2.To use listening strategy to listen for numbers. Step 2 Pre-listening 1 1.Introduce the concept of a food festival, specifically the Sweet Corn Festival, and ask students to guess what the festival might be about. This could involve discussing the prominence of corn in various cuisines and its potential role in a festival. 2.Discuss the possible location of the festival, with a focus on Mexico, where corn is a staple in the diet and culture. Step 3 Listening 1 1.Play a recording about the Sweet Corn Festival, and ask students to identify the main idea and specific details about the festival. This could involve noting the types of activities and foods associated with the festival. 2.Focus on their understanding of the cultural importance of corn in Mexico, as indicated in the listening material. 3.Listen again to the recording, focusing on the numbers mentioned(e.g. the number of uses for corn). This could involve noting the various ways in which corn is used in food and other products. 4.Complete Jason’s notes for the vlog, filling in the details about corn’s uses, as mentioned in the listening material. Evaluate students’ ability to make guesses based on the context and their background knowledge. Assess their understanding of the festival’s cultural context. Assess students’ comprehension of the main idea and their ability to identify specific details related to the Sweet Corn Festival. Evaluate students’ ability to listen for numbers and details, and their understanding of the various uses of corn.
Purpose To reinforce students’ listening skills by having them listen for numbers and additional details.
3.To tell the culture and different uses of corn and some other plants. Step 4 Listening 2 1.Listen to a conversation about different uses of corn, focusing on listening for numbers(e.g. the number of uses for corn’s parts). This could involve discussing the versatility of corn and its role in various industries. 2.Discuss the information heard and any new insights, and encourage students to think critically about the importance of plants in different aspects of life. Step 5 Pair-work 1.Have students work in pairs to role-play a conversation about the uses of a plant, using the sentence patterns provided(e.g. “Could you tell me the different uses of corn ” “Certainly. Corn can be used to make popcorn.”). 2.Encourage them to ask for permission and respond politely, using the structures they have learned. Assess students’ ability to listen for numbers and details, and their comprehension of the uses of corn and other plants. Assess students’ ability to use polite sentence patterns correctly in a conversational context. Evaluate the politeness and appropriateness of their role-play interactions.
Purpose To provide students with an opportunity to practise using polite sentence patterns to ask for and give permission.
Homework Required: Finish exercises in your book. Optional: Work in pairs to finish the conversation tasks.
