Paper enabled the creation of lightweight books and it was a better way of keeping records.
Moveable type printing made the books printed faster.
Compass was used for hamonizing( people’s lives and environments.
Weapons such as the fire arrow can be made using the gunpowder.

Among all the modern inventions, I think four inventions have changed people’s lives a lot.

Alex: Hi, Carol. Wow, what are those
Carol: Hello, Alex. Oh, these are some of the interesting inventions
that I’m writing about for my English homework.
Alex: I see…What’s that, then
Carol: They’re shoes with lights. You use them for seeing in the
dark when you get up at night.
Alex: Oh, that’s a cool idea! I always hit my toe on something on
the way to the bathroom at night.
Carol: Next is a special ice-cream scoop. This is my favorite invention.
It runs on electricity and becomes hot.

Alex: I know what it’s for! It’s used for serving really cold ice-cream.
Carol: Yes, that’s right! The last invention I’m going to write about
is shoes with special heels. You can move the heels up and
down.
Alex: What are they used for
Carol: Well, you can change the style of your shoes. You can raise the
heels if you are going to a party or lower them if you are just
going out for shopping.

Paul: The zipper Is it really such a great invention
Roy: Think about how often it’s used in our daily lives. You can see
zippers on dresses, trousers, shoes, bags ... almost everywhere!
Paul: Well, you do seem to have a point ...
Roy: Of course! I thought about it because I saw a websites last week.
The pioneers of different inventions were listed there. For
example, it mentioned that the zipper was invented by
Whitcomb Judson in 1893. But at that time, it wasn’t used
widely.
Paul: Really So when did it become popular
Roy: Around 1917.

Wood can be used for building (= to build) houses.
木材可以被用来建造房屋。

e.g. The building was used as a hotel twenty years ago.

(1)you do seem to have a point ... 是个强调句,此处是“助动词do + 谓语动词原形”的结构。
e.g. He did come here yesterday. 他昨天的确来这儿了。
Do come to my birthday party. 一定要来我的生日聚会。
(2)have a point 有道理
e.g. Both sides have a point.
双方都有道理。
④ For example, it mentioned that the zipper was invented
by Whitcomb Judson in 1893. (教材P42)
(1) mention表示“提到;提及”,是及物动词,其后接名词或
代词作宾语时,无需用任何介词;另外注意不接双宾语。如:
e.g. I would prefer that you did not mention my name.
我希望你不要说出我的名字。
He never mentioned his new friend to me.
他从未向我提及他的新朋友。
(2) 若后接动词,要用动名词,不能用不定式。
e.g. Come to think of it, he did mention seeing you.
想起来了,他确实提到看见过你。
(3) not to mention意为“更不用说;还不算”。
e.g. He can speak French, German and Japanese, not to mention
English.
他会说法语、德语和日语,更不用说英语。
(4)口语中说Don’ t mention it. 主要用来回答感谢,有时也用来回答道歉。如:
e.g. A: Thank you very much. 非常感谢。
B: Don’ t mention it. 不客气。
A: I’ m sorry to have troubled you. 不好意思打扰你了。
B: Don’ t mention it. 没关系。
