is good news.”However, the worker finally apologized to us and let us wait for the information on the recovery of the missing bag at home. We had to go to my grandparents’ house first.
In the afternoon, while I, together with my grandparents and my father, was preparing for a birthday party, I heard my mother talking to someone on the phone about my lost bag. My heart was beating violently, and I was expecting something extraordinary to happen. Sure enough, my mother got me to answer the phone, “Good news, Lily. The call is just for you, from the kind worker. He said a girl called Beatrice had sent the bag back.” I felt amazed that the girl’s name is the same as my friend’s in Sydney.
