Teaching material:Book 3,Unit 9,Writing workshop
Analysis of the teaching material:
The writing workshop is designed to read a learning reflection on Lesson 3 in Unit 9 and then write one by the students themselves.So students should firstly review the text in Lesson 3,which we finished in the previous classes.Then because this is the first time for them to read a learning reflection,they need to be guided to find out what a learning reflection should be like.This class, they'll read the learning reflection to identify and summarize its structure,content and language. While reading,the students will be encouraged to summarize the writing tips of a learning reflection,because in this class,reading is for the purpose of writing.
Analysis of the students:
Although it is the first time for the students to read a learning reflection,it will not be very difficult for them to find the structure,content and language of the passage since the text is not long and it is clear and well-written.By finishing different kinds of pre-reading,while-reading and post-reading tasks,the students will be able to understand the text better and summarize the writing tips easily.It will also not be difficult for them to find the use of addition linkers to get the sentences and paragraphs related to each other

Language ability:Help the students read and understand the learning reflection and summarize its key elements.
Cultural consciousness:Help the students find out they can learn how to be a useful person to the
family and then to the country in many ways,like reading a book,listening to a song or watching a movie. At the same time,they can learn many virtues from ancient Chinese people in history,
like from Mulan.
Thinking capacity
1.There are differences in people's memory or ability,but anyway nobody can succeed easily. Students should make full use of their time and opportunity.
2.Living a life is just like learning a passage.You should learn,feel,think and make changes. After reading a learning reflection and watching a video in which Mulan reflects on her own life, students can also think about how they can live a well-organized life.
Learning ability:
1.While reading a passage,students can also get the clues for their own writing.So they can summarize the writing tips of a learning reflection after reading.
2.Write an outline in class and then a learning reflection after class by themselves.

Design idea: Help students know the key elements that a learning reflection should have by analyzing its structure,content and language and at the same time summarize the writing tips, after which they will know what to include and what to pay attention to in their own writing.
Methods and strategies
Students are the subject of the learning process.Language teaching should care about students' differences and requirements.Their curiosity and the desire to find should be activated and protected.Thus,the lesson is carried out by asking the students to work individually,in pairs and in groups to help the students to read,find,think and summarize.Lecturing,analyzing, discussion,doing exercises,comparing,task-driven and autonomic methods are used in this class.
The passage is firstly read as a whole and then gradually the students go to the details to find the key elements of a learning reflection.While learning addition linkers,students will be asked to read and make comparisons between using the addition linkers or not.Since time is limited,we'll just do with some of the linkers in class.The rest will be left for the students to learn by themselves,which will be both challenging and inspiring.Also,classroom teaching will be extended to after-class study.After reading and analyzing each paragraph very carefully,the writing tips will be very easy to get,since every activity is designed to lead to the appearance of the tips

I.Lead-in
Activity 1 Guessing
Allow the students some minutes to look at three pictures and guess: What is a reflection
A reflection is an image in a mirror.(The image of a cat is shown in the mirror) It can also be a careful thought about something.(A man is thinking hard)
What is a learning reflection (A lot of ideas are coming out of an open book)
The process of doing a reflection:While doing learning reflection,you learn something.You feel something.You think about something.You expect to make some changes
Learning prediction:Students will be able to know the meaning of reflection and a learning reflection after looking at the pictures and discussing with each other.
The purpose of the design: Using some pictures to vividly show what a reflection/learning reflection is will be help to activate students' mind.
II.Pre-reading
Activity 2 Reviewing
Review Lesson 3 The Secrets of Your Memory.The students were asked to make a mind map
of Lesson 3 after learning it.The teacher will use a mind map drawn by a student to review the content of the text and lead to the reading of the learning reflection.The teacher will remind the students that while writing a learning reflection,they need to go back to the original text to get some ideas.Ask the students,if you are the writer,what will you reflect on This is to encourage them to read the following text with a question in mind.
Learning prediction:Students have learnt the text and drawn a mind map for Lesson 3,so it will be easy for them to reflect on the content and get ready for the reading of the learning reflection
The purpose of the design: Using one of the students' mind maps to review the content of the text can not only assess their homework but also start a new class with a better participation of the students.

Activity 3 Reading for structure
What does each paragraph talk about.Mark the paragraphs first individually and then in class.

