Step 1 Pre-reading Present a picture of pigeons and raise questions as follows: (1)What are these animals (2)What do you think of them Step 2 Fast Reading 1.Students quickly read the content of the slides and find out what words Henry uses to describe pigeons. 2.Students are required to read quickly again and find out another suitable title of this text and give reasons. Choose another suitable title and give your reasons. a. Clever Pigeons b. Pigeons in the Park c. Amazing Pigeons d. People and Pigeons Assess students’ preliminary understanding by their responses to the presented questions, consider their attentiveness to the images and their ability to identify the animals correctly and express their opinions succinctly and coherently about pigeons. Assess students’ fast reading comprehension by their accuracy of identifying descriptive words used by Henry and their effectiveness in proposing alternative titles with supporting reasons, demonstrating their understanding and critical thinking.Purpose Students will be stimulated interest and initiated discussion, and be cultivated the ability of quick comprehension and critical analysis.2.To understand others’ thoughts and feelings about animals from the words and tones. 3.To use the “opinion- fact” logic to talk about our feelings of animals. Step 3 Careful Reading Students are required to read the text further and fill in the blanks about Henry’s change of views towards pigeons. (1)Why does Henry write this blog (2)What does Henry do for studying pigeons Find the sentences in the blog. At last, the theme of this text is presented. “Only through learning, careful observation, looking up information, etc., can we understand something more fully.” Assess students’ detailed reading comprehension by their accuracy in completing the blanks which reflect Henry’s shifting perspective on pigeons, and their ability to justify their answers with evidence from the text.
