As a kid, Joanna Buckley wasn’t interested in science — until she had a chance to try it. That happened when
she got a chemistry set for Christmas.
“Over the course of a few weeks, I’d completed every experiment. But in the process, I polluted my parent’s
dining room carpet and burnt the kitchen worktop with the spirit burner,” she says.
Now science is Buckley’s job. She works in the chemistry department at the University of Sheffield in
England. “I realize, first- hand, how important it is to have something or someone to show you why science is so
great,” she says. Now the good news is that citizen science appears.
Citizen science takes the fun of experimenting a step further than Buckley’s at- home chemistry kit. That’s
because these experiments are real, looking for novel answers.
“Compared with a one- off experiment, what’s cool about citizen science is that students get that this has a
purpose,” says Prunuske, who teaches microbiology and immunology at a medical college. “Students want to do a
good job, because they know scientists are going to use the new data in their own research.”
Jennifer Long’s job is to coordinate (协调) education and outreach. She agrees with Prunuske. “Kids like that
it’s real. And they like that it’s important and that it matters.” Citizen- science projects have made big discoveries.
One found a previously unknown galaxy cluster (星系团). Another project helped assess how much damage a big
earthquake had caused in Japan. And one of the first citizen- science projects helped scientists learn where Monarch
butterflies go every winter.
Some adults worry about teens losing interest in science. That’s one reason they hope that fun, exciting
citizen- science projects can help them keep engaged, Long says. And she has some evidence that it’s working—
“Last year, we did have a couple of students say, ‘I really think I want to be a scientist now.’”
24. What is the purpose of paragraph 2
A. To praise Buckley for her strong will.
B. To state Buckley has a talent for science.
C. To prove failure is the mother of success in science.
D. To support experiments can make teens interested in science.
25. Why is citizen science more fun
A. It needs to seek for new solutions. B. It carries out experiments frequently.
C. It must carry out experiments in groups. D. It demands to handle difficult problems.
26. What can we know from what Prunuske said
A. She participated in the experiment. B. She took pride in what students took up.
C. Citizen science is popular with students. D. Scientists are willing to employ students.
27. What is Long’s attitude towards citizen science
A. Concerned. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

