Step One: Brainstorming
Introduce International Volunteer Day to students.
International Volunteer Day, created by the UN General Assembly(联合国大会) in 1985, is held each year on December 5th. It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government authorities(政府部门) with the great hope for a better world. It aims to inform (告知)people about volunteers’
hard work to make a better world.
1.
Step One: Brainstorming
What kind of volunteer work can we students do
How can we be good volunteers
When can we do volunteer work
There’re many ways we can do to help others. For example we can plant trees, recycle plastic bottle to protect the environment. And we can also pet a dog, take care of children in need, look
after the elderly etc. to enhance community harmony.
2.
3.
4.
We’d better be optimistic, positive, hardworking, kind, helpful and considerate etc.
We can volunteer after school, at weekend, during summer/
winter vocation or whenever we are ready.
Step Four: Talk with your partner about your problem(s) using
the given sentence structures and then work out the best solution(s) to the problem(s).

As one of the leaders of a volunteer organisation, you are choosing a programme for next month’s activity. And you’re
in favour of caring for animals. You should:
You should talk about the topic for 1–2 minutes. You have one

Caring for animals How Why
Provide food and shelter for stray cats or dogs so that they are not starving or homeless. Animals are important for a healthy natural environment.
Donate money to animal protection centre and volunteer to help out at weekends. Animals (such as dogs or cats) can help people in many ways (such as guarding the house, guiding the blind, etc.)
Appeal to the relevant department to set some regulations to protect animals and their habitats. The friendly coexistence between human beings and animals is conducive to social development.

Looking after the elderly How Why
Visit the nursing home and talk more with the elderly. Communication helps elderly people’s mental health and
happiness.
Buy daily necessities for the elderly in need regularly to make sure they have enough to live. Many old people live in poverty and need social assistance.
Keep them active. It is important to keep them involved in activities with their family and friends and prevent them from being isolated and alone.

Donating items What Why
Clothing, quilts and shoes People need these basic supplies
to survive.
Electronics The income from the items sold in charity stores can be used to help others. Electronics can help people cook, find work, and study. Some electronics are
necessary for modern life.
Books and music People may need some spiritual nourishment to get through difficult times.

Step Three: Form groups of three, each member from a different former group. Each member take turns to present what your choice is, how to implement it and why you recommend it. The other two members listen and take notes. Then as a group, talk about the advantages and disadvantages.
A:
I think animal protection can be a good theme for next month’s programme. To care for animals, we can provide food and shelter for stray cats or dogs. We can also donate money to an animal protection centre and volunteer to help out at weekends. What’s more, we can also ask a relevant departments to set some regulations to protect animals and their habitats. After school, I plan to spend some time taking
care of the stray cats in our residential area.
B:
C:
I’ll feed them and play with them. I will also get happiness
from it.
Animals need to be taken good care of. But in my opinion, old people in our society need our special assistance. I’ll go to an old people’s home. I’ll talk with the elderly, and take care of them, and I’ll buy some daily necessities for those in need. Taking care of the elderly is a wonderful experience.
I agree old people need our special care. But besides the elderly, there are more people who need our help, especially those in financial difficulties. Therefore, we need to donate items to help them. Many people in our society need the
help of charities. I often donate items to charity stores.
The income from the items sold in charity stores can be used for helping the people in need. Moreover, we can donate some books and music. I plan participate in the sales service of

charity stores, and try to contact those who need help from
charities so that they can get help in time.
We all had a point. I need to be more specific why caring for animals is important. Animals are important for a healthy natural environment. Our friendly coexistence with animals helps our social development. What’s more, animals, such as dogs or cats, can help people in many ways, guarding the house, guiding the blind, searching and rescuing in natural
disasters, etc.
People will grow old, and many old people live in poverty. Besides, lonely old people are eager to be kept company by us and disabled old people also need to be taken special care of. What the elderly need most is our care and company. It is important to keep them involved in activities where possible with their family and friends and prevent them
from being isolated and alone.

I think people in trouble need these basic supplies to survive. If we donate items to a charity store, the income from the items sold in charity stores can be used to help others. As for books and music, people may need some spiritual nourishment to get through difficult times. These things can
help them live better.
I cannot agree with B more. We need to help old people in need, especially those who are lonely, and in financial need. We need to help the government to take care of them, and
let them feel the warmth of the big socialist family.
Same here. Animals also need to be taken good care of, and
they are part of our lives. What do you think, C
Yes, we need to help those in need, whether they are old people or animals. But we often need funds or supplies to help others. Therefore, donating items to charity stores is
important. We need to contribute more to serve society.

当一个爆破音后面紧跟着另一个爆破音时,前面的爆破音不发生爆破。这种现象叫做失去爆破。例如爆破音/p, b, t, d, k, g/任意两两组合出现时,前面的爆破音就需要失去爆破了。
比如might be,/t/+/b/, , /t/(失去爆破);
