Learning objectives
1. Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the question.
1) What are the subjects in sentences (a) and (b)
"Knowing where the ball would go" is the subject in sentence (a);
"Shooting with great accuracy" is the subject in sentence (b).

2) What does "it" refer to in sentences (c) and (d)
3) Why does the author choose to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage
In sentence (c) "it" refers to "knew where the ball would go";
In sentence (d) "it" refers to "shot with great accuracy".
Considering the genre of the reading passage a news report, it requires more concise and formal language. So the author chooses to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage, which are suitable for a news report.
Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.

2. Rewrite the underlined sentences with the -ing form as subject.
1.Getting tangled up with some other competitors made her fall.
2.But trying to pull the shoe back on cost her precious time.
3.Throwing the shoe away meant she could get up quickly and fight for her position in the race.
4.Running the rest of the race with just one shoe on and her right foot bare raised a big cheer for her. Losing a shoe didn't keep her from taking part.

动名词作主语
动名词的语法作用相当于名词，在句中主要作主语、宾语、表语和定语等。动名词作主语往往表示一种概念、习惯或经验。单个的动名词（短语）作主语时，谓语动用单数。由and连接两个动名词(短语)时，谓语动词用复数；若主语指向同一个内容，则谓语动词仍然用单数。

重要提示：
(1) 动名词作主语，有时可以用it作形式主语，然后把动名词后置，常见于"It's no use/no good/fun/pleasure…"和"It's useful/useless/nice
/worthwhile..."等式中。
It is no use crying over spilt milk.覆水难收。
It's nice talking with you. 与你交谈感觉真好。
It's really tiring working late like this. 工作到这么晚真累人
It is a waste of time talking about such a thing.
谈论这种事情是浪费时间。

注意：
①第一种情况是，表语为“no+名词”时，一般用动名词作主语，不用不定式。在第二种情况下，用动名词或不定式均可。
②在“主系表”结构中，动名词作主语说明表语的具体内容。作表语的名词往往表示人的兴趣、爱好、习惯、工作、职业等。
