Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year is the most important of all the holidays for the Chinese. It is defined to be the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar. Unlike the Christian New Year, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.
Normally, the celebration will start from the New Year’s Eve and will last for about 15 days until the middle of the first month. Before the celebration, people will normally do a complete cleaning of the house and housewares. After the cleaning, people will decorate the house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are red in colour. The most popular traditional decorations of the New Year are upside down fu, duilian, lanterns, year painting, paper-cuttings, door gods, etc. Most paper-cutting pieces are posted on windows and some are placed on the wall and the front door.
This festivity is the time for family reunion.Families get together and have a big meal, which is the most important part of the Chinese New Year celebration. Dumplings are the most traditional food. People will normally visit relatives and friends, do some shopping, watch traditional Chinese shows, launch fireworks, and plan for the coming year. Fireworks will be launched to celebrate the coming of the New Year as well as to drive away the evil. In China, working professionals will normally have 7 days off to celebrate. After the family reunion, some Chinese families may take the chance to visit tourist destinations.
Children like the festival very much, because they can have delicious food and wear new clothes. They can set off firecrackers. They can also get some money from their parents. This money is given to children for good luck.(It is believed that the money in the red packet will suppress the evil from the children, keep them healthy, and give them a long life.) They can watch TV, watch dragon and lion dances.
The New Year Festival finishes at the Lantern Festival. On the Lantern Festival, we usually eat rice dumplings. They are round so they bring us good luck.