In 1977, Irene Pepperberg, a Harvard graduate, decided to investigate the thought processes of another
creature by talking to it. To do this, she would teach a one- year- old African gray parrot, Alex, to reproduce the
sounds of the English language.
Pepperberg bought Alex in a pet store, where she let the store’s assistant choose him because she didn’t want
other scientists to say that she had intentionally chosen an especially smart bird. Given that Alex’s brain was just
the size of a walnut, most researchers thought Pcpperberg’s communication study would go nowhere.
But with Pepperberg’s patient teaching, Alex learned how to follow almost 100 English words. He could count
to six and had learned the sound for seven and eight. But the point was not to see if Alex could learn words by heart.
Pepperberg wanted to get inside his mind and learn more about a bird’s understanding of the world.
In one demonstration, Pepperberg held up a green key and a green cup for him to look at. “What’s the same ”
she asked. “Color,” Alex responded without hesitation. “What’s different ” Pepperberg asked. “Shape,” Alex
quickly replied. His voice had the sound of a cartoon character. But the words — and what can only be called the
thoughts — were entirely his. Many of Alex’s skills, such as his ability to understand the concepts of “same”
and“ different”, are rare in the animal world. Living in a complex society, parrots like Alex must keep track of
changing relationships and environments.
During the demonstration, as if to offer final proof of the mind inside his bird’s brain, Alex spoke up. “Talk
clearly!” he commanded, when one of the younger birds Pepperberg was also teaching mispronounced the word
“green”.
Alex knew all the answers himself and was getting bored. “He’s moody,” said Pepperberg, “so he interrupts
the others, or he gives the wrong answer just to be difficult.” Pepperberg was certainly learning more about the
mind of a parrot, but like the parent of a troublesome teenager, she was learning the hard way.
28. Why did Pepperberg let the shop assistant choose the bird
A. A bird with a small brain was needed.
B. She wanted a very smart bird for her study.
C. A research subject should be randomly chosen.
D. The shop assistant was better at choosing birds.
29. What might be most researchers’ expectation of Pepperberg’s study at first
A. Effective. B. Practical. C. Costly. D. Fruitless.
30. Which of the following aspects of Alex’s ability did Pepperber’s study focus on
A. Recognizing voices. B. Creating English words.
C. Understanding concepts. D. Communicating with people.
31. What caused Pepperberg’s struggle in her study
A. Her instructions had to be easy for Alex.
B. Alex was sometimes too clever to control.
C. Alex would point out other birds’ mistakes.
D. She had trouble understanding Alex’s mood.
D
Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests.
A study has found that people who let their minds wander easily have more “working memory”, giving them
the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and control it cleverly.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks, such as following teachers’
instructions or remembering dictated sentences. During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one simple task
during which researchers kept asking if their minds were wandering. In the end, volunteers measured their working
memory capacity (容量) by their ability to remember a series of letters mixed with simple maths questions.
Daniel Levinson, a professor at the University of Wisconsin- Madison in the United States, said that those with
higher working memory capacity reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance
did not deteriorate.
The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, appear to make sure that the former
research found working memory allows humans to deal with many thoughts at the same time.
Dr Jonathan Smallwood, of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science in Leipzig,
Germany, said, “What this study seems to suggest is that, when the tasks aren’t very difficult, people with
additional working memory capacity use them effectively to think about other things besides what they’re doing.”
Working memory capacity is also connected with general measures of intelligence, such as reading
comprehension and IQ scores. Dr Smallwood added,“ Our results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite
often in daily life - when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower- are
probably supported by working memory.”
32. What did the researchers ask the volunteers to do during the study
A. solve some difficult maths problems B. retell some dictated sentences
C. follow the teacher’s instructions D. carry o ü t one simple task
33. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in the fourth paragraph probably mean
A. become worse B. get better C. improve quickly D. drop gradually
34. According to the study, working memory _______.
A. prevents people from remembering dictated sentences
B. causes people’s minds to wander more easily
C. allows people to consider more things at the same time
D. leads to people’s worse performance during work
35. What’s the text mainly about
A. How the working memory works in the daily life.
B. Wandering minds might have brighter brains.
C. Why people’s minds wander while working.
D. Working ability can be improved by wandering minds.

Once considered an optional lifestyle choice, recycling has become a commonplace activity in most areas. One
type of recycling called downcycling, involves re- purposing a material into a new product of lesser quality. 36
Downcycling is most common in terms of industrial materials. These products lose their value as they are
recycled, which limits their capacity for new use. 37 White writing paper, for example, is often
downcycled into cardboard; once downcycled to this new form, it can no longer be used as white paper again.
Another example of downcycling includes the use of plastic components.
38 Plastic, glass, and aluminium products coded with the number one may be remade into something
of equal or greater value. This type of recycling is known as upcycling, and represents the forward compatibility
(并存,相容) of recycled components. Materials available for downcycling, such as water, juice, and milk bottles,
are coded with the number two. They may not be used to contain food- grade items again upon being downcycled.
Items available for downcycling often require additional chemicals energy, and other treatments in order to
change them into something usable. 39 Trash bins, tables, and chairs are also considered materials with a
high energy cost to recycle.
40 This usually happens when a substance is blended (混合,交融) with other substances, such as
different types of plastic with various recycling codes. Since these products can no longer be made into new ones,
they will either have to be reused or discarded, typically in a landfill.
A. These recycled materials may often be put into new use.
B. When a product reaches a code seven, it is considered no longer recyclable.
C. It can include varying grades of plastic, paper products, and other materials.
D. Long- lasting plastic products in particular require much additional treatment.
E. Their recycled form is typically both weaker and cheaper than their original one.
F. Giving products a new life is considered a good way tore use materials and avoid waste.
G. Products are provided with codes to determine their grades and whether or not they may be recycled.

