B
A year ago, my wife and I sold one of our cars and replaced it with an e-bike. I knew that I was doing something
good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved (保留 ) for the committed and
adventurous people, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. I live in Colorado; e-biking
would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not
going to be fun.
I was very wrong. Before selling our car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly
learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes I wear gloves, warm socks, and a ski jacket
when I ride, and am almost never too cold.
And though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the
e-bike solved my problem. Even when it was 90 degrees outside, I didn’t break a sweat, thanks to my bike’s.
pedal-assist mode (脚踏辅助模式) . If I’m honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode,
sat back, and enjoyed my ride.
But biking to work wasn’t just pleasant—it was totally enjoyable. One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped
on (跳上) my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt
more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by
metal and glass. I have to say, this sensation made me happier and healthier.
Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of
suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s uarealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way
that the Model T (福特旗下汽车) replaced horses. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would likely
save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and happiness.
56. What did the author initially think of letting go of his car
A. A healthy move. B. A forced decision.
C. A call of duty. D. A difficult choice.

A. Panicked. B. Amazed. C. Embarrassed. D. Confused.
58. What does the author say about the e-bike
A. It makes commuting (通勤上下班) in hot weather more enjoyable and less sweaty.
B. It is impractical for daily commuting (通勤上下班) in the cold winter months.
C. Its pedal-assist mode helps the author exercise while commuting.
D. It can keep the author warm when riding it in cold weather.
59. What does the underlined part “this sensation” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Desire to head home faster. B. Interest in exploring new routes.
C. Love for exposure to nature. D. Relief from work stress.
60. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The Model T will be back quickly.
B. E-bikes will replace cars very soon.
C. Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
D. E-bike asks for friendly transport network.
C
You may wonder, why should spiders be our friends Because they destroy so many insects, including some of
the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it impossible for us to live in the world; they would
devour (吞食) all our crops and kill our cattle, if it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals. We
owe a lot to the birds and beasts who eat insects, but all of them put together kill only a very small amount of the
number destroyed by spiders. Moreover, unlike some of the insect eaters, spiders never do the least harm to us or our
belongings.
Spiders are not insects, as many people think, nor even nearly related to them. One can tell the difference almost
at a glance, for a spider always has eight legs and an insect never more than six.
How many spiders are engaged in the work on our behalf One authority on spiders made a research on spiders
and found that there were more than 2,250.000 in one acre; that is something like 6,000,000 spiders of different kinds
on a football field. Spiders are busy for at least half the year in killing insects. It is impossible to make more than the
wildest guess at how many they kill, but they are hungry creatures, not content with only three meals a day. It has
been estimated that the weight of all the insects destroyed by the spiders in Britain in one year would be greater than
the total weight of all human beings in the country.
61. Spiders should be our friends, because ________.
A. they only eat harmful insects
B. they are great insect-eating animals
C. they destroy insects without hurting us in any way
D. they include some of the greatest enemies of the human race
62. One authority on spiders estimated ________.
A. that there were more than 2,250,000 insects in a grass field in the south of England
B. that every football field in England had 6,000,000 spiders of different kinds
C. the number of different spiders in England was very big
D. that the weight of all the insects destroyed by the spiders is more than the weight of human
63. What does the underlined word “content” mean in the article It means ________.
A. fed B. discouraged C. disappointed D. satisfied
64. Spiders are active in killing insects ________.
A. all the year B for most of the year.
C. in the summer month. D. for more than six months of each year.
65. Which one of the following statements is the main idea
A. Spiders, the greatest insects-eating animals, protect us from being destroyed by harmful insects and they should be
our friends.
B. Spiders are not insects but in fact animals.
C. There are great numbers of spiders engaged in destroying harmful insects on behalf of the human race.
D. Birds and beasts can’t compare with spiders as destroyers of insects.
D
Science is increasingly central to our lives—from its role in creating day-to-day objects such as the smartphones
in our pockets, to the big challenges of tackling disease and focusing on biodiversity loss.
