Have you ever heard about World Toilet Day It falls on November 19th and was set up by the United Nations in 2013 with a purpose to ask people to pay more attention to personal as
well as environmental health. However, toilets, influenced by different history and culture, are called differently around the world.
In the US, you will get where you need to go if you ask where the “bathroom” is. If you’re in a public place, such as a shopping mall, you will see people normally ask for directions to the “restroom”. People also use the word “John”. It comes from the name of a British man of the 19th century. He invented the flush toilet, a kind of toilet that people can use water to clean up.
In Britain, people often say “toilet” and “bathroom”. Sometimes you can see the words or pictures of “Ladies” and “Gentlemen” on the doors of public toilets. “Men” and “Women” are very common in Britain, too.
Australians say “loo” and the word is also quite popular in the UK. Canadians use the word “can”. New Zealanders “bog” and South Africans “want to go to the bathroom”.
In some Asian countries, like Philippines, people like to use “comfort room” or “CR”. While in China, people now use the word “toilet” more often than “WC”, which means “water closet”.
Where does the word “toilet” itself come from Well, it’s from the French “toilette”——to wash yourself.
According to the passage, why do different countries use different words for “toilet”
Because they don’t agree with each other.
Because they have different culture and history.
Because they want to show respect for the bathroom. 24.Where does the word “John” come from
A common American name.
A name of an American inventor.
A name of an Englishman who invented the flush toilet. 25.What is the passage about
World Toilet Day.
Toilets and personal health.
Different names for the toilet.
How does the writer develop the passage
By telling a story.
By giving examples.
By offering suggestions.

Ten years ago, my mother gave me her simple but beautiful old “secretary desk”. It easily fit into my tiny room and made me feel safe and confident when writing—though I often had to put file folders ( 文 件夹) and books on the floor around me due to the limited (有限的) space.
A few years after my writing journey, we moved into a bigger home and I had my own office. One day, while we were shopping at a market, my husband Bill stopped, “I want to buy this big desk for you, sweetie! It’s perfect for my writer!”
“Thanks, but I don’t need this!” I replied. “Why ” he felt surprised.
“I just feel good when writing at my little desk!” I answered.
Weeks later, while working in my new office, I looked around at so many folders, books and papers lying all over the floor but couldn’t find what I needed.
I suddenly realized the tiny desk wasn’t appropriate anymore! “Is Bill right ” I thought, “Maybe I do need a bigger desk.”
Unable to write, I pulled C. JoyBell C.’s book of poetry titled All Things Dance Like Dragon from the bookshelf, and her words about belief jumped off the page into my heart. She talked about how she had trained herself to love the feeling of not knowing where she was going, and just believing that as she opened up her wings and flew towards an unknown direction, things would work out.
“So, a bigger desk might symbolize bigger possibilities. Why not get out of my comfort zone for a wider world ” I said to myself.
What’s the biggest problem for the “secretary desk”
A. The size. B. The weight. C. The height.
What does the underlined word “appropriate” in Para. 6 mean
A. suitable B. crowded C. convenient
What does the writer mainly learn from the poetry
Never give up learning.
Belief can create a better and more beautiful life for us.
Step out of the familiar and relaxing situation and try new things bravely.
What could be the best title for this passage
My Writing Journey
On the Wings of Change
Learning is a Lifelong Journey
