Chloe Ricketts is only 15 years old, but she’s already signed a professional contract with the Washington Spirit soccer team. That makes her the youngest player ever to sign with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Chloe began working out with the Washington Spirit team in January. She trained with the team in Florida and Virginia. During training, Chloe impressed the team’s managers with her ability to compete with the other professional players. That led the team to offer her the contract.
Chloe started playing soccer when she was seven. She claims that at the time, she was “the worst on the team”. She says she improved through hard work, extra training, and staying late after practice.
In 2021, she played on a girls’ team, which went to the national finals of the Elite Clubs National League. She also played on a boys’ team, the 2007 Boys Ann Arbor Tigers, which won the Michigan State Cup that year. In January of 2022, Chloe signed with AFC Ann Arbor — a team that is part of USL League Two. USL League Two helps develop players for the NWSL. When she joined AFC Ann Arbor, Chloe was just 14 the youngest player ever to join the club.
But Chloe isn’t the first 15-year-old to play for the NWSL. The NWSL used to have a rule saying that no one under the age of 18 could join its teams. But in 2021, another 15-year-old, Olivia Moultrie, took the league to court. Olivia won her case, and the NWSL made special rules that allowed players younger than 18 to join. The new rules are mainly designed to protect young players, and require that the players live with a parent. They also protect young players from being traded to another team unless both the player and the parents agree.
When Chloe signed with the Washington Spirit, she was 15 years and 283 days old, beating Olivia’s record by three days.
24. What contributed to Chloe’s signing with NWSL
A. Her competitive competence. B. Her staying late after practice.
C. Her willingness to do extra training. D. Her potential to be a world-class star.
25. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. Chloe’s challenging experiences in life.
B. Chloe’s shooting up in the soccer world.
C. Chloe’s good cooperation with teammates.
D. Chloe’s personal achievements in matches.
26. What can we learn about Olivia from Paragraph 5
A. She advocated against trading players.
B. She persuaded NWSL to protect its players.
C. She challenged and broke the NWSL’s old rule.
D. She helped NWSL make rules for playing soccer.
27. What might be the most suitable title for the text
A. An American girl breaking a record in the World Cup.
B. Chloe Ricketts making efforts to reform NWSL greatly.
C. US professional women soccer getting more fresh blood.
D. The youngest player entering US professional women’s soccer league.

I was a teenager when it first happened. It was the early hours of the morning, still some hours before I had to get out of bed for school. I woke up and tried to turn over in bed, but my body wouldn’t let me — I was unable to move, from head to toe.
Although my brain was conscious, my muscles were still asleep. My bedroom felt hot and restrictive, as if the walls were closing in, and I felt wrapped and panicked. Finally, after about 15 seconds, the paralysis lifted. Later, I found a name for what had happened to me: sleep paralysis (睡眠瘫痪症). It’s a surprisingly common condition in which part of our brain wakes up while our body remains temporarily frozen.
At night our body cycles through four stages of sleep. The final stage is called rapid eye movement sleep, or REM, a unique phase of sleep when we dream. During REM, our brain paralyzes our muscles, probably to stop us physically acting out our dreams and hurting ourselves.
Although scientists aren’t still sure why the sensory part of our brain emerges from REM ahead of time, which makes us feel awake, doctors say paralysis is more likely to occur when we fail to follow our normal sleep pattern. Some sufferers also find that it happens to them more often when they are sleeping on their backs, though the explanation for this is unclear.
After that initial scary incident, it went on to become a frequent occurrence in my life, with an episode taking place every two or three nights. The more it happened, the less frightening it became for me until it eventually became little more than an inconvenience.
But sleep paralysis can be far more life-affecting. The condition would come with extremely frightening hallucinations, which are also normally the most dramatic and unforgettable episodes of their sleep paralysis. People hallucinate strange species, devils, ghosts, and even threatening aliens.
28. How did the author feel when sleep paralysis occurred
A. Weak and tired. B. Scared and trapped.
C. Dizzy and restricted. D. Angry and impatient.
29. Why does the brain probably paralyze our muscles during REM
A. To promote relaxation. B. To boost blood circulation.
C. To enhance muscle strength. D. To prevent physical injuries.
30. What does the underlined word “hallucinations” in Paragraph 7 refer to
A. Visions of something unreal. B. Scenes of terrible accidents.
C. Pictures of everyday objects. D. Memories of daily experiences.
31. Which aspect of sleep paralysis will most likely be covered in the following paragraph
A. Its health benefits. B. Its possible causes.
C. Its effective prevention. D. Its common symptoms.
D
The growing presence of space debris (碎片) in low Earth orbit (LEO)poses a significant threat to satellites and other orbiting assets. Consequently, the concern about destructive collisions (碰撞) and the potential for debris reentry to Earth’s atmosphere has intensified. Researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to address these challenges to enhance debris removal, collision prediction, and orbit management strategies.
One approach described in a paper presented at the 2nd near-Earth object (NEO) and Debris Detection Conference earlier this year, involves using a “genetic” algorithm (算法) to monitor the motion of space debris. Researchers aim to improve the capture and removal processes by focusing on slower-moving objects. Additionally, neural networks are being developed to predict and reduce collisions in LEO. These networks are trained on historical data to identify space debris Motion patterns and predict future paths, enabling effective collision-avoidance movements for active space missions and orbiting satellites.
Historical statistics and predictive modeling have shown that the risk of such collisions is significantly higher in LEO compared to medium Earth orbit (MEO). However, it is crucial to acknowledge the limitations of AI-based approaches, as they assume that future conditions are similar to present ones, potentially ignoring critical variables such as atmospheric density.
To address these limitations, constantly adding real-time information and updating is essential for improving the adaptability of AI models. By incorporating new debris detections and orbital changes, algorithms can better adapt to the ever-changing spatial environment. Balancing the use of AI with a comprehensive understanding of the uncertainties and challenges in space debris management will be vital for ensuring the long-term sustainability of LEO.
Overall, integrating AI into space debris monitoring, removal, and collision avoidance strategies holds promise for safeguarding satellite operations and maintaining the charming beauty of photos from LEO. However, it is essential to remain cautious of these technologies’ limitations and unknowns and continually improve and update them with real-world data to enhance their effectiveness.
32. What is one of the concerns regarding space debris in LEO
A. The cost of debris removal. B. The effect on space exploration.
C. The risk of disastrous collisions. D. The damage to the space environment.
33. How can neural networks help with space debris management
A. By creating predictive models. B. By employing genetic algorithms.
C. By monitoring fast-moving objects. D. By speeding up the capture process.
34. What is crucial for dealing with the limitations of AI-based approaches
A. Regularly testing its adaptability.
B. Continuously integrating live data.
C. Studying past and present space conditions.
D. Reducing uncertainties in debris management.
35. What is the author’s general attitude toward Al-based approaches
A. Resistant. B. Skeptical. C. Dismissive. D. Favorable.