Many of the changes are hugely beneficial but they often come with potential downsides that demand public
debate. Will artificial intelligence take people’s jobs or destroy elections with false news How fast can we practically
achieve a net zero economy (零工经济——共享经济的一种形式)
For the crucial public debate that is needed on all this to take place, we must have a scientifically literate
population. But there is a divide between the scientifically minded and those who choose not to engage with science.
It saddens me that our culture now views science as difficult, which discourages many people from taking an
interest in it. A British Science Association (BSA) survey recently suggested that only around a third of
14-to-18-year-olds find scientists inspirational or consider the subject to be relevant to their lives.
In fact, science is interlinked with every aspect of our existence and people from all walks of life and of all ages
should be able to access it easily. The invention of the printing press was crucial to the Enlightenment (启蒙运动)
because it democratised (普及) knowledge. So, in this increasingly science-centered world, the same attention should
be given to popular science writing as is given to other forms of literature.
The Royal Society Science Book Prize is the only one in the world to promote popular science writing. Stephen
Hawking’s A Brief History of Time, which was shortlisted (把……列入入围名单) for the prize in 1989, was written
for readers who had no prior knowledge of physics and has since become a universally recognised text on the
universe.
Democratising science has never been more important. There are so many scientific stories to be told that can
help us better understand ourselves. A society equipped with a solid understanding of the issues of the day is a society
more able to respond to them in a better way.
66. What does the underlined part “all this” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Beneficial scientific advancements.
B. Challenges facing human beings.
C. Potential downsides of science.
D. Disagreements between scientists and the public.
67. What does the BSA survey reveal about the majority of British young people
A. They have great respect for scientists.
B. They feel disconnected from science.
C. They know little about the Enlightenment.
D. They wish to land a career in the scientific field.
68. What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A. Literature should become a required subject.
B. The printing press needs to be innovated.
C. Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common.
D. More attention should be attached to popular science writing.
69. Why has A Brief History of Time been well-received according to the author
A. It won an international book prize.
B. It focused on important life issues.
C. It was written by a highly-honoured author.
D. It democratised knowledge about the universe.
70. What is the best title for the text
A. The crisis of science in our modern life.
B. We must rely on science to tackle our problems.
C. Popular science books have never been more important.
D. Public debate about science could never be more necessary.
第Ⅱ卷(满分35)
第四部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Recently, I successfully defended my dissertation (论文), and my advisor praised my work ethic (职业道德). I
thought about that comment and wondered just where that work ethic was established. I believe it was formed in my
dad’s tire (轮胎) shop.
Dad purchased his tire business when I was in high school. I began working for Dad. Although I had little
experience with things connected with motor vehicles, I determined to learn and work hard. Dad’s early employees
were willing to take time to teach me about their trade (手艺). Most days, they were even patient with me.
The work was dirty and physically tiring, but I wanted to aid Dad. My main motivation was to have customers
think well of him because of my work ethic. When I was in the shop I was busily engaged. I did not sit around
chatting with others, I stayed late and worked at being cheerful and respectful. Anything that helped the business was
ultimately helping my dad.
After a day at the tire shop, I was often extremely tired, covered in dirt, but strangely satisfied. Of course, some
days were more difficult than others, but the confidence that I had given my all and that my work was meaningful
made the pain and effort worthwhile.
Later, Dad retired, and sold the business to my brother, who has expanded it and continues to run it ably.
Whenever I return and visit the tire shop, I reminisce about the many cars and trucks I serviced, and the thousands of
wheels I fixed. More importantly, I also remember the great feeling of satisfaction that accompanies honest labor.
71. How did the employees in the tire shop treat the author (no more than 8words)
72. What motivated the author to help his father in the shop (no more than10 words)
73. How did the author feel after a day at the tire shop (no more than 5words)
74. What does the underlined phrase “reminisce about” in the last paragraph mean (1 word)
75. What can you learn from the author’s story Put it in your own words. (no more than 25 words)