Then we'll go on to make the main ideas shorter to be more clear.We'll get:

Learning prediction: There are three paragraphs in the text and the structure of the text is very clear.Ask the students to read the text quickly and find out what is talked about in the text by matching the main idea with each of the paragraph.Then they will know while reflecting on something,they need to learn and think about what they did in the past,feel the differences and form an new idea about the knowledge.Then they will make plans about what they'll do next to make some changes.
The purpose of the design: While reading,it is important for the students to master the structure of a passage,which will help them understand the passage as a whole.After doing this task,the students will be clear that the structure of a learning reflection should include Past knowledge,Present understanding and Future plan.That is,they need to think about their old knowledge,compare it with the new knowledge and then make some changes in the future.
Activity 4 Reading for content
1.Read Paragraph l individually and then complete the table in class.

The purpose of the design: The exercise will help the students to find that to start a learning reflection,one needs to make it clear about who did what and what the influence is.And then form an idea and use some adjectives and verbs to show their idea clearly.
Learning prediction:While finishing the task,the students will find the text is written in the first person,which is very natural,because the writer is talking about his own reflection after learning the text.From the sentences,the students should be able to find the key words:has
helped and interesting.In this way,it will be easy for them to find the writer's opinion about the learning.That is to say,in the first paragraph,the writer should use very few words to show what he learnt and how he feels about the learning.Thus it will be easy for them to get Writing Tip 1:
Short but clear beginning.
2.Read Paragraph 2 and answer the following three questions:
(1)What did I learn ---Truth (Underline the sentences)
(2)What do they mean to me ---Influence(Underline the sentences)
(3)Can you get something deeper from the learning ---A moral lesson (Discuss in pairs)
Learning prediction:From ..“Now I understand...I also learnt...It is amazing to know...”
the students will know what the writer learnt.At the same time,they should not only know the fact, but also understand the influence,especially the influence on the writer,which will decide what the writer will do next.Then they will understand something deeper:Nobody can succeed easily. They should make full use of their valuable time and opportunity.The key point here is to help the students find out both the fact and the influence in the paragraph and do some thinking on this.
The purpose of the design:After answering the three questions,the students will be able to know what I learnt,what they mean to me and what I should do.But if the writer just writes about what he learnt,it will not be so meaningful.Instead,he needs to write about the influence of the learning,which is the purpose of the learning.So it is easy to get Writing Tip 2:Write not only
the truth but also the influence.
3.Read Paragraph 3 and answer the following questions:
(1)How do you understand“Getting to know the secrets of our memory means learning not only the facts about it,but also the ways to improve it"
The purpose of the design: As the first sentence of the third paragraph,the sentence tells us what the writer is going to do to improve his memory.“Not only...but also ...”play the role of pushing the meaning of the sentence forward,which shows Progressive Relationship.Knowing the facts about our memory is not enough,we should learn to improve our memory.How can I do it The following sentences will be the answer.
(2)What will I do then
Students will be given some time to find the key verbs and their objects that show what the
writer will do.It is helpful for students to focus on the key information. ...follow the advice and strengthen my memory
..learn to do“spaced review” ... ..make plans for the work ..
The purpose of the design:Because here we are talking about what I will do,the students are asked to find out the key verbs and their objects.One student will be asked to write the answers on the blackboard,which will help the teacher find out whether the students can follow the teacher well enough.
(3)What is my attitude after the learning
Positive.Students will be able to find the answer from the last sentence in this paragraph“I’
m sure these methods will help me improve my learming”
The purpose of the design:Here,the writer shows his attitude and also the reason to write
the learning reflection.Also,it is very common for students to be asked to find the attitude of the writer while doing examination papers.So it is necessary to train them in daily lessons.Here we'll get Writing Tip 3:Positively plan to make some changes.
Activity 5 Reading for language
(1)Fill in the blanks and compare the differences What's more,also
□ Now I understand why we remember the events in childhood better than those that happened recently.I learnt that some people have amazing memories.These people can remember things better than most others.For me,its good to know that no one has a photographic memory.That is to say,most of us will have to make an effort when trying to remember things ,it is amazing to know how a person's memory changes with age....This means my memory is at its best state at the moment.I should make the best use of it.
The purpose of the design: In this learning reflection,the textbook is designed to practice students' ability to use addition linkers.So here the students are asked to compare the differences of using or not using addition linkers by reading Paragraph 2.“Now I understand...I also learnt
that ... What's more,it is amazing to to know...”While reading,it is easy for the students to find
that the meanings of the sentences go further and further.In this way,they will feel the difference of using or not using addition linkers,such as also,what's more,although now they don't know their name.
Then more work will be done between Para.1 and Para.2.The students will be guided to find the differences(Before reading the text,I didn't know...Now I understand ...)before and after reading the text.They will find the two paragraphs are related to each other.Cohesion happens between the two paragraphs and also among sentences because of some clue words.
When students are often trained to make this kind of analysis,they will be used to it,which is also helpful in doing college entrance examination paper.
(2)Fill in the blanks with the given expressions. For example,but also,especially,in addition,moreover,not only
□ Getting to know the secrets of our memory means learning the facts about it
the ways to improve it.I will follow the advice provided and try to strengthen my memory.I'll try to make connections with what I have already learnt. ,I must also learn to do“spaced review”,especially during the first day after learning.For example,this means going over what I've learnt soon after learning and before going to bed ,it is important for me to make plans for the work I need to do.
Learning prediction:
1.The students can fill in the blanks easily with the addition linkers because the meaning of the
paragraph is very clear.They can also recognize the first sentence ofthis paragraph as the topic sentence,because of the using of“not only ...but also ..”and also the content of the following sentences.
2.The students can find Para.2 and Para.3 are related to each other by looking at the last sentence in paragraph 2 and the first sentence in paragraph 3.
The purpose of the design:Exercises 6 and 7 are designed to practice using addition linkers, which is an important part of the this class.By doing the exercises,the students will find out how and why these words are used.They will also find the differences of using or not using the linkers.
While finding the relationship between two paragraphs,students will firstly know how the two paragraphs are related and also how they can do it when writing by themselves.
Then,very naturally,the teacher will ask the students how the sentences and paragraphs can be related to each other.Addition linkers will be introduced to the students.We'll strengthen their
meanings and usage by rereading the sentences in the text.And Writing Tip 4 will be got very easily:Use cohesion between sentences and paragraphs.
Activity 6 Summary of a good learning reflection