For his first five birthdays, we 41 the party at home, repeating the same formula (方案): close family and

But then, he got 43 enough to have a choice about the guest list and place. So for his 44
birthday, we booked the local trampoline park (蹦床乐园). This worked out well, because the kids got 45

An international team of astronomers used a database combining observations from the best telescopes in the
world 56 (detect) the signal from the active supermassive black holes of dying galaxies (星系) in the early
universe. The 57 (appear) of these active supermassive black holes is related to changes in the host galaxy.
This means a black hole could have far reaching effects 58 the evolution of its host galaxy.
The Milky Way Galaxy 59 we live includes stars of various ages, including stars still forming. But in
some other galaxies, 60 (know) as elliptical (椭圆的) galaxies, all of the stars are old and about the same
age. This indicates that early in 61 (they) histories elliptical galaxies had a period of rich star formation
that suddenly ended. Why this star formation stopped in some galaxies 62 not others is not well understood.
One possibility is that a supermassive black hole disrupts (瓦解) the gas in some galaxies, 63 (create) an
environment unsuitable for star formation.
To test this theory, astronomers look at distant galaxies. Due to the limited speed of light, it takes time for light
to travel across space. The light we saw last night from an object 10 billion light years away 64 (travel) for
10 billion years to reach Earth. Thus the light we see today shows us what the galaxy looked like when the light left
that galaxy 10 billion years ago. So looking at distant galaxies is like looking back in time. But the longer distance
also means that distant galaxies look 65 (small), making study more difficult.

应用文写作
Dear Roy,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re finding it hard to make friends in China. I understand quite well that you are
anxious and feel terrible. It can be tough being in a new place, but take it easy. Here are my suggestions.
Firstly, it’s quite important to overcome your shyness. Try to be brave and open yourself up to others. Always
wearing a smile when meeting people will be of great help. Besides, I recommend joining in more activities, where
you may meet people who like being with you. Last but not least, don’t try to fit in with everyone, and find people
who share common interests with you. I believe with your sincerity and friendliness you will make some friends.
Looking forward to hearing some stories about your new friends.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: Hello, Li Ming. You look worried — what’s the problem
M: I have a new friend from America. Tomorrow is her birthday. I don’t know what I should buy for her.
W: Well, a small, inexpensive item would be okay. You can get some candy, toys or comic books.
M: Such a small gift
W: Yes. The American idea of a gift is to bring a nice token that says “I have thought of you”, not a gift that means
“how much money I have spent”.
M: I see. Can I get some Chinese food for her
W: That would be okay. You can take some cakes for her. If you can make some by yourself, it would be even
better.

W: Well, she is thinking of doing some household cleaning or baby- sitting in the community.
M: That’s not bad. It could be a short- term alternative. Your mum can look for another job when the market
improves. Things will work out eventually.
W: I just hope she won’t feel depressed.
M: How about searching for information on jobs on the Internet
W: That’s a good idea, thank you.

My friend Charlie was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1970. He grew up in Toronto. His father is a doctor, and his
mother works in a company. He is single at the moment, but he’s going to get married next year. His girlfriend’s
name is Kate Thomas.
He went to a primary school in Toronto and his favorite subjects were English and History. After that he went
to the University of Toronto to learn accounting. After graduation, he came to China and studied Chinese at Peking
University for three years. Now he is working in a Canadian company in Beijing.
I met Charlie at Peking University when I was also studying there. I like to play tennis and chess in my spare
time, while he is obsessed with computer games. But we both loved traveling. We became good friends. On
weekends, I would show him around the city if we were free. We visited the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace,
the Grand Bell Temple, the Great Wall and many other interesting places. He really likes Beijing. That’s why he
decided to stay here to work after graduation.
