I.Background Information
Teaching Content Unit 2 Let's celebrate! Understanding ideas:The Real Father Christmas Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (2019) High School English Book Two(Compulsory)
Design Principles According to General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards (2017),the goal of English teaching was shifted to cultivate core competencies,which comprise language ability,learning ability,thinking capacity and cultural awareness.As the bridge linking curriculum content and curriculum goal,activity-based learning requires teachers to design a series of linear-advanced teaching activities,which aims to culminate in students’development of English subject core competencies.Guided by the idea,the teaching procedures in this lesson are designed,which cover different layers,namely learning and comprehension, practice and application,transfer and innovation. The thematic context of this unit is human being and society,with two clues.One is to appreciate the book Letters From Father Christmas,the other is to understand the spirit of Christmas:giving and loving.In this passage, under the guidance of the structure of book review and question chains,students can extract and construct factual information about Letters From Father Christmas,which integrates the learning of language,thinking and culture As well as the understanding of the factual information, the teacher should also consciously raise students’ awareness of understanding the true meaning of Christmas festivals—to feel love and express love for others.
Learner Profiles As the first graders in senior high school,they have already attained a certain level of language competence, accumulating some basic words and sentence patterns. Besides,they show great interest and passion in learning English so that they are actively engaged in classes. Before unit 2,they have been already exposed to the basic information of book review,but they may find difficult to recall details of it.Another point is that some students may have no idea of the book Letters From Father Christmas,which requires the teacher to introduce some information about the author to let students have a better understanding.
Content Analysis [What] The teaching material is the“understanding ideas” part of Unit 2 Let's celebrate!The thematic context centers around the relationship between human beings and society.It mainly introduces a book review of Letters From Father Christmas.Five paragraphs are included. This passage introduces the introduction,summary and comments on the book Letters From Father Christmas. [Why] This passage aims to cultivate students’sense of appreciation of excellent books through introducing the Letter From Father Christmas.Meanwhile,an analysis of the meaning of gifts and festivals tends to raise students’ awareness of feeling love and expressing love for others. [How] This passage is a book review,which can be divided into 3 parts:Introduction,Summary and Comments.The language is simple,using simple present tense and simple past tense.Additionally,there are many attributive clauses embedded in the passage,which might make the reading comprehension more challenging.
Teaching Objectives By the end of the class,students will be able to: 1.acquire the factual information about the book Letters From Father Christmas,including its author, writing background,character,etc; 2.figure out the basic structure of book review. 3.understand what“real Father Christmas”means and the spirit of festivals. 4.appreciate love from others and express their love for others.
Key Point Students can explore why Tolkien may indeed have been the real Father Christmas through analyzing the passage under the guidance of the teacher.
Difficult Point It may be difficult for students to understand true meaning of real Father Christmas,therefore,teacher should help students find out what makes Tolkien like a real Father Christmas.

Pre-reading (8min)
Step 1 (4min) 1.Begin class with the topic of Christmas and ask students the question: Does Father Christmas realy exist Then lead to the title“The Real Father Christmas”. 2.Introduce the author of the book and his famous works There is a difference between students’opinions and the title,which can attract students’interests in the passage. Familiar with the author, students can understand the passage better.
Step 2 (4min) 3.Ask students to look at the title and the picture,and pose the question: What information can you get from this illustration 4.Guide students to review the structure of book review. Students can find out the structure of the passage— book review. Review can activate students’prior knowledge about book review.
While-reading (25min)
Step 3 Activity One 1.Students read the passage quickly for the first time and finish the matching Reading for structure contributes to the development of students’ discourse awareness. Through question chains, students can find out details in introduction part,namely, title, author, writing background and target readers.Understanding the “magic”pave the way for understanding “real”Father Christmas. Pictures as visual aids help students feel the letters more intuitively. Handwritten letter makes the letter more real so that children believe that Father Christmas seems really exist.

Activity Two 2.Read the introduction part and elicit the title and author of the book,and ask questions: Why Letters From Father Christmas could be the perfect book What does“magic”mean Who enjoy the book most Why did Tolkien write this book Activity Three 3.Elicit students to the letters and provide two pictures. 4.Elicit students to the content of the letters.Focus on the first sentence of
para.4 and it is a conclusion.Then ask students about the following content: details.And pose a question: How many parts can the details be divided into Then analyze the passage and find out the character,plot and feature of the book. 5.After students are clear about the content of the letters,ask them a question: How do you think of the content of the letters Generalizing the passage content can develop students’logical thinking ability.“No warning”makes letters more real. Using adjectives to describe the content of the letters, students can have a better understanding of the letter and feel the“change”better. By answering the question, students can feel the true spirit of giving at Christmas time.
