Triathlon is a race in which each person swims, rides a bicycle and runs over very long distances. It has been held ten times in Hope Town. Sam, aged 20, finished nine races with his younger brother Luke. Every race was a victory for them. Luke can’t walk, talk or feed himself because of a rare brain illness since birth. Wang Yaping has a job that allows her to travel—all the way to space. Wang is an astronaut (宇航员). In 2013, she became the second Chinese woman to travel to space. She is also famous for a physics class that she televised from space to more than 60 million people.
Wang trained very hard for many years to become an astronaut. The hardest part was desert (沙漠) training. Wearing a spacesuit and carrying heavy equipment, she walked several kilometers through the hot and sandy desert. “Sometimes it was so windy and dusty,” she says, “that we couldn’t see each other even though we were just a few meters away.”
Wang loves her job. She remembers watching the first Chinese astronaut go into space. “I was so proud and also very excited. But as I watched it, it came to my mind: we have male pilots (飞行员) and female pilots. And then a male astronaut. When will there be a female astronaut And today, it’s me becoming one of the first few.”
Zoltan Takacs is a snake researcher. He first became interested in snake when he was a teacher in Budapest, Hungary. Today, snakes are his career. He travels to many different countries around the world to study all kinds of dangerous snakes.
Takacs studies snake venom—the poison (毒物) a snake produces to kill other animals. He hopes his research will help him discover new life-saving medicines. There are over 100,000 types of venomous animals in the world. “Imagine how many possible medicines you could find,” he says.
Being a snake researcher allows Takacs to travel to many beautiful and far away places. But it is also dangerous. He has been bitten by venom snakes six times, but has learned to be careful. “Explorers (探险者) have to know their limits,” he says. “Then we can push those limits further.”

In 221 BC, Emperor Qinshihuang took over the other six states and set up the first unified kingdom in Chinese history. In order to strengthen his newly born authority and protect the north from the Huns (匈奴人), he ordered to build walls. The Northern Wei, Northern Qi and Norhern Zhou Dynasties all built their own sections but on a smaller scale than the walls in the Han Dynasties. The powerful Tang Dynasty saw peace between the northern tribes and central China for a long time, so few Great Wall sections were built in the period.
The Ming Dynasty is the peak of wall building in Chinese history. The Ming suffered a lot by troubles from minority tribes. The Ming court, from its first emperor to the last, endlessly built walls in the north. Besides adding many more miles of its own, the Ming emperors ordered enlargement of the walls of previous dynasties into double-line or multi-line walls. For example, out of Yanmenguan Pass were added three big stone walls and 23 small stone walls. The countless walls and watchtowers made the country much safer than before. In the early Qing Dynasty, some sections of the walls were repaired and several sections were extended. This great engineering work stopped in the middle of the Qing Dynasty.