Learning prediction:Students will be given 3 minutes to work in groups and talk about the elements that a good learning reflection should have.The above activities deal with the structure, content and language of the passage,so it will not be a difficult task.Finally,the following summary will be shared in class:

The purpose of the design:After reading the learning reflection from different aspects, making a summary is quite necessary to help the students have a clear map in their mind.
IV.Post-reading
Activity 7 Writing---write an outline
After learning the structure,content and language of a learning reflection and summarizing its key elements,it is time for the students to write something by themselves.They will read the listening script (9.3)for Unit 9 Lesson 2 Language Learning Tips on Page 108 and write their learning reflection on language learning tips,using what we've learnt in this class.Since time is limited,they will just finished the outline in class,which will also be a way to find out how well they have learnt the class.Two of the students writings will be shown to the class and we'll analyze the advantages and disadvantages,following what we've analyzed before.
Learning prediction:The time in class is limited.But since the students have learned Lesson 2 in the previous class and the structure of the learning reflection we've learned is really very clear, some students will be able to go over the listening script quickly and finish writing their outline. Their work will give the others an example to show how to do it.
The purpose of the design:Students always have some problems in using the correct way to learn English.The purpose of choosing Lesson 2 is that it deals with language learning tips and the given advice is really effective.If we just do it as a listening exercise,maybe some students will not be able to catch the key points of the learning tips.When they read it and write a learning reflection,it will be quite possible for them to use the tips in their daily study.Meanwhile,writing an outline,or we say,having a good structure will show you know what you are going to write.So it is the first step and it is very important.
Activity 8 Reflection on the class
Watch a video of the song Reflection from the movie Mulan.Ask the students to understand Mulan's reflection on herself and think about their own life.
Learning prediction: After watching the video,students' opinion will be collected and a moral lesson will come out naturally:Life is just like an article or a book. You need to experience
and write every single day very carefully to have a good structure,content,and language for your life.Students will understand here living a life is compared as learning a passage,which needs to be dealt with very carefully.
The purpose of the design: We are learning reflection in this class,so we use the word reflection as the name of the activity to strengthen the meaning of the word. It so happened that the name of the song is also Reflection.And in the video,there are Mulan's reflections in water, on a shining surface and in Mulan's thought,all of which are just like a review of what a reflection is.
Assignment:
Finish your learning reflection.Try to make it well-written by firstly doing SelfCheck and
then Peer Editing.
Learning prediction: Some students will have difficulties in putting the tips(what they have learnt)and the given advice (things that they will do in the future)into the correct places,which will make the writing not well organized.So guidance will be given in the next period while checking the students writings
The purpose of the design: The Self Check and Peer Editing sheet will help the students to find out whether they are following what they've learnt in class or not,which will enable them to write a good learning reflection.
