A Teenage Surfer
My son Leon's passion (热衷的爱好) for surfing began at the age of 13. Before and after school each day, he put on his wet suit, picked up his equipment, swam out beyond the surf line and waited to be challenged by his three- to- six- foot friends.
One afternoon, the lifeguard reported over the phone to my husband Wilson that Leon's eye was badly injured (受伤) by his board. Wilson rushed him to the hospital, where he received 26 stitches (缝针) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of his nose.
I was on an airplane flying home from a meeting while Leon's eye was being stitched. Wilson drove directly
to the airport after they left doctor's office. He greeted me at the gate and told me Leon was waiting in the car.
“ Leon ”I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been bad that day.“ He’s been in an accident, but he’s going to be fine,” said my husband. A travelling working mother's worst nightmare (噩梦) had come true. I ran to the car so fast that the heel of my shoe broke off. I s wung open the door to see that my youngest son had a patch (眼罩) over his eye and was leaning toward me crying,“ Oh, Ma,I'm so glad you' re home.”I cried in his arms, telling him how awful I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called.“ It's okay, Mom,” he comforted me.“ You don't know how to surf anyway.”
“ What ”I asked, confused by his logic. “I' ll be fine. The doctor says I can go back in the water in eight days,” said my son. I wanted to tell him he wasn't allowed to go near water again until he was 35, but instead, I bit my tongue and hoped he would forget about surfing. For the next seven days, he kept pressing me to let him surf again. One day after I had repeated“ No” to him for the 100th time, he beat me at my own game.“ Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love,” he said.
And I gave in.
Back then, Leon was just a boy with a passion for surfing. Now he's a man with a passion for surfing. And he's a man with a responsibility. He is one of the top 25profess onal surfers in the world. Passionate people st ck to what they love and never give up.

25. What did Leon's mother hope after his accident
A. He should find a new hobby.
B. He must take surfing lessons.

Can plants talk Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals (化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked (攻击) by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help:“I'm being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eat ng the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili (辣椒) plants do this. Some trees make click ng noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the“ wood wide web” The wood wide web is linked underground by fungI (霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day sc ent sts will learn how to create a“ firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to“ talk” with them ourselves.
27. When plants are attacked by insects, they will .
A. produce chemicals as a warning or a call for help
B. send out chem cals to humans to ask for help
C. control the wasps to kill the insects
D. kill the insects by themselves
28. What's the structure of the passage
29. Which of the follow ng would be the best title for the passage

The Secret of Humans Beating AI
“ Dear Afu, who is Beyonce ”
“ Beyonce is an American singer, songwriter, actress, record producer, and dancer, who set a record with 32 Grammy wins...”
“ Good. Tell me how I can have two girlfriends.”
“ Are you crazy If you do that, your secret won't go undiscovered!”
This was a conversation I had in a WeChat group called“ Talking with your robot”, an account based on Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer technology. To me, the respondent was no different than a real person. ChatGPT as the new- generation talking AI has impressed global users, me included, ever since it surfaced online on Nov 30, 2022.
The new feature (功能) can answer questions, do translations, summarize essays and even draft codes for a computer program. It is as good as a human living inside a computer.
ChatGPT is making life very convenient. A time might come when one hands it content and it produces a well- made PowerPont presentation. That could, however, mean job losses (失业). After all, if a computer program can write code, then it would make a programmer redundant.
That may be a worry, but it is still premature. ChatGPT has more advanced (先进的) learning features, but it still follows the same technological path. Its biggest advantage lies in the ability to carefully examine an ocean of data and rebuild words into a language, but it's still not that creative.
Artificial intelligence (人工智能) can quickly draw a picture, but that picture will be based on pictures it is fed. It can also write science fiction, but based on content about the future that it has read.
In comparison (比较), a human brain imagines the future and then puts in efforts to realize it. AI can imag ne a future with faster spaceships, but it can't imagine a world of space elevators as humans can. So, there is no need to worry too much. By being creative there will be plenty of opportunities for humans to score over AI.
30. What's the purpose of the dialogue in the beginning
A. To introduce the features of ChatGPT.
B. To explore the creative abilities of humans.
C. To explain how artificial intelligence works.
D. To discuss the advantages of having two girlfriends.
31. The word“ redundant” in Paragraph 7 probably means“ ”.
A. unknown B. advanced C. creative D. unneeded
32. What can we learn from the passage
A. AI can paint whatever you want.
B. ChatGPT can create new words by itself.
C. AI can try its best to make its dream come true.
D. ChatGPT can translate one language into another.
33. Which of the follow ng statements would the writer agree with
A. AI can take the place of humans.
B. Humans can beat AI with creativ ty.
C. AI can share its experiences with humans.
D. Humans can imagine a world of space elevators as AI.
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达 (第34-36题每题2分, 第37题4分, 共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Teens like to work out in their daily life, like running, playing basketball or soccer. But we don't often think of martial arts as a possible activity, instead, we rule it out because we think it's dangerous, uncommon, and even, impossible.
Well, here's some good news: you' re wrong! Martial arts is much more common than people think, and you can start learning. at any age. Practicing martial arts is a great way to keep in shape( both physically and mentally). And it's much less scary and much less difficult than it's usually portrayed (描绘) as in movies, so worry not, you don't need to be the karate kid to have a blast! Let's look at what you can usually expect from martial arts of any style.
Good martial arts generally requires you to focus on the posIt on and movement of every one of your limbs (四肢), sometimes even your breathing too. Think about it: when you leave the gym, your mental state has improved and you are much calmer. This is because you' ve only paid attention to one activity. It is a great way to clear your head, and practice can help you learn to stay more focused in general ( say, when you start your schoolwork afterwards).
Long series of choreographed moves ( including when to breath in and out) called forms are often described as“ moving meditation (冥想)”; they' re meditative in the same way doing repeated moves is, but much more so. Martial arts practice can be as slow or as intense (激烈的) as you want, but it's always extremely attractive.
Martial arts also improves your coordination (协调性) , and greatly improves your posture. I have personally seen students go from slouching (低头垂肩地站) and knocking things over to walking tall with their shoulders back in just a couple of months.
There are many styles and countless subtypes and mix- ups of martial arts. Whichever one appeals to you, know that all of them are good choices, competitive or not.