My first year of high school felt awkward. The school was twice as big as my old school, and to make matters worse, my closest friends were sent to a different high school. I felt very isolated.
One Sunday afternoon not long after I had started high school, I was sitting at home at our dining room table doing homework. It was a cold and windy fall day, and we had a fire going in our fireplace. As usual, my red tabby cat (虎斑猫) was lying on top of all my papers, purring loudly and occasionally swatting at my pen for entertainment’s sake. My mother kept stoking the fire to keep the house nice and warm.
Suddenly, I smelled something strange, and then I noticed smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. The smoke began to fill the room so quickly that we could barely see. Groping our way to the front door, we all ran out into the front yard. By the time we made our way outside, the whole roof was overwhelmed in flames. I ran to the neighbors to call the fire department.
Five hours later, the fire was finally out. Our house was almost completely burned down. But then it struck me…I hadn’t seen my cat. Where was my cat Much to my horror, I realized that she was nowhere to be found.
Then all at once it hit me — all the security I had known, from my old school, my friends, my house to my cat, had all been ripped away — I broke down in tears. Regardless, I had to go. We piled into the car with just the clothes on our backs and a few of the firemen’s blankets, and made our way to my grandparents’ house to spend the night.
The next day, Monday, I went to school like a zombie (无生气的人). When I was getting ready for gym class at my locker, people asked me to hurry up. I thought it strange, but soon I saw why.

Dear James,
Thank you for trusting and inviting me to investigate us students’ preferred celebration activities I’m writing to show you the result and offer my own opinion.
According to the survey result, up to 88% of us would like to have an outing at the weekend, while around 59% fancied watching English movies, and 32% preferred sharing food and drinks. Just like the majority of the students, I highly recommend an outing at weekends, as it will build up health and nourish the mind. What’s more, to cater to most of us, we can combine watching open-air movies and eating with the outing, which will enrich our weekend and strengthen the bond.
I truly hope my survey and suggestions would be of great help. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

In the gym, there was a big table set up with all kinds of “stuff” on it. People had taken up a collection and bought me school supplies, notebooks, and all kinds of different clothes. It was like Christmas. People who had never spoken to me before were coming up to me to introduce themselves. I got all kinds of invitations to their houses. Their genuine outpouring of concern really touched me. I even made friends that day. I finally breathed a sigh of relief and thought for the first time that things were going to be okay. From that day on, I, with my new friends, often watched my house being rebuilt. I realized my life was doing the same thing.
A month later, in front of the house being rebuilt, I heard someone say, “Does this kitty belong to you ” When I turned around to see who it was, I couldn’t believe my eyes. A woman was standing there holding my cat! I leapt up and held her close to me and cried into that beautiful orange fur. She purred happily. Apparently, my cat had been so scared by the fire that she ran over a mile away. This wonderful woman took her in and worked hard to find out whose cat it was. I felt gratitude for my life, my new friends, the kindness of a stranger and the loud purr of my beloved cat. My cat was back and so was I.
