1.Learning materials
This text presents content that reflects the theme of the unit from another angle,and the type of discourse is a news report.The text describes how the Chinese women's volleyball team overcame difficulties and won various international competitions to become the true world champions through perseverance,struggle and teamwork. Through the study of this section,students can better understand the importance of team spirit,learn to introduce the success of the Chinese women'’s volleyball team, enhance the self-confidence and pride of the Chinese people,and at the same time, initially grasp the characteristics and methods of scene descriptions,and be able to use scene descriptions to introduce a sports event.
2.Student analysis
Students have a certain foundation through one year of senior high school English study.On the whole,students in this class can extract information,process information and express their opinions simply in English,but they are weak in using English to describe events coherently,to interpret meanings and to think critically. After the study of the first three lessons,students have understood the spiritual qualities needed for individual self-transcendence,but the spiritual qualities needed for the team have not yet been explored in depth.After the study of understanding ideas,students have a basic understanding of the style of the feature story and the language characteristics,but for the special writing techniques are not fully understood
3.Learning objectives
After this lesson,students will be able to:
(1)Understand the meaning and usage of the target vocabulary and phrases in thematic contexts,appreciate the pattern of vocabulary change,establish the awareness of word chunks,and practice the ability to use the target vocabulary to express their opinions in contexts.
(2)Summarize different vocabulary learning strategies and apply them;
(3)Understand the meaning of Chinese women's volleyball spirit and appreciate the
importance of teamwork and sportsmanship through group competitions.
4.Teaching focus and difficulties
(1)Give examples to prove the connotation of the spirit of Chinese women's volleyball,and summarize the women's volleyball spirit of perseverance,hard work, teamwork and so on
(2)By interpreting the spirit of the women's volleyball team,discuss the inspiration of the spirit of the women's volleyball team for their own lives.

6.Teaching procedures Step 1:Lead-in
(1)Warm-up Discussion
Discuss students' favorite sports and athletes,focusing on the emotions and vocabulary associated with winning and returning to success.Teacher divides students into boy group and girl group.Recall what students have learned last class,brainstorm
some important things of “return”.
(2)Video clip
Show a clip of the women's volleyball team regaining the championship to evoke emotions and set the context for the lesson.Students answer two questions:How are you feeling now What is the live atmosphere like
(3)Role play
Teacher plays the role of a CCTV reporter and the students play the role of the audience,inviting them to share their feelings at the time.
Type of activities:Learning and understanding activity &transfer and innovation activity (imaging and creating)
Purposes: To activate students' theme-related background knowledge and improve their vocabulary learning skills;To engage students by linking the lesson to their interests and to activate their prior knowledge of sports and related vocabulary.
Step 2:Vocabulary presentation
(1)Vocabulary focus:electric &serve &serve as
Teacher asks students to find out which word is used in the first paragraph to describe
the atmosphere and uses pictures to show phrases related to electric:electric guitar; electric kettle;electric fan.
Teacher tells students there is another meaning of electric and lets students search the
dictionary and continues to ask questions:Why is the atmosphere electric Who made the last critical point
Teacher asks the two questions to elicit the sentence containing “serve”and lets students make sentences,using“serve”and“serve as”to introduce the story of the Iron Hammer.
(3)Contextualization
Use sentences from the textbook to demonstrate the usage of these words in context. Teacher asks the students to read the sentences presented in the PPT,judge them to be correct or incorrect and give their reasons.
Type of activities:Application and practice activity&transfer and innovation activity (reasoning and arguing)
Purposes: To develop students 'ability to learn words in context and make students understand these new words and phrases based on their existing knowledge; Summarize and sublimate the spirit of women's volleyball and preparing for the next step.
Step 3:Introduce word formation and lexical chunks
(1)Word formation rules
Teacher facilitates a discussion where students attempt to summarize the rules of word formation they've observed,such as adding prefixes or suffixes.
(2)Innovative application
Students are challenged to create sentences using the derivatives in a context outside of sports,such as business or personal growth,to practice transferring the vocabulary to new situations.Encourage students to research and present other derivatives or related words from“competitive”and “perseverance”,expanding their vocabulary
through independent learning.
(3)Creative sentence translation
Introduce the concept of“lexical chunks”as a way to improve fluency and understanding of idiomatic language.Display a sentence from the PPT that includes the expressions“A strong will”,“steely determination”,and“ups and downs” . Provide a visual aid or picture to help students understand the context.Instead of direct translation,students are asked to translate the sentence into a different context, such as describing a historical event or a personal challenge,encouraging them to adapt the lexical chunks to fit the new scenario.
Type of activities: Application and practice activity&transfer and innovation activity (reasoning and arguing)
Purposes: To guide students learn about the qualities of athletes and deepen the significance of unit themes;To let students master some useful expressions for describing a sporting moment and to promote creative translation and application of these expressions.
Step 4:Think &Share
(1)Innovative storytelling
Assign a storytelling task where students must incorporate the expressions into a short narrative about overcoming adversity,promoting the innovative use of language.
Encourage students to not only use the expressions but also to explore their
metaphorical meanings and apply them in a way that adds depth to their storytelling.
(2)Peer feedback
After storytelling,have a peer feedback session where students discuss the effectiveness of the expressions used and how they could be improved or varied.
Encourage students to reflect on the feedback they receive and consider how they can apply the suggestions to improve their language use.
(3)Further thinking
Teacher summarizes the lesson and has the students read the sentence:Higher,faster, stronger.Then ask them to reflect on how this motto can be applied beyond sports,in areas such as personal development,academic achievement,or professional success.
Type of activities:Transfer and innovation activity(criticizing and evaluating, imaging and creating)
Purposes:To inspire students to think and express opinions,thus fostering their language using ability and creative thinking ability;To help students further understand the topic of the passage and help students transfer and develop their knowledge and thinking ability.
Step 5:Homework
Teacher directs students to write a passage within 150 words describing the sporting moment according to the words and expressions they have learnt and use the skill of setting a scene in“Learning to learn”in page 32 of the text book.
Type of activities:Transfer and innovation activity (imaging and creating)
Purposes:To have students write a passage according to the provided words and expressions and make full use of the language knowledge,skills and strategies in this unit.
