Each group selects a country to introduce its New Year.
Group Work
I’d like to introduce the Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival to you. It holds great importance in China. People sweep out dust from their houses, hang couplets, set
off fireworks, and enjoy lion or dragon dances. Setting of firecrackers is the most typical Spring Festival custom, and people believe that the sound of firecrackers can drive away
evil spirits.
During the Spring Festival, relatives and friends will give New Year’s greetings to each other. Children get lucky money from their elders. Lucky money means the blessings of the elders to the younger generation. This is my favorite custom.
Another very important custom is that people will all try to return home and enjoy the family dinner on the eve of the Spring Festival. Grandparents, parents, and children gather to eat delicious food and express best wishes for the whole family. This reunion shows that family is hugely important in Chinese culture.
I like celebrating New Year because it is a special time to connect with my family and friends and show hope for the coming year.
