     Study of the Text                         
What: The theme of the text is the fusion of cross-generational music, showcasing the interaction and understanding between different musical styles and generations through the combination of rock music and the erhu.The main characters are the narrator (a guitarist in a rock band) and his grandfather, an old man who enjoys playing the erhu and singing Beijing opera in the park with his friends.The narrator and his grandfather decide to participate together in the school’s art festival, combining their music to create a song which they perform on the stage.
Why: Through the story of the narrator and his grandfather, the discourse conveys that music serves as a medium for cross-cultural communication, connecting different people regardless of age or cultural backgrounds.The story emphasises the emotional bond between family members and how the same hobbies can strengthen this connection.It demonstrates the harmonious coexistence of different musical styles, encouraging readers to appreciate and respect cultural diversity.
How: Using a narrative structure, the text is divided into three parts: introduction, development, and climax.The introduction sets the musical backgrounds of the narrator and his grandfather.The development describes the process of their preparation for the art festival.The climax is the performance at the art festival and the audiences’ reaction.The use of the first person enhances the intimacy and authenticity of the story. The use of direct speech, such as “An idea suddenly hits me: ‘Why don’t we put our music together ’”, adds vividness to the text. Describing actions and scenes, such as “Everybody moves with our music.”, conveys emotions through actions rather than direct statements.

What is the passage about 2.Read the passage quickly and choose the best main idea of the passage. ◎Key: c Through the students’ performance in answering the questions, the teacher can understand their initial understanding of the passage.
Purpose The two steps lead into the topic and activate what students know and cultivate their ability of prediction.
2.To analyse how to use action words to show feelings. 3.To understand dif-ferent hobbies can bring the same fun to people. Step 3 Careful Reading 1.Students read Paragraphs 1—2 and fill in the blanks.(详见课件资源) 2.Students read Paragraphs 3—4, answer questions, and analyse the narrator’s emotions. (1)What’s his idea about (2)How does he feel about the idea (3)How do you know his feeling ◎Key: (1)Putting their music together and writing a song. (2)He feels excited about the idea. (3)Because he rushes into his grandpa’s room and it shows he really wants to make it come true. 3.Students read Paragraph 5 in detail, answer questions, and analyse the characters’ emotions. Purpose The steps above encourage students to appreciate and respect cultural diversity, and also to stimulate their creativity and imagination.
Homework Review the passage, and recite the sentence structures about hobbies.
